Just catching up on This Mornings interview with a flat earther-can’t get my head around his debate but at the same time he makes some points that sound very realistic and he seems knowledgable . But I do believe our earth is round and not flat but very open to other people’s views , so just wondered what you think Mumsnetters?? Sorry if there’s been a thread like this before....
YANBU=our earth is round
YABU= it is flat

Is that the North Poll or the South Poll you're looking for?

Standrewsschool · 12/02/2020 16:13

@DgpGRosetti

I’ve had astronaut adverts appear on my Facebook as well. Spooky.

I actually thought Phil and Holly asked good questions to the Flat Earther yesterday. Phil challenged him regarding the space station etc. The only question un-answered was Holly’s about travelling around the world, (when I thought Phil interrupted a bit rudely).

@MoonlightMistletoe

More information on the object here - looks like a jettisoned panel rather than the S-IVB

history.nasa.gov/afj/ap17fj/03_day01_tde.html

Check the transcript from 03:43:35 onwards. The panels have to be jettisoned before the Lunar Module can be extracted. The rest of the images are worth looking at too, as they show the LM being extracted from the top of the S-IVB, which is where it was stowed for launch:

Only if you don't follow NASA (which I do Grin)

Kathygnome · 12/02/2020 17:30

The earth is round. That is a fact, not an opinion.

consfusedandlookingforwine · 12/02/2020 17:37

I watched a documentary on this. They spent a small fortune trying to prove the earth is flat only to have all the results prove that it is in fact round.

Rtruth · 12/02/2020 17:40

Is this even a question?

Is there any scientific publish papers that support flat earth???

MilesHuntsWig · 12/02/2020 17:44

I work in a company that designs and builds spacecraft that orbit the Earth. None of our missions would work if the Earth was flat coz... physics. It's utter nonsense.

LittleMissMe99 · 12/02/2020 17:45

I think it's good to ask these questions. We shouldn't blindly believe everything we are told. Go out there and discover these things for yourself. Just because I'm told the world is round should I believe it?

purplebunny2012 · 12/02/2020 17:47

There will be a good reason why you can't get your head around his argument, because it's bound to be codswallop

DGRossetti · 12/02/2020 17:49

I think it's good to ask these questions.

I could not agree more.

We shouldn't blindly believe everything we are told.

ditto

Go out there and discover these things for yourself.

yeah, it's at this stage the wheels fall off the bus though. Conspiraloons are very lazy - especially in the brains department.

Just because I'm told the world is round should I believe it?

Only if you have faith in your learning to rebut it.

The bottom line is a way I heard science and woo differentiated. Science invites and encourages scrutiny and scientists are more than happy to debunk bad science. Whereas woo merchants run a mile from scrutiny, usually muttering "so you're one of them ...." as they flee.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 17:50

Thank you mordred I shall have a read!

CBsDad · 12/02/2020 17:50

Of course I don't believe in a flat earth. But I can't tell you why, I just believe what I've been told I guess.

Same way I choose to believe in global warming, it seems that most people do and it makes sense based on what I was taught at school about the ozone layer.

Never looked into the research to support either though...

I'm not trying to be awkward, just that I think often we ridicule people but don't REALLY know why we believe what we believe as few of us understand the science behind it.

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 17:54

Has anyone heard the song Californication by the red hot Chili peppers?

"Space may be the final frontier but it's made in a Hollywood basement"

mencken · 12/02/2020 17:57

ask questions, indeed. Then (if you didn't flick your hair through school) assess the evidence. Some serious scientific and mathematical ignorance is required to think the earth is flat, even if you only believe your own eyes.

Rachel709 · 12/02/2020 18:03

I guess the 5% who voted the earth is flat don't think dinosaurs existed either.

csigeek · 12/02/2020 18:05

The earth is not flat
Vaccines don’t cause autism

People should stop listening to other people who have no qualifications or relevant learning in the field in which they are spouting their nonsense

MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 18:05

Doesn't this generally make more sense to you than the Globe though ? I know life itself is pretty complex but looking at both the globe and the other model this one "feels" right? (Even if it's not).
Even down to earths motion, do you remember looking up as a child thinking "are we moving or is the sky" how many of you were adamant only the sky, clouds everything else up there was moving?

On both sides there is an answer for everything.

You can see a dome in this image , has anyone come across the rocket videos of them hitting the "dome"? What are your thoughts on those also how do you explain the videos of people in space where you can visually see they are wearing some sort of harness ? Is that photoshopped too?

Flat earth- what’s your opinion??
MoonlightMistletoe · 12/02/2020 18:10

Btw I'm not trying to have a debate I generally just enjoy hearing other people's opinions on the subject. Nobody here has been up there and seen it for ourselves so everything is simply just a belief right now and not necessarily facts, just "hear say".

jigglybits · 12/02/2020 18:11

@Whynotnowbaby, I had an old friend do exactly the same. Wonder if it's the same person! She was already on the crazy side, but had a trauma or two and went batshet crazy. 😐

FelicisNox · 12/02/2020 18:20

I'm not getting involved in this one... I would be here all day.

The Earth is round. I believe in science not conspiracy theories with no credibility.

Flat earthers are just attention seeking twats.

Gingernaut · 12/02/2020 18:20

The Ancient Greek mathematician Eratosthenes managed to quite accurately calculate the circumference of the Earth about 190 years BC.

Our navigational systems, whether we travel North-South or East-West calculate our whereabouts based on Earth being a globe.

It's not just round, it's a sphere, like every other planet and star in the universe.

Why would we be on the only planet that defies astrophysics?

ZenNudist · 12/02/2020 18:22

Confused. Its spherical. We have pictures from space. Not a matter of belief.

Mordred · 12/02/2020 18:23

@ MoonlightMisteltoe "What are your thoughts on those also how do you explain the videos of people in space where you can visually see they are wearing some sort of harness"

You can't though - there is no harness. I've seen those videos, they're quite funny - they show nothing of the sort.

Wilkie1956mog · 12/02/2020 18:26

Well, it's surprising and worrying too how many professional apparently intelligent people (doctors, lawyers, professors etc) actually believe in creationism, especially in the USA. Seems like a person can be clever and well educated but absolutely barmy on one topic.
