to ask if you can powernap, how do you do it?

After reading the thread about the woman napping in the loos, it made me envious that she could do that!

Even if I go to bed in the afternoon, it can take me over an hour to have even a ten minute sleep.

The thought that I could close my eyes for ten minutes and actually sleep and recharge is just amazing.

Is there a knack to powernapping?

Sorry for the vote.

I wish I could do this. Someone please come up with an answer

rubydoobydoo · 12/02/2020 18:54

I voted YANBU as I'd love to be able to do this too - but I struggle, even in bed, in a dark room, for a couple of hours....

Aquamarine1029 · 12/02/2020 18:54

I have never been able to power nap and don't understand how other people can. My mother can lay down, instantly fall asleep, sleep for 15 minutes and pop up refreshed and ready to go. Boggles my mind! Wish I could be more helpful, but I think it's just one of those things you can do or you can't. I definitely can't.

Chamomileteaplease · 12/02/2020 18:57

Ooh, Aquamarine1029, has your mother not shared her secret? Smile.

That is what I don't want to hear, that you can either do it or you can't! I want to learn and I seem to not be the only one Smile.

I lay down, shut my eyes and go to sleep and wake up twenty minutes later refreshed. I still sleep well at night too.

Thankssomuch · 12/02/2020 18:58

You can’t learn it. You can just do it or you can’t.

lidoshuffle · 12/02/2020 18:58

Yes, I agree it's one of those things like a swirch in your head you can turn off and on. I'm not sure you can train yourself to switch off - or it'd take too long, longer than the nap!

I'm so lucky and can even grab 5 mins under my desk and wake up like I've had a few hours kip, completely rebooted.

meredithgrey1 · 12/02/2020 19:00

Even if I manage to fall asleep Ill wake up feeling awful. I get horribly groggy, and end up feeling a bit sick.

frankie001 · 12/02/2020 19:01

Can’t power nap. If I do nap, I wake up not even knowing what century I’m in!

wouldyouadamandeveit · 12/02/2020 19:01

I can v easily power nap on the sofa, covered in a blanket.

Helps to be laying down with head rested on a cushion before I start, with something a little bit interesting on the TV, slow my breathing down and whoosh! Sometimes 20 mins sometimes an hour. Have to say it does take practice though.

Oblomov20 · 12/02/2020 19:01

I can do it easily. Siesta, nap, whatever. Lie down, asleep within a few minutes.
Doesn't disturb the night sleep at all.

2020newme · 12/02/2020 19:01

I agree with PP I don't think it's something you can necessarily learn.

I can fall asleep anywhere/any time.

TW2013 · 12/02/2020 19:02

I listen to podcasts to go to sleep at night, in the day if I am tired I just pop a podcast on and cuddle up under a blanket. Helps that I work from home and manage my own timetable. I know that I am more productive if I have a 20 min sleep rather than fighting it for 3 hours.

Undies1990 · 12/02/2020 19:04

I can powernap but only if I lie down on a comfy sofa or bed. If it's too quiet, my mind starts racing so I can't sleep but I have found if I have something on in the background (BBC news is good as it's soooo boring to listen to!) I can nod off quite quickly.

10/15 minutes is enough to wake up refreshed. Any longer and I risk waking up grumpy and then can't get to sleep at bedtime.

I hope that helps

troppibambini · 12/02/2020 19:05

Yup I can do it. I can sleep sat up, leaning on my hand, On planes anywhere.... quick 15 minutes and I'm refreshed.

I don't know how though I just shut my eyes...

I had a nap in the middle of Xmas day just put my head down in the middle of trivial pursuit.

lljkk · 12/02/2020 19:06

My brothers can nap anywhere any time. Sigh. I need an hour on more to fall asleep. Me jealous? You bet!

Welshmaenad · 12/02/2020 19:09

I am constantly knackered thanks to a chronic neuro illness, so I literally just have to close my eyes. Sometimes it's almost involuntary - my BF calls them 'power-downs'. I can literally sleep on a chicken's lip.

Yesterdayforgotten · 12/02/2020 19:11

I have learnt to nap more quickly and easily through utter exhaustion from having dc. Through the night feed baby, have an hour repeat. Ordinary I couldnt do it though and def not for 10 mins, I would just be resting my eyes

scrivette · 12/02/2020 19:13

I have always been able to do it.

If I plan it then I set an alarm for 15/20 minutes, lay on the bed with a light cover over me and slow my breathing. If I can't get to sleep within a couple of minutes I repeat 'am I asleep yet, am I asleep yet' so myself and I usually awake about a minute before the alarm.

annielennoxstuckinmyhead · 12/02/2020 19:15

I suffered with hypersomnia for years. It was actually a right pain in the ass. I could never sit for longer than 5 mins on the sofa without falling asleep ☹️ i could sleep for 24 hours straight and still not feel any better for it! however I'm now the opposite and can't sleep without medication. 🥴

TheTrollFairy · 12/02/2020 19:16

Yep. I sometimes hide myself away on my lunch break and take a nap.
I have RA which comes with fatigue though so I can nap any when Grin

TantricTwist · 12/02/2020 19:23

when I used to work in an office I would just rest my head in my cupped hands to look like I was intensely reading something and fall asleep, it helps that I have long hair which acts like a curtain.

quirrels · 12/02/2020 19:24

I have to be properly ill to nap. I would love to do it, then I mightbe able to stay up past 9pm.
I think there's some truth in the idea that it's in the genes. DH can and does fall asleep anywhere and everywhere. DS2 was the worst napper as a baby, never had a daytime nap after 14 months and yet now at 21 can do the perfect power nap. DS1is like mand can look haggard with exhaustion yet unable to nap.

Miggymoggymugwumps · 12/02/2020 19:24

I'm another one who can sleep absolutely anywhere at any time of the day. I just close my eyes and within a minute I'm in the land of nod!!! If I just want a quick nap I tell myself just have 20 minutes, & then I just wake up but if I want longer I don't set myself an end time & wake up when I'm ready. I've never really given it much thought as it's something I've always been able to do.
