Are your 9 year olds still in high back boosters?

As above ^^ DS is nearly 9 and still in a high back booster. He’s happy in it, still fits in and it’s safe so planning to carry on.

I’ve realised a lot of his friends are now just in booster cushions or nothing at all.

Aibu for keeping him in the seat for as long as possible?

Yes she is. Shes nearly 9 and still fits fine and it has an adjustable headrest.

elliejjtiny · 12/02/2020 20:09

My 9 year old is still in a high back booster. My nearly 12 year old uses a booster seat.

56Marshmallow · 12/02/2020 20:09

My 9 year old is 150cm.and still fits in his (Cybex - designed for European market where it is the law to stay in one until 150cm). He didn't use it a couple of times and asked for it back! He likes to have a little snooze in the car and it was more comfortable for him. My 135cm 11 year old is still in hers but she's not too happy about it. There is a leaflet somewhere that shows when they're tall.enough to safely stop using one ie knees safely over the edge of the seat, back up against backrest, feet flat on floor. She is not yet tall enough to do that.

Many people at my school don't bother even when they clearly are under 135cm. I've seen 3 year olds without even a seatbelt on, let alone a booster cushion!!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/02/2020 20:10

8.5yo DD is about 138 cm. She's just moving onto a booster cushion as her sister grew out of her smaller HBB. DD1 was on the top setting of the taller HBB.

If he fits and is comfortable, keep using it. But there is a massive variation on HBB size, so I can see how parents can think they are outgrown if they have a smaller one.

weebarra · 12/02/2020 20:12

My 9 year old is still in a hbb. My 12 year old is v skinny and still could be.

Pollaidh · 12/02/2020 20:13

Very light 10 year old still in one and will remain so until they actually grow out of it. Occasionally has just a booster when having lifts with friends, but I've noticed most friends' parents still have their 10 yr olds in high back boosters too.

I was in an accident earlier this year and I was much more injured than DC in the back in a top rated Britax high backed booster.

My DTs came out of theirs about a month ago age 10. They were 153/148cm. Once they were above 135cm I was less fussy about local trips (would go in friends cars without a booster), but aimed to have them mostly in a HBB till they reached 150cm. I made my parents use them too.

waterbottle12 · 12/02/2020 20:16

My 11 year old moved out of hers a couple of months ago.

AlphaHotelFoxtrot · 12/02/2020 20:17

Mine 9 year old isn't, because he is very tall and doesn't fit in it anymore 🙂 some friends are in a hbb, some aren't.

Logoplanter · 12/02/2020 20:19

DS is almost 9 and 144cm and still in his. I've done some reading about it recently as we are going on holiday and I was wondering about taking the car seats. Seat belts in cars as designed to fit people 150cm and above, so even though legally kids don't need a seat from 135cm the seat belt won't fit them for quite some time after that. For DS according to the centile charts that won't be until he's nearly 10 and he's on the 98th centile for height.

preponderings · 12/02/2020 20:24

My 10 year old is about to come out of one. He looks rather squashed and is just under150cm but with a long body so probably would be better on the seat (legal where we live is 150cm or 12).

reefedsail · 12/02/2020 20:26

Mine is 155cm and 55kg, so no!

megletthesecond · 12/02/2020 20:26

Mine were just on the booster cushions by that point. Oh the arguments we had about them until they were about 10 and they were too tall to need them.

Sirzy · 12/02/2020 20:27

Ds is 10 and 135cm. He is still in a HBB and I have no plans to change it any time soon. Safety comes first.

KittenVsBox · 12/02/2020 20:28

My 10.5 yr old has recently one out of his hbb as he grew too big. He pretty soon asked for a booster cushion for my car (but not DHs).
My nearly 9 yr old is in a hbb, and will be for a while, I suspect.

BertieBotts · 12/02/2020 20:30

Would love to know what models you all have if your kids are able to fit in them past 135cm. It's a question that often comes up on the car seat advice pages but I don't feel like I have the requisite age of child to warrant going round all the car seat shops with a tape measure!

The Cybex Solution (circa 2013) was the one we had that DS1 outgrew. I would guess he was about 135-138ish cm at the time. He previously had a Britax Adventure which I am sure had more clicks to increase by, but it got damaged on a plane so we replaced it.

We are in Germany so the law is 150cm here. I made him use a backless booster until he got to 150cm. He used it for a month or so after reaching that milestone because the seatbelt was still over the soft abdomen rather than his hips. He's skinny.

CurlsandCurves · 12/02/2020 20:31

My youngest grew out of his at around 7 or 8, can’t recall.

But then he is now 5ft4 at age 10, so you can see why 😆

Looneytune253 · 12/02/2020 20:36

Yanbu at all if he's comfortable In it and he's not too tall. My daughters massively tall though and had to come out of hers about 7 year old lol

Vinorosso74 · 12/02/2020 20:36

My Dd has just turned 10 and is at least 150cm. She didn't fit in hers at 8 so we stopped using it then. It varies between children so much though.

preponderings · 12/02/2020 20:38

We have a maxi cosi Rodi (air protect? I think).

FizzyIce · 12/02/2020 20:40

Dd is 9 in a couple of months and still in a highbacked booster .
She will be for the foreseeable

sleepylittlebunnies · 12/02/2020 20:40

DS12 is 170cm following a massive growth spurt but was happy in a hbb at age 10, he liked being able to rest his head. DD just 10 and 148cm stopped using one a few months ago, was finding it a bit narrow since puberty. DD8 is only 125cm and will be in one for a long time yet, we’ve kept DS and DD1’s old ones and use for DD2’s friends.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/02/2020 20:40

DD stopped using one a while ago. She was sitting too high up and I didn’t think it looked safe.

She is 8yrs and 146 cm, so she was outgrowing my car with the HBB.

Booboostwo · 12/02/2020 20:41

BertieBotts my DD has the Cybex Solution, she’s 138cm and the seat is not at its highest position yet. Maybe it’s a newer model?

preponderings · 12/02/2020 20:41

Or maybe it's the maxi cosi rodi sps. It's not impossible we have one of each, or they changed the names since we bought them. But they both go to max height 150cm.
