Night nappy change debate

Help settle a disagreement between DH and me
I've been changing DD(3 months) wet nappy in the night but not wiping her down so as not to wake her after she dream feeds. Shes just wet not pooey.so just switching wet nappy for dry quickly.
DH says this is wrong and I need to clean her fully even if it means she wakes.
The thing is he would have no problem with just leaving the nappy on all night (nor would I but she will leak later in the night if I do).
So
IABU - youd be better off leaving her in old nappy the rest of the night as she wont wake/ you really need to clean her bum every change.
IANBU - better to change for dry nappy even if she doesn't get a bum clean.

Shes in pampers. She doesn't wake for wet nappies. It doesn't give her nappy rash. She has metanium on from when she goes to bed (but I dont put more on at dream feed/change). I clean her well in the morning.

I agree with you, but the other option is to change her before the feed rather than after.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 11/02/2020 07:42

3 months? Is she sleeping all the way through? I would change Ds before night feeds as it would wake him up a bit so he'd be awake enough to feed. Otherwise he'd nod off again then wake up later demanding milk!! I don't think I used a wipe though! Unless a poo. Maybe, as others suggest, HE could do it all if he wishes to dictate!

Winter2020 · 11/02/2020 07:53

I agree with you OP - if the nappy is wet swap it over without wiping. I wouldn't like to leave a nappy on all night that I already knew was wet as I think it would be honking by morning. Baby can have a good clean in the morning.

Absolutely fine OP wee is not the problem for nappy rash it’s the poo that causes it. I don’t think we ever had a problem with nappies leaking in under 10 hrs though so maybe a different brand if you don’t want to do a night change?

2019bride · 11/02/2020 08:30

My daughter won't wake for a wet nappy either but we change her using wipes and bepanthen when we do the dream feed just so she's sorted for the night. We use either aldi or morrisons nappies and they last from the dream feed at around 10pm until my daughter wakes around 7.30am. Might be worth trying some other brands of nappy 😊

NuffingChora · 11/02/2020 08:46

Absolutely would not change overnight for a wet nappy, only a poo or a leak. 2 babies in and it hasn’t harmed them yet...

NuffingChora · 11/02/2020 08:48

Also I wouldn’t advise using metanium routinely unless you’ve got a particular issue with her bum - it’s quite harsh and is intended as treatment for nappy rash. Weleda nappy cream is really excellent and very gentle, but effective.

GreyishDays · 11/02/2020 08:53

If what you are doing doesn’t give nappy rash, then carry on.

I never wiped for a wee at all.

Are you doing much more than baby wipes? I had friends who did a whole three step lotion and sudacrem performance for every nappy change, just in case which I think was how their mum told them to do it, but from when nappies weren’t as absorbent so the wee was more likely to have contact with skin. You really only need a baby wipe for poo and nothing else, unless you’re getting nappy rash.

Ebeneser · 11/02/2020 09:19

Surely if you wipe, you have to dry as well? Wiping and putting nappy back on surely just encourages nappy rash, especially if you use a barrier cream without drying properly.
I never used to change my son at night unless he had a poo. He'd very rarely have a nappy leak (unless I forgot to point his winky down, if it was pointing up he'd leak ).
I'd either carry on as you are or just not bother changing the nappy at night.

Damntheman · 11/02/2020 09:22

'Better to clean properly even if baby wakes' is a thing said by no person who actually then has to settle said baby in the middle of the night.

You do what works for you OP. If she starts getting nappy rash then you may need to reevaluate but I dare say overnight lack of clean is fine for just wee so long as she's getting a good wash in the morning and doesn't have sensitive skin :) Eventually she'll stop haing a nappy change at night at all and that's fine too.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 11/02/2020 13:05

I do what you do. If I don't change her she wakes up early because she's wet and uncomfortable.

Berrymuch · 11/02/2020 13:09

I would only change for poos, and then I would do it before a feed in the hope that milk would lull them back to sleep. For wees I used the + version of the size he was in, and no leaks throughout the night. If for whatever reason he was being irritated during the night I would wipe etc, but if not as seems the case then nope.

CecilyP · 11/02/2020 14:13

OP, what made your DH such an expert in nappy changing? I can’t believe the time I wasted wiping DS every nappy change when he was tiny, especially as he produced so many soiled nappies when he did have to be thoroughly cleaned. I soon learned the error of my ways and just took the wet one off and put the clean straight back on regardless of time of day. Also gave up creams of any kind. Nappy rash is avoided by changing soiled nappies immediately!

Howdidido · 11/02/2020 14:29

Thanks. Carry on as usual seems to be majority view.
Hes not dictating! Grin just what he thinks. We had such bad nappy rash with early antibiotics that I think hes paranoid!
Metanium is in case she poos and doesn't wake. Gives a bit more time before nappy rash hits
