whatever happened to the ploughman's lunch?

We didn't often eat out as children but did have the occasional pub lunch. My parents would ALWAYS order a ploughman's lunch - bread, cheese, cured meats, pickle, sometimes a pork pie, salad. It was seen (in the 70s and 80s) as a culinary delight.

They appear to have disappeared - are all the ploughmen now eating Vietnamese pho or Japanese bento boxes instead?

Ooh, I love a good Ploughman's, not had one in a few years though.

Grumpbum123 · 11/02/2020 10:35

All our local pubs still do it

BirthdayCakes · 11/02/2020 10:35

Move to East Kent?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 11/02/2020 10:36

It was a fad invented by a publican. Nothing to do with ploughmen

PineappleDanish · 11/02/2020 10:37

Other 70s pub classics like scampi or black forest gateau are still around, but I haven't seen a ploughman's on the menu for ages!

I actually had one last week and it didn't come with a pickled onion ..... I felt robbed !

FurForksSake · 11/02/2020 10:38

It was promoted by the Milk Marketing Board in the 60's and named the ploughmans, but people have been eating the combination for years.

Don't see many round here now most pubs are gastro and if you do they come with cornichons and sundried tomatoes.

PreggoFeminist86 · 11/02/2020 10:40

Well done OP, I am now desperate for a Ploughman's Lunch.

I'm gonna have to settle for a supermarket sandwich, aren't I? Sad

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/02/2020 10:40

Ploughman’s pretty popular round here (West Lancs) and a standard lunch at home.

PineappleDanish · 11/02/2020 10:42

Any farmers care to share what's in their packed lunch? Will be very disappointed if it doesn't involve crumbly cheese and pickle.

Plenty in the Dales.

I get to satisfy my Ploughmans desire on a regular basis when we go camping!

Hoppinggreen · 11/02/2020 10:43

I’m in Yorkshire and although you don’t see them in pubs as much most of the local farm shop cafe type places do them. One that is a bit more upmarket uses their own beef, ham, eggs, local cheeses etc and it’s absolutely delicious

TheMemoryLingers · 11/02/2020 10:43

I often see it on pub menus in summer.

Twittlebee · 11/02/2020 10:44

Oh I love a ploughman's! They are still about in some pubs in the countryside around here. Craving one now, seriously tempting to make myself one up for lunch!

anon2000000000 · 11/02/2020 10:44

I love a ploughman's lunch.

fairydustandpixies · 11/02/2020 10:44

The local pubs I go to all have Ploughman's on the menu, normally with locally produced cheese (I'm in the South).

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 11/02/2020 10:47

I love a good ploughman's! I would be seriously unimpressed if I got served one without pickled onions though Angry

PineappleDanish · 11/02/2020 10:47

The nearest thing our local pub has to a ploughman's is :

Wheatberry, apple & cranberry salad with roasted butternut squash & beetroot, spinach, avocado & roasted Omega seeds and a soy, lime & chilli dip

or

Mezze Platter chickpea & pinenut falafels, spiced red pepper dip, breaded brie, tzatziki, duo of hummus topped with Omega seeds & a stone-baked flatbread

Not quite the same....

I love a ploughman's - plenty on pub/cafe menus down here in the SW.

MerryInthechelseahotel · 11/02/2020 10:48

In those days it seemed like the only choice was Ploughman's lunch or chicken in the basket Grin

MerryInthechelseahotel · 11/02/2020 10:48

With a lager and lime

peachescariad · 11/02/2020 10:48

Pineapple same here with the occasional pub lunch treat and always a ploughmans, with a small, glass bottle of lemonade with a straw in it...
There was a ham version too but I cant remember it's name.

Nanny0gg · 11/02/2020 10:49

Loads of pubs here do them!

JacquesHammer · 11/02/2020 10:50

I'm in Yorkshire - pretty standard fare from cafes to pubs etc.

Skyejuly · 11/02/2020 10:50

See it here often in Suffolk.
