Are your 9 year olds still in high back boosters?

As above ^^ DS is nearly 9 and still in a high back booster. He’s happy in it, still fits in and it’s safe so planning to carry on.

I’ve realised a lot of his friends are now just in booster cushions or nothing at all.

Aibu for keeping him in the seat for as long as possible?

My 9 year old swapped less than a month ago - but only because despite the adjustible headrest it didn't go up high enough for him

MyDcAreMarvel · 12/02/2020 20:46

Yes , my nine year is only 123cm. She will be using it until she is 150cm. You only grow out of them when your ears are above the top of the car seat not when your head does.

BertieBotts · 12/02/2020 20:46

Yes very possibly. I was taking DS2 in a friend's car the other day and borrowed their car seat, when I went to get him out I accidentally sat in her child's booster seat on the outside seats (baby seat was in the middle) which was a Cybex one and I was really surprised by how roomy it was. I know ours was a cheaper model at the time we bought it, so it could have been an older one.

Thank you preponderings - the issue is plenty of car seats say they go up to this or that cm mark but in reality they don't. Unless it's an i-size seat there's no requirement for them to be tested with a dummy of that size. The Rodi airprotect and Rodi SPS are likely to be the same shell with slightly different features - SPS stands for side protection system which is a maxi cosi trademark, and the air protect (AP) ones have mini sort of airbags within the headrest. There are other variants of the Rodi as well.

Yes, we had this issue with the previous stage. DC1 grew out of his Britax harness one when he was 2 and 2 months Angry

InglouriousBasterd · 12/02/2020 21:01

No, DD is 9 and just over 5ft and it was just uncomfortable for her. Only used when in parents car anyway (London, no car here).

HeyMicky · 12/02/2020 21:02

The law is age 12 or 135cm. I'll be leaving mine in theirs as long as they fit and I can convince them to sit in them.

BertieBotts · 12/02/2020 21:02

Yes, that's a huge problem! Group 1 seats are sold as up to 18kg which is quoted as being age 4-4.5, but this is an average ,and the seats are generally designed to be outgrown by height before weight so you don't accidentally overload the harness capability. So in reality they are designed for children up to 105cm, which is the end of size 3-4 in clothing - and if you have a tall/larger than average child they may be in age 4-5 even before their third birthday.

Luckily more seats are coming onto the market now which are designed for up to 25kg, again they are built smaller so that the harness is not overloaded - but with a larger height in mind, around 122-125cm this time, which is the end of age 6-7 clothing instead. Average sized children will get to age 5-7 out of these seats. Very tall/large children age 4-5. But that's a much better prospect than a 9-18kg or up to 105cm (i-size) seat which may be outgrown by a very tall or large child around age 2-3.

If you are looking to move a child out from their baby seat and don't have siblings to stagger the seat stages through, this is worth being aware of.

NeedAUsernameGenerator · 12/02/2020 21:04

Yes, my nearly 9yo is in one (137cm) but my 10.5yo has just outgrown hers (147cm).

Emmelina · 12/02/2020 21:05

Mine is. He’s a shortie at 126cm. I don’t feel the booster cushion is safe on its own, there’s a safety video on YouTube comparing them. There was talk of getting rid of the boosters altogether at one point, I don’t know if they followed through.

Iggly · 12/02/2020 21:06

^this

My 10 year old is still in one.

yellowallpaper · 12/02/2020 21:11

I thought they were not advised any more because they're not safe? Booster seats that is.

Blankscreen · 12/02/2020 21:14

Da is 9 and is 144cm and weighs 5 stone 10.
We've only just ditched his seat as it was too small on his shoulders so we figured it needed to go. It was one of the larger styles so he's simply out grown it.

WreckTangled · 12/02/2020 21:31

Bertie mine are in the Britax romer. Dd is 144cm.

Thislife2018 · 12/02/2020 21:35

DS (9) came out of his once he went over 145cm which is what the booster went up to. He’s huge compared to his class mates tho. He doesn’t use anything now.

DD is 7 and 128 Cm and still in hers and will be till 145 Cm like DS which will probably be past 9 yo.

nonicknameseemsavailable · 12/02/2020 22:23

I sought further advice and was told 150cm is the safest height to keep them in high backed ones until.

DaveGrohlsMuse · 12/02/2020 22:52

@yellowallpaper simple booster seats should only be used if there is no other option. This thread is about high back boosters, which is the recommended safe way for kids to travel up to 150cm.

ActualHornist · 12/02/2020 22:56

Mine is, he’s 121 cm tall - he’s the shortest in his class. He’s 9 in October, and unless he has a growth spurt I suspect he’ll still be using it then. He’s not arsed.

Pollaidh · 12/02/2020 23:04

Britax romer Kidfix here too. Very adjustable for height.

tywysoges · 12/02/2020 23:12

DD is 10 and still in hers but she’s only 128cm and 25kg.

Most of her friends have been out for ages though, even the small ones only use the booster cushion (DD has one but only uses in other people’s cars).

Booboostwo · 13/02/2020 06:40

EU guidelines are 12yo, 36kgs and over 150cm. Each requirement relates to different safety features.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 13/02/2020 06:51

DD is 10 and she is extremely tall, I made her use a car seat until she was 150cm but that was when she was around 7/8. Lots of her friends still do though and I insist on it if I am taking them out and they are under the recommended height.

reluctantbrit · 13/02/2020 07:39

Even when DD was over 1.35m she was still on one as she always complained about the seatbelt on the odd occasion she was in another car without a seat.

Lots of other countries have a height limit of 1.50m, for good reason in my opinion.

I think we ditched it when she reached that height, she was 10 at the time but she is taller than average.

happytoday73 · 13/02/2020 07:44

My eldest staying in his maxi cosi rodi until he was just over 10... He was over 135 from 9 but I kept him in it till he didn't physically fit in it to keep him safe. Many of his friends were just in a booster from about 8 so we had a few discussions about why they weren't..

StiffUpperQuip · 13/02/2020 07:55

DD is 10 and in a high back booster. DS is 7, same height as his sister and is also in one. Both are tall enough to not legally require one. I however, prefer to keep them as safe as humanly possible.

honesttogod · 13/02/2020 08:04

My DS is 8 isn't in a high back booster anymore. He's nearly 150cm tall and quite big.
