Night nappy change debate

Howdidido · 11/02/2020 04:53

Help settle a disagreement between DH and me
I've been changing DD(3 months) wet nappy in the night but not wiping her down so as not to wake her after she dream feeds. Shes just wet not pooey.so just switching wet nappy for dry quickly.
DH says this is wrong and I need to clean her fully even if it means she wakes.
The thing is he would have no problem with just leaving the nappy on all night (nor would I but she will leak later in the night if I do).
So
IABU - youd be better off leaving her in old nappy the rest of the night as she wont wake/ you really need to clean her bum every change.
IANBU - better to change for dry nappy even if she doesn't get a bum clean.

Shes in pampers. She doesn't wake for wet nappies. It doesn't give her nappy rash. She has metanium on from when she goes to bed (but I dont put more on at dream feed/change). I clean her well in the morning.

She’ll be absolutely fine OP

loveskaka · 11/02/2020 04:56

I always gave a quick wipe.

orangejuicer · 11/02/2020 04:56

Get the + nappies if you don't have them already. I'm not sure why you need to change her in the night. And no do not wake the baby to 'clean' her. My DS is 14mo and has only once had nappy rash. A full wet nappy will not hurt her.

marmiteandmarmalade · 11/02/2020 04:58

No need to wipe in the night - you are doing what I did.

Daisy169 · 11/02/2020 04:59

They don't do the + nappies in the smaller sizes, which I'm guessing a 3 month old would be in orange

I have to change my baby too op and I'm definitely not wiping in the night! Have sized up a nappy and that helps but still have to do one change.

ColdCottage · 11/02/2020 05:13

I just put my daughter in the next size up overnight. Did sake with my son. No need to change then. No leaks and no sore bum.

Endeavour1971 · 11/02/2020 05:32

No need to wipe at all. As long as she doesn't get nappy rash all is good

PrincessPain · 11/02/2020 05:37

No need to wipe.
I always figured the new nappy would dry the bum off.
No happy rashes in my house.

puds11 · 11/02/2020 05:41

No need to wipe. I always change DD in the night though. No one wants to lie in piss.

MsChatterbox · 11/02/2020 05:41

No need. If dh wants to wipe, he can wipe and settle whilst you sleep in the spare room.

BinkyandBunty · 11/02/2020 05:44

My son stopped getting nappy rash when I stopped wet wiping him after wees. Just a blot with a tissue if he was damp.

Not sure if it was the ingredients in the wipes, or the moisture left behind, but the improvement was miraculous.

We don't wet wipe our own bits and we do ok!

JonnyPocketRocket · 11/02/2020 05:48

I wouldn't wipe in that situation. Have you tried different nappy brands to try and find one that doesn't leak? Pampers could never cope with a whole night for my DS (11 weeks) either but Asda's Little Angels brand can. Lots of parents really rate Aldi's ones too - I've never tried them. The Tesco ones were rubbish though.

Scottishgirl85 · 11/02/2020 06:00

Gosh I've had 2 children and NEVER wipe when it's not a poo, am I missing something?! My children have never had nappy rash. You are utterly mad to change nappy in the night if it's not needed Smile

GemmeFatale · 11/02/2020 06:00

He wants to wipe he is welcome to do the job. Are you breastfeeding or can you give him the night feed to do too as he’s already up sorting the nappy?

OnlyLittleMissOrganised · 11/02/2020 06:19

I started changing at night then stopped. Baby used to wake up. Now he goes all night in same one. They are meant to last 12 hours though I've never tested longer than 9-10.

Whoopsies · 11/02/2020 06:50

I wouldn't wipe! I still have to change my ds's nappy in the night as he feeds at least 3 times so it leaks if I don't, but I do it as fast as possible. Be careful putting any cream on at night though, they don't recommend using cream if there is no nappy rash, if the cream gets on the nappy it stops it from absorbing the wee and they are more likely to leak.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2020 06:58

Your voteing doesn’t match your DH opinion of wipe and your opinion of don’t wipe.

I agree with your DH. The nappy should be changed and you should clean your baby when you change her nappy. Nappy rash can be caused by leaving urine drying on the skin. Also thrush especially if a girl can be caused by it because leaving the urine on to dry will upset the ph of her genitals.

I used to warm up the wipe by holding it against my chest for a few seconds and then proceeding to change the nappy. They barely wake up even with wiping.

user1480880826 · 11/02/2020 07:01

Definitely no need to wipe if she’s only wet. Also, try a bigger nappy at night and you might find you don’t need to change it. I never changed nappies at night unless my son had done poo. He would feed 3x or more at that age and it still wouldn’t leak.

PlanDeRaccordement · 11/02/2020 07:01

To amend. I used washable cloth nappies for environmental reasons. I did not use disposable ones. So maybe it differs by type of nappy used.

Amatteroftime · 11/02/2020 07:14

My HV encouraged me to stop wiping at night, and actually to stop changing nappies at night unless they were full, as we wouldn't wake her to change her if she was sleeping through.

Made sense to us.

Squirrelpeanutbutter · 11/02/2020 07:18

When they start sleeping longer, you don’t wake them to change a nappy and they are fine. Don’t fret over changing her and definitely don’t disturb her to clean her, she’ll be fine.

Sceptre86 · 11/02/2020 07:19

I wouldn't change at night unless leaking. If I did then I would always wipe.

ferrier · 11/02/2020 07:23

Another vote for don't change at night unless it's bothering her, and if it is, you don't need to wipe unless she gets nappy rash.
Although I do wipe for wet during the day.
And the voting doesn't match the comments so I suspect people aren't reading your criteria properly.

WalesStar · 11/02/2020 07:24

I never changed ds at night unless he’d done a poo. We used Aldi/Lidl nappies though and they didn’t leak. I think pampers are crap. He’s 8 months now and I still only change him at night for a poo, it’s not worth getting him worked up.

firstimemamma · 11/02/2020 07:29

"IABU - youd be better off leaving her in old nappy the rest of the night as she wont wake/ you really need to clean her bum every change.
IANBU - better to change for dry nappy even if she doesn't get a bum clean. "

If she needs changing at night, it's a vote from me for wiping during nappy change time.
