AIBU WHEN I SAY DYSON ARE S**T. I HAVE 3 IN TOTAL AND NONE WORK ON THICK PLUSH CARPETS

Posting here for traffic really. Sorry 😚. I have 3 different DYSON cleaners and none of them work on my newer deep pile thicker/softer carpets. It's ridiculous DYSON aren't cheap but they are vacuum cleaners so I should be able to physically be able to vacuum a carpet 😫🤦‍♀️. I have one of the uprights that has a big ball thing at the bottom to move around but that just sticks to my lounge carpet like glue and I physically cannot move it let alone the fact it will damage the carpet. It's ok on my hallway carpets that aren't as thick and deep. The other 2 I have are the the cordless that you charge on the wall. The newer one which cost about £500 will often start making a funny noise and flashing the filter even when there is nothing in the damn thing or when it's partly full 🤬. Does anyone have one that actually works on deep plush carpets and can recommend pretty please ☺️.

The most over rated product ever. We have had 2. First one broke after 3 years, my Mum replaced it for me and that one also died.
Got a Henry, at a third of the cost and it has worked amazingly well for 22 years.

Sugarplumfairy65 · 15/02/2020 13:18

Since we got all new carpets last year I haven't been able to push the Dyson over them. A win for me though because my husband now does all the hoovering

enjoyingscience · 15/02/2020 13:20

Get a henry. They are pretty light, very robust (mine has fallen down the stairs more than once!), and clean fantastically. Mine's been going at least ten years now. Bloody love it.

tootsey · 15/02/2020 13:21

I'm a cleaner. If your rooms are clutter free and open, I would recommend a vax upright for thick carpet. If open space is limited a Henry or Miele cat and dog. Dyson are crap. The number of them that I have seen lying in cupboards for the scrapheap is ridiculous.

Mintjulia · 15/02/2020 13:22

I’ve just replaced my 20yo Dyson with a new one. It’s awesome. On full power it can pick the sitting room carpet up off the underlay Smile

ClappyFlappy · 15/02/2020 13:23

Why do you keep buying them then if you think they’re shit?

I love mine.

Hingeandbracket · 15/02/2020 13:25

Fuck me, who knew vacuum cleaners was a more contentious subject than brexit and trans rights?

Absolutechaos · 15/02/2020 13:26

Ditched my dyson for a Miele cat and dog - love it (but we don't have long pile carpets, only short ones)

isseywith4vampirecats · 15/02/2020 13:26

I loved dysons when they first came out my first one lasted over six years but the last two I have bought one lasted two years the last one lasted just over a year had it serviced cleaned new parts over £80 wasted still didn't work right I now have a vax animal and its brilliant on 3/4 suction it slurps up everything my four cats throw at the carpets and it was half the price of the last dyson

GlamGiraffe · 15/02/2020 13:28

My sister and BIL own several vacuum cleaner and kitchen appliance shops. They have always said Dyson's go wrong more than any other vacuum cleaner brand on the market and have a very short lifespan. They always try to encourage people to buy other brands because of it, most people buy them because their brand has had such good advertising in the past
I have always had sebos on their recommendation and they are brilliant. If they get blocked or have a problem you can fully dismantle and repair them yourself in a couple of seconds. They last for ever and are very robust

Sgurley · 15/02/2020 13:37

Dyson v7 animal here. It’s definitely shit. Never again

UserV · 15/02/2020 13:42

@mummymayhem18

YANBU...

We bought one maybe 13 years ago and it was reeeeally good. It broke after 6 years, so we got another (around 7 years ago.) However, this second one was shit. Hardly picked anything up, and was just shit really....... We did complain to the shop we got it from, and they switched it for another (about 6 months after purchase...)

However. The replacement one was equally as shit.

So we put up with it for another 6-8 months, and then gave it to some people who knocked our door looking for tat/metal/anything remotely okay-ish...

SO we got a Henry on the advice of a friend, (so this was around 2013,) and he is amazing. Never fails us, picks up every bit on the floor, and is still as good now as when we bought him. Even 6-7 years later!

Would defo recommend a Henry. Would never buy a Dyson again. Like many other things that used to be good, they're pretty shit now!

DimplesMcGee · 15/02/2020 13:44

We replaced our dyson with a Shark and it’s been amazing so far. Heartily recommend them.

AllTheIceCream · 15/02/2020 15:02

Have you washed the filters?
You have to disassemble, get the spongy bit out, wash and dry, every ~6months

mummymayhem18 · 15/02/2020 15:52

Haha I meant plush carpets as in they are grey and thick and have a shine about them. Wasn't trying to sound stuck up 😂. Yes I wash the filter on my cordless every month. That's the one that you unscrew on the top of the machine . The main problem I have with them, well the upright is that I can't physically move it on my living room floor and I'm pretty strong but it doesn't budge. The problem with the lighter weight cordless ones when they aren't telling you to clear filter even when it's virtually empty is that it just feels like the opposite that it's just grazing over the top of the carpet and not getting deeper. I'm just worried getting something else and I have the same problem that I can't move it. They aren't cheap are they. Thanks for everyone's replies 👍 .

OP, have you contacted customer support? Dyson customer support are FAB. They will advise you, and send you out an engineer if needed, and they will sort it. And I have never been charged, even when my aged Dyson was out of warranty.

Not sure of your model, but if you get 'stuck' on your carpet, lots of the Dysons have a sort of loop or trigger thing by or on the handle that you can pull that releases the vacuum slightly.

londonrach · 15/02/2020 17:08

Hate dysons...we on our third in less than three years. It was a kind gift from pil but wish i could have choosen a henry or shark. They replaced my last one with a new room. Guy who collected my old one said he had a van of dead dysons. My parents hate theirs too. My mil has had hers for years and loves it.

TeddyIsaHe · 15/02/2020 17:08

Dyson are great. I had a Shark (bought because of good marketing techniques!) and it was the worst vacuum I’ve ever had the misfortune of owning. Big, clumpy, not sucky thing. I despise them.

Dyson v11 Absolute on the other hand... 😍 A dream hoover.

heath48 · 15/02/2020 17:10

Dysons are shite.Had two and they were useless.Got a Bosch now, love it.

ScarlettSahara · 15/02/2020 17:32

I like my Dysons too. Now on v10 stick. Our carpets are not very deep pile. Have found that sometimes filter light stays on even after cleaning filter but seems to be when battery is also on lowish charge & resolves after a full charge. Dyson helpline are helpful & did send me a new filter but original started working again.

Can’t compare much to other brands. At family home we had an old Electrolux cylinder with bags that wasn’t hugely effective. Friend doesn’t like Henry. Friend with dog likes Miele cylinder. ‘Which’ seem to like Dyson. I always wonder how much fluff is dust & how much is carpet fibre.

FrogsFrogs · 15/02/2020 17:38

My mum has had a couple that died, she's given up on them.

FIL has a really old one that weighs 3/4 of a tonne when I first have it a go I was on at DH OMG you can tell this was designed by men, it's ludicrously heavy and kind of way too big... I know they need to design stuff to meet the middle ground but this thing is ridiculous.

FlyingWithTheDevil · 15/02/2020 17:42

I've got a shark. It is my best friend I fucking love that hoover it's brilliant. It's lightweight. Slim. Easily stored. Cords long enough. And it literally glides itself across the floor and picks up every little bit

Skyejuly · 15/02/2020 17:47

Shark all the way!

Mummyshark2019 · 15/02/2020 21:47

Dysons suck and not in a good way. I have had so many. Now it is shark and I will never go back to dyson. Utter waste of money.

Mummyshark2019 · 15/02/2020 21:49

I wish people would stop calling vacuum cleaners "hoovers". Fyi people, Hoover was a brand of vacuum cleaner.....
