whatever happened to the ploughman's lunch?

We didn't often eat out as children but did have the occasional pub lunch. My parents would ALWAYS order a ploughman's lunch - bread, cheese, cured meats, pickle, sometimes a pork pie, salad. It was seen (in the 70s and 80s) as a culinary delight.

They appear to have disappeared - are all the ploughmen now eating Vietnamese pho or Japanese bento boxes instead?

A pub we visit in the better weather does it. It's quite a drive but really scenic route. It never left the 80s even the way the staff dress (white shirt black bow tie etc). It also sells chicken maryland and mixed grills. It's a hard choice. Not quite as bad as when they bring the sweet trolley round. It's awesome 😁

Mezze Platter chickpea & pinenut falafels, spiced red pepper dip, breaded brie, tzatziki, duo of hummus topped with Omega seeds & a stone-baked flatbread

In what world is falafel, hummus, a couple of other dips and a bit of brie 'pretentious'? Confused.

Its an option at our hospital menu and is delicious

Bluetrews25 · 11/02/2020 11:30

After we all go down t'pub for a ploughmans, will we have gammon and pineapple with chips tonight? Followed by apple pie and custard?

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 11/02/2020 11:32

Most of the pubs round here do a Ploughman's (south east)

FAQs · 11/02/2020 11:32

@MaidenMotherCrone that looks beautiful and I’m now starving!

ClientQueen · 11/02/2020 11:34

@BangGoesThatTheory with a prawn hooked on the side Grin

Ninkanink · 11/02/2020 11:36

@BarbaraofSeville probably in the same world where serving blinis with smoked salmon is apparently only ever done because people are trying ever so hard to be ‘posh’, or showing off. Hmm

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 11:37

I often do us a ploughman’s for tea on a Sunday evening after having a big lunch. Different cheeses, crackers, pickles, chutney, pork pie - it’s easy and comforting!

whoami24 · 11/02/2020 11:40

I want a Black Forest Gateau, it's never on the desert menu anymore, all bloody cheesecake.

Do supermarkets do them anymore?

I've seen ploughman's in some pubs but puddings are so boring these days

TwentyViginti · 11/02/2020 11:41

Ploughman's people - please give your best versions of a ploughmans. Which ingredients go together really well? Which cheese, what kinds of meat?

Sammi38 · 11/02/2020 11:42

I’m in the sticks in the west country, always a ploughman’s available at the pubs local to me. I love a good ploughman’s! Only ham though, I feel a bit cheated with a cheese ploughman’s.

Although I went to my local pub a few months ago and had a burger and chips, and the chips came with a small jug of gravy! Seriously the best thing I’ve ever had!

KatherineJaneway · 11/02/2020 11:42

Haven't seen one of these on a pub menu in years.

Lordfrontpaw · 11/02/2020 11:42

I ate a ploughman's lunch the other day...

He wasn't very happy.

(boom! boom!)

BercowsFlyingFlamingo · 11/02/2020 11:43

I'm going to have to introduce the dc to a veggie ploughman's now. I e not had pickled onions for years. No idea if they'll like them but I know my ibs won't thank me 💨

Disfordarkchocolate · 11/02/2020 11:45

I had one recently and it was amazing. I needed to have a nap afterwards, it was so filling!

Cheeseandwin5 · 11/02/2020 11:48

wow, that really is a blast from the past.
I don't remember seeing one on a menu for years.

okiedokieme · 11/02/2020 11:50

Had one 3 weeks or so ago, I make my own too

bettybattenburg · 11/02/2020 11:51

Dd has one a couple of years ago, it was poor quality so I'll be glad never to see one again.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 11/02/2020 11:52

Twenty

Mine consists of:
Few slices of mature cheddar
Few slices of Crumbly Lancashire (I love one that has cranberries in it)
Crackers (dh likes “posh” crackers but I like plain old Jacobs square crackers)
Spoonful of Plum chutney, spoonful of branstons pickle
Couple silver skin pickles
Grapes
Some nice crumbly ham
Small Pork pie
Halved cherry tomatoes

Cheese/ham/pork pie must be good quality.

I have mine with lashings of ginger beer (very Enid blyton) as it’s usually a Sunday and I don’t like to drink on a Sunday!

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/02/2020 11:52

the Mezze platter is foreign muck innit? Seriously though, I know countless people who wouldn’t eat any of that mezze, (which will likely be all bought in and “assembled” rather than cooked anyway).

And yes a ploughman’s is similarly “assembled” but more likely to contain local ingredients.

Sammi38 · 11/02/2020 11:54

I love a ploughman’s thats traditional and hasn’t been too ‘poshed up’.

RightestPersonOnMN · 11/02/2020 11:54

Ohhh, I could just go a Ploughman's and a big slab of Black Forest.

Lordfrontpaw · 11/02/2020 11:54

I could live on Mezza. I usually prefer the starters in restaurants where you can choose a selection of small plates with bread.
