to ask if you can powernap, how do you do it?

After reading the thread about the woman napping in the loos, it made me envious that she could do that!

Even if I go to bed in the afternoon, it can take me over an hour to have even a ten minute sleep.

The thought that I could close my eyes for ten minutes and actually sleep and recharge is just amazing.

Is there a knack to powernapping?

My DP is an excellent napper - he just goes for “a rest”, sets an alarm, then is bright eyed and bushy tailed 30 minutes later. I can fall asleep if I put my mind to it, but I wake up feeling like I have a terrible hangover, and completely disorientated. The only time I ever do it is if I am ill, because I feel like the benefit of the sleep probably outweighs feeling horrible afterwards.

On the flip side, I do tend to fall asleep quickly at night, and sleep pretty well. My DP is a bad sleeper, which is possibly why he has trained himself to nap.

I can't power nap at all, anything less than an hour and I wake with palpitations and i'm so weak and groggy. I envy those who wake rejuvenated after a 20 minute nap.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 12/02/2020 21:31

I fell asleep watching tv on Sunday afternoon sat bolt upright without a head rest.....

fuckoffImcounting · 12/02/2020 21:33

I take a nap for 20 mins after lunch every day. I usually read and drop off quickly. I don't get too comfortable though, or I could snooze my life away. I usually nap sitting in a chair. If I lay down, it could be a long time till I got up again.

Delbelleber · 12/02/2020 21:33

I find a day time nap helps me sleep at night, dunno how.... Falling asleep is easy but waking up again not so good

Luxembourgmama · 12/02/2020 21:34

I learned when I had kids you learn to grab broken sleep where you can. I can only nap in bed though

Saucy99 · 12/02/2020 21:35

Is your actual question 'how do you sleep?'. It's pretty obvious really.

whatdoyouthinkyouknow · 12/02/2020 21:35

I can power nap, but I have to be quite warm and cozy to drop off. If I'm at all cold I just lay there.

I set a timer so I don't go into deep sleep and feel groggy.

About 20 mins plus 10 mins to fall asleep.

Cauliflowerpower · 12/02/2020 21:42

Ooooh this is one of my super powers. I didnt see the thread about the person sleeping in the loo but I've done this at work before. There's only one set of loos at work with lids. And these are out of tbe way. When I went back of mat leave I was also having a flare up of my arthritis and this was a god send. 45 mins and I just about managed to get through the day! I sometimes go out to my car at lunch time of I'm having a bad day.

CorianderLord · 12/02/2020 21:44

My partner does this, he's just always bone tired and drops off like a flash

Branster · 12/02/2020 21:45

It just happens, not sure how and I don’t even need to set an alarm (but I do just in case), lie down, fall into a deep sleep, up in 20 min flat. I would only nap at home, in a hotel, car or plane never at work or when visiting someone or in any other public space unless I was in a war zone or similar as I think it would be disrespectful. However I can sleep anywhere if I have to and never have trouble falling asleep, I don’t have that difficulty in falling asleep or having uninterrupted sleep. So maybe that helps. But I can also stay awake for a whole day or run on very little sleep if I need to (work, travelling, looking after someone etc). I’m the same with food, I can go without for many hours without any difficulty. It’s a sort of catch-up system whereby you level everything out over a week so overall you sleep and eat as much as you would during a normal schedule. It’s like your body is trained to compensate when needed for basic needs.

CorianderLord · 12/02/2020 21:46

I can drop off for 40 mins but I wake up feeling like I'm made of lead. He struggles at night though whereas he sometimes checks I'm breathing cos I look dead

amaryl · 12/02/2020 21:46

Just wait for menopause

YappityYapYap · 12/02/2020 21:47

There's nothing worse than falling asleep randomly and waking up not knowing what century it is or anything

Thehop · 12/02/2020 21:48

I LOVE naps. My dh hates them and can’t do it properly, he wakes up groggy.

Northernsoullover · 12/02/2020 21:50

I can nap. The trick is not to go into deep sleep (alarm) to actually get to sleep though I might read or MN for an hour beforehand. I'm lucky I have the luxury of time (I'm a student) when I go back to work full time I will miss them.

KickAssAngel · 12/02/2020 21:52

Another queen of naps here. But can also be awake half the night if I don't keep it under control. Sometime's I go for a nap in my car durng my lunch break. On Saturday I had 3 naps 😃 actually, I also just had a quick 40 winks as I'm at the airport waiting fora flight.
I have certain silly memories I run over in my head to switch off.i also seem to be able to tell myself how long to sleep for, although I set an alarm as well.

Churchill loved in naps. Sadly,I can nap and I look like him but that's the only things we have in common. I'd love the bottle of champagne every day that he enjoyed.

dorisdog · 12/02/2020 21:52

I have a particular chair. It works everyime. 20 mins then refreshed. It's quite psychological - I can only nap in this chair. (And on trains!)

LynetteScavo · 12/02/2020 21:54

DH can power nap, but then he falls asleep as soon as he gets into bed. He can also wake up and jump out of bed too, whereas I struggle to wake up.

Nowayorhighway · 12/02/2020 21:56

My Dad always used to make us have ‘power naps’ on holiday. We’d go out for the day then return to the hotel for a power nap before going out for an evening meal. I didn’t realise they weren’t something only my Dad did until I reached adulthood Grin.

I can easily nap but I’ve always been a huge sleep lover.

Titsywoo · 12/02/2020 21:57

I can only nap if I'm really tired - so if I only got 6 hours or less sleep the night before. Otherwise no way.

cousinboneless · 12/02/2020 22:09

You can do it or you can't. I wish I could sleep on demand. 30 year struggle just to get enough sleep at night and I still can't win the fight. I envy those who can.

Chamomileteaplease · 13/02/2020 09:00

Is your actual question 'how do you sleep?'. It's pretty obvious really. @saucy99 - no that wasn't my question! I wanted to know if you can learn to sit/lie down and go to sleep really quickly and wake up refreshed 10-20 minutes later.

Very different to going to sleep at night when it doesn't really matter if it takes an hour to get off and you then sleep for hours.

There's nothing worse than falling asleep randomly and waking up not knowing what century it is or anything Grin, exactly, hence the need for a power nap which enables you to wake feeling refreshed.

Thank you everyone for your experiences and thoughts. I can nap but not quickly or easily and it seems I am not alone. I hope all you people who can do it appreciate your gift Smile.
