to think delivery people should wait longer than 15 seconds

Just had an Amazon delivery man come to the door, from the time he knocked, to the time he had driven off with the parcel was 15 seconds!

Often they will throw it in the garden or give it to next door and never once has it taken me more than 25-30 seconds to get to the door - even if I’m upstairs (usually less than 10 seconds). I have a disability which makes running at break neck speeds a bit difficult but still today I was at the door (which included time for finding the keys and putting my boob away) and he was already in his car backing out of the drive.

I make sure to get things delivered on days I know I’ll be home because I don’t want their receipt to be delayed, nor do I want them going to my awful NDN.
I get that delivery drivers have a lot of demands on their time but I make sure I’m there to receive my items, why behave like that?

Passthebubbly · 16/02/2020 13:29

Just had Hermes at mine seen them drive up had just chucked it at side of house didn’t even ring doorbell she got a shock when I opened the door Smile

I don't think it's the drivers - they are all time tracked so it's the companies setting the mad constraints.

They often don't give me time to get down all the stairs at mine - and I'm talking running.

EuroMillionsWinner · 16/02/2020 13:49

They have less than 15 seconds?

Often, yes. They have a nearly impossible target to meet or get sacked.

WorraLiberty · 16/02/2020 13:49

You got up from where you were sitting, got the keys to the door, unlocked it and put your boob away within 15 seconds?

Lojoh · 16/02/2020 13:50

Also if they are early do them a solid and give them the sticker off the top so they can go an have a ciggy and a brew and scan the parcel after. It's a thankless job!

Personally I don't mind if they ring the bell to get my attention but then leave the parcel on the doorstep. I am there almost immediately so it really doesn't matter if they don't wait for me to open the door. What is annoying, though, is when they leave the parcel without ringing the doorbell.

BanKittenHeels · 16/02/2020 13:59

Yep, I checked the timing between them knocking and me opening the door on the Ring and it was 15 seconds.

I do understand that they have pressure but honestly 15 seconds is no time at all? What about someone elderly or with less physical capabilities?

I’m assuming you were breastfeeding not just walking round with your boob out.
They are in really tight schedules but it’s a wonder any one gets their parcels.

I didn’t know this was a thing. I would happily do this.
I do always offer delivery people a glass of water if it’s warm or a hot drink if it’s cold.

Ha! Yes.

They have very little time yes. But also on a day like today I don’t blame them at all!

Pipandmum · 16/02/2020 14:05

I have a default on my amazon account to leave any packages in the porch. What gets me is sometimes they ring the bell to let me know the package is there - so I race to the door only to find it sitting there anyway.
Amazon people are generally fine its Yodel and Hermes I can't stand.

Paintedmaypole · 16/02/2020 14:06

Ridiculous that they are given so little time. Anyone with a disability can't get to the door. I don't mind if they leave the package but it's a pain if they take it away.

tallulahhulah1 · 16/02/2020 14:07

We have to remember how much stress amazon workers are under. Given that in the warehouse they are told to pack 2000 packages a day. And everyone is timing everything for delivery, it really is part of the parcel (pardon the pun) when you order from these type of companies.

OldHarrysGameboy · 16/02/2020 14:09

Watch Sorry We Missed You for more info. It's a shitty job demanding the impossible which works out at less than minimum wage. By 11 am the delivery person will already be around 4 drops behind a schedule that doesn't allow for geography, physics or actual passage of time, never mind traffic or weather. They don't care about you breastfeeding. They don't even care if you get your parcel. It's literally not their concern. Their job is to go to an unrealistic amount of drop off points every day. If they manage to do a drop off, great. But all they're required to do is say they were there, and even that can be beyond reach most days so they cut where they can to make it so.

BritInUS1 · 16/02/2020 14:10

Stick a note on the door saying, I am in please leave parcel

Sirzy · 16/02/2020 14:12

You timed then? Confused

Can you allocate a location as a safe point to leave things? Or put a note on the door saying “I may be feeding the baby please be patient?”

WorraLiberty · 16/02/2020 14:15

I do think your timing is a bit out because that means he rang the doorbell, wrote out a card, put it through your door, got back in the van with the parcel and started driving off, all within 15 seconds?

Having said that, YANBU that some deliverers don't give anywhere near enough time.

tywysoges · 16/02/2020 14:20

I had Hermes yesterday catch my attention when they put the (half pre filled!) ‘sorry we’ve missed you’ card through my letterbox. It was fine to just leave the parcel at the door, it would have saved him the card if he just rang the bell and left.

JRUIN · 16/02/2020 14:23

My delivery drivers tend to just knock and go too (postman included). I don't mind if they just leave the parcel in the porch but get the rage when they leave it in the (near)r empty recycling bin and I have to tip the bin upside down to get at the bloody thing.

Nacreous · 16/02/2020 14:24

I think I would put the fact that I was disabled on the additional delivery information if I was having this problem regularly. They are definitely on a very tight timescale.

StormBaby · 16/02/2020 14:26

I work in logistics and they get really very little time. We route very large household items for delivery and they get literally 6 minutes to get them in the house, unwrapped, signed for and a photo taken. It's insane.
