To ask if you would keep your child off school because of coronovirus?

We got a message from our school that a 'person in the school community' has come into contact with a infected coronovirus person and is now 'self-isolating' for 14 days. Whilst the school considers the risk low, we are told we can keep our child off if we wish.

I have no idea what to do. If we keep DD off, what then? Self-isolate? Surely that must be the only way to completely safeguard yourself but how practical is that?

No idea what to do for the best TBH

Would you keep her off if flu was circulating & she hadn't been vaccinated (my DC are too old for the nasal spray)? Keep in mind flu is always circulating.

My answer to that Q is No so I wouldn't keep mine off school.

BitchPeas · 11/02/2020 21:29

Are you in Bevendean? Grin

nellyburt · 11/02/2020 22:13

It's probably too late if they've already been in school so I wouldn't no

TheDarkPassenger · 11/02/2020 22:14

Any excuse not to do a school run so I’d probs keep mine off 😂

In all seriousness I’d ask the kids probably

SisterAgatha · 11/02/2020 22:14

Yeah I would

SisterAgatha · 11/02/2020 22:17

And every day in school, potentially infected, is another day full of opportunity to spread it further to those that aren’t infected

Aureum · 11/02/2020 22:17

I’d keep DC off and self isolate.

housemdwaswrong · 11/02/2020 22:18

Depends on state of general health I suppose. If asthmatic or inclined to chest infections etc then yes. If generally fit and well along with rest of family then no.

Strugglingtoquit · 11/02/2020 22:19

The person doesn’t have it, they’ve just been in contact with someone who does.

Unless your child has a suppressed immune system or would be especially at risk then I’d send them in. If the risk was that high the school would be closed.

Demigoddess90 · 11/02/2020 22:19

I’d keep them off. I wouldn’t take any risks

SisterAgatha · 11/02/2020 22:23

Doesn’t have it. Yet. Doesn’t have signs of it. Yet. Every person in contact with the coronavirus is a tiny vessel of potential infection for others. Keep inside and if you don’t have it, great no harm done. But if you do have it, you’ll have saved lives by not passing it on.

copperoliver · 11/02/2020 22:25

Keep mine off x

Mymycherrypie · 11/02/2020 22:27

Yeah I agree. Everyone who has passed it on must have, at some point thought they didn’t have it. Just because you don’t have symptoms yet doesn’t mean you can’t pass it on. I’d stay home, isn’t that just better for everyone?

FritzDonovan · 11/02/2020 22:28

Unless everyone stayed off for the same 14 days, the potential infection would have (potentially) been spread around different ppl on different days. So even if dc was kept off for 14 days from now, there would still be the potential for infection when they went back.

(I really should have looked up alternative words for 'potential'! Grin)

Incacat2 · 11/02/2020 22:28

The schools will close if it they get a case, so you won't have a choice.

eenymeenyminyboo · 11/02/2020 22:29

I would, but dc1 has serious asthma(ordinary cough hospitalised her for 2 days last year), if no serious health problems would send them in

GarlicSoup · 11/02/2020 22:29

I wouldn't hesitate to keep my DC off school - school work can be 'caught up' on, but I wouldn't risk their health if there is a possible risk.

Notstrongandstable · 11/02/2020 22:30

We've got the same message from our schools. I'm keeping them off, will see how the numbers pan out over half term.
We just don't know enough about it yet

Tigerty · 11/02/2020 22:30

Thankfully my two have robust immune systems so no I wouldn’t. However, if they had an autoimmune disease or something that makes them vulnerable they absolutely I would.

Incacat2 · 11/02/2020 22:31

To answer your question properly, no, I wouldn't, unless my child was severely asthmatic or had other health problems.

halcyondays · 11/02/2020 22:32

Keep them off of course.

mintyneb · 11/02/2020 22:33

My DD has cystic fibrosis so I probably would keep her off school

Mymycherrypie · 11/02/2020 22:33

Everyone is saying mine don’t have asthma, mine are robust, mine are healthy.

What about the people they might be infecting Sad

Demigoddess90 · 11/02/2020 22:35

Thankfully my two have robust immune systems so no I wouldn’t
And what if they got it and then passed it onto other people who haven’t got ‘robust immune systems’? Honestly the lengths some parents would go to to make their kids go to school! With absolutely no consideration for other people.
