To ask if you wore Bandannas?

Name changed for this one. (Not a journo!)

Was discussing the thread about 2000s nostalgia with two old friends and one of them remembered she used to go around town in a bandanna quite often, tied in the old school way.

Did anyone do this back in the day?

YABU - Never
YANBU - Yes (at least once)

Yep, I was a bandana wearer in the 90s.

Getoffmylilo · 09/02/2020 21:03

Ah Pinkyrosie - I still can't resist a checked shirt. I loved The Wag, and The Mud Club too.

Sexykitten2005 · 09/02/2020 21:05

I still wear bandanas. They look cute and keep my hair out my face during the summer

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:07

Sexykitten. Have to admit I rarely see them where I live.

Yes. With my double denim and clogs. Fml

501s or ‘dexy’ dungarees with blue red or white bandanna often in back pocket (did not have sexual preference message then) around the strap of the dungaree - never on hear or round neck. Early/mid 80s.
Still have a few which I use for walking/hiking rag/towel etc. Every time one is stuffed in my bag I think ‘come on Eileen’ !

DecemberSnow · 09/02/2020 21:08

Partner currently has one on !!

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:08

Funny thing is, I probably thought they were a new thing in the late 90s/early 00s.

in around 2008/9 when i was in my last year at secondary school they were a big thing in my area. each area or postcode of our town had a different colour and people would wear a bandana in those colours to ‘rep their ends.’ boys wore them around their necks/faces, girls on their heads. my area was white but i was never in that crowd so i didn’t wear them.

Pinkyrosie · 09/02/2020 21:10

Yes lilo - best times. Remember raw? Delirium? Oh for a time machine eh!

TrainspottingWelsh · 09/02/2020 21:10

Yes, in the 90's. Still wear them at home as a band to keep hair out of my eyes, and sometimes to festivals or gigs for the same reason. Mine were/ are more on the black lace, skull & crossbones etc variety than the flowery version.

HeronLanyon · 09/02/2020 21:11

I am sometimes a little upset they are used as dog collars. Feel part of my youth has been coopted ( even though dogs look great in them sometimes - they need to be a bit grotty and beaten up for a dog to really carry it off in cool way). I don’t think they are dog attire really.

Minxmumma · 09/02/2020 21:11

Possible cringe moment! Hmm I wore them when I lost my hair through chemo 5 years ago - less itchy than a wig and better than a beanie in the height of summer. And tbh, when I camp with our youth group I still wear them, keeps hair out of face, and all sorts out of my hair.

Relatives in the us (Midwest) wore them as everyday attire with dungarees (usually Oshkosh) m, cowboy boots, cowboy hats - all though several generations of farmers/ranchers. also worn with suits by many today in us partic south and Midwest without a hint of irony.

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:15

The gang thing is unfortunate. That seems to have come over from the USA.

nononever · 09/02/2020 21:17

I still do but generally when we are on our travels or hiking. Not hairband style though.

hauntedvagina · 09/02/2020 21:21

Never a proper bandana, but I do remember wearing some sort of head handkerchief type think. I think I got one with a matching top from Miss Selfridge.

Getoffmylilo · 09/02/2020 21:22

Pinky I still haven't recovered from them knocking down The Astoria on Charing Cross Road - all those Mud Club memories. Also Dirtbox, The Playground at the Lyceum, The Electric Ballroom in Camden. The best of times.

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:23

Haunted, do you mean a triangle with strings? I remember seeing those on holiday.

Sexykitten2005 · 09/02/2020 21:25

@MillennialGirl I have about 2 dozen in different colours. I’m a bit obsessed with them and have been wearing them all summer for the past 4 years. People to comment positively but thinking about it I rarely see anyone else wearing them. Ah well I’m 20 years out of date I’m ok with that!

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:26

SexyKitten, Do you mind if I DM?

OP posts:
DecemberSnow · 09/02/2020 21:30

MillennialGirl · 09/02/2020 21:32

DecemberSnow That's unusual but cool.

MyNameHasBeenTaken · 09/02/2020 21:32

I had a nice collection in the mid 90s.
I used to wear one as a belt in my 501s.
As well as Alice band, pirate hat, wrapped around wrist as a sweatband...
