I have one. Mainly to watch TV in bed or on the go. No problem at all, works perfectly.

SpoonBlender · 14/02/2020 10:40

Yeah, they're okay. They're pretty low-end tablets, but fine for browsing and whatnot. It'll be a lot better than the old Fire 6 you had, more modern insides as well as the obvious being bigger.

katcatkat · 14/02/2020 10:44

Slightly better option as you dont get the adverts and have the full google play store is www.argos.co.uk/product/8843252

sugarbum · 14/02/2020 10:45

I have one. DH got me it for christmas and I love it. Got all my tv on there (netflix, prime, now tv and the virgin app) Have to fiddle with the netflix app now and again when they do an update and it kills it. Other than that I don't use it for much, unless we are on hols and DS1 uses it for roblox.

Angeldust747 · 14/02/2020 10:49

They have offers on quite often so if you can, hang on for a bit to see if it gets reduced? I got my mum one for Christmas and it does everything she wants it to, but as pps have said it's not got all the apps as its amazon's store not Google play. Depends which apps you want, download the amazon app store on your phone and have a browse to see if there's anything you would want that isn't on there x

Inextremis · 14/02/2020 11:05

I've had one for a while now and I love it. It stays on charge all day, then comes to bed with me at night for watching TV and Netflix, playing games and scrolling through FaceBook. It's also good for reading whilst travelling, plus it's Alexa-enabled (you can put it into 'Show mode' and it acts like an Echo Show. Highly recommended! The camera's not great, but most people have a phone for that.

buttermilkwaffles · 14/02/2020 11:59

Would wait until it's reduced again, was £95 in December, so I got mine for about £75 with an Argos 20% off gift card from Complete Savings cashback site. As pp said, they seem to drop the price quite often. For £150, I think I would pay a bit more and get so something like the Xiaomi tablets which are around £200 or maybe a Samsung or Lenovo. For £50 more you get full Android, Play Store apps etc, better specifications and aren't locked into the Amazon ecosystem...

That said, my Fire HD is currently useless as when I put in my pin code it doesn't unlock, just returns to the lock screen, so I cannot use it. Have Googled and contacted Amazon, but still cannot get it to unlock, very frustrating.

foreverhungry2409 · 14/02/2020 12:03

I love mine! So convenient and lightweight. I also pay monthly and it's just been a lot easier and better financially.

Mydogatemypurse · 14/02/2020 12:05

Yes they are worth the money. I like others got the deal where you pay monthly.

Hont1986 · 14/02/2020 12:45

I got one of those, I thought it was alright for the price. It's a bit slow and couldn't compete against an iPad but it's fine for Youtube and idle browsing.

I'm sorry I think YABU, where is the "dilemna" here? It's a good tablet, it won't set the world on fire (excuse the pun) but it's fine. Buy the tablet that's right for you. Good luck.

unbalancedBella · 14/02/2020 13:42

They are Android tablets with Amazon's own version of the operating system. They are deliberately cheap with "good enough" screens and speed, etc. They won't compete with iPads - but they are a fraction of the price.

I have one and it's great for streaming video, social media apps, and the like. Let's face it: that's mostly what people do on their iPads. DH reads comic books on his.

I believe with a bit of geekery you can install the Google play store on one.

scaryteacher · 14/02/2020 14:09

I've had a Fire since 2013 and I love it. I can get the games I want, have my Kindle books on there, can watch movies, read the news, bank online and send emails, which is all I need it to do. I have a desk top for everything else.

We bought Mum one for Christmas as her iPad is dying; and neither my brother nor I could justify the kind of spend on a new iPad for her to read the Mail online and send emails.

Didshereally · 15/02/2020 07:58

Be aware that amazon Fire tablets become faulty easily. We have had 6 in our time. They do everything you need, really fab however they just don't last long.

Only one lasted just under 3 years and each of the others stopped working after 10-21 months. They won't turn on or charge. Amazon won't refund if they are over a year at old. I got a 15% off my next HDfire purchase for the one that by failed after 15 months as I really pushed it with amazon customer services.
You can't even wipe them if they suddenly turn off.

GetMeOffThisCycleOfMisery · 15/02/2020 16:11

I regret wasting money on two Kindle Fire tablets. We bought one each, bought memory cards for them too.

Started downloading apps, then downloaded a programme on All4 to watch on the plane, went to download another and the memory was full. All I had on there was a few apps and one TV programme download.

I looked at the storage and everything was saved locally on internal memory, not on the memory card. I couldn't see how to move stuff across either.

Called Amazon, they informed me that what you can move onto the memory card is down to the individual app developers, not Amazon.

Out of all the apps I'd downloaded (iPlayer, More 4, ITV Hub etc.) not one of them allowed you to save programmes within the app onto the memory card.

So I asked Amazon how to uninstall all the apps that were factory installed on the tablet, so I can free up some space. Was told I couldn't uninstall factory fitted apps. Even though I had no use for them.

So essentially I spent 200 odd quid on two tablets to surf the internet on. Waste of money. Which I'd done my research.

I bought a Samsung Tab 10 last month, which is fantastic.

Voila212 · 15/02/2020 16:18

I have 3 kindle fires and love them. I love the 7 for reading, the 8 for browsing and the 10 for watching Netflix. I use the 7and 8 fires constantly and have them years.

Princessfaffalot · 15/02/2020 16:19

My kids all have them, they’re great tablets and easy to navigate.

MogHog · 15/02/2020 16:36

Love mine. Use it for watching in bed when I don't want the big TV on. Got all the apps on it, Netflix, prime, sky go, BBC IPlayer, itv etc. So can watch live tv too.

MogHog · 15/02/2020 16:39

As for the memory. I download loads on to it to watch offline. Never had a problem with it filling up, just delete as I watch.

debranz · 18/02/2020 12:36

It depends what you want to use it for. I had an amazon fire tablet and sent it back as found it too slow for the kids to play games on. You also need a bit of tech know how to get the playstore installed on it, as by default, you only get access to the amazon appstore which is not as good. I replaced with a 10 inch Lenovo tablet, which is much better.
