To drive over an hour on the motorway today?

Myself and DS 1yo, visit a family member a few times a month, I'm supposed to be going today but now I've seen lots of posts about people staying in and being too worried to go out. Now I'm worried I've underestimated the weather and we should be staying put?
I'm in the midlands and I'd have to go on the motorway to get there (40 mins at least) and the rest around small towns.
Should I cancel or just carry on as normal?

The suffering of people in Bangladesh has nothing to do with the subject of this thread, which is whether it would have been a good idea to take your kid out on an unnecessary journey on a day with high winds and flooding forecast. Confused

That surfer must have been trying for a Darwin Award - it's to the credit of the emergency services (including the RNLI who are volunteers) that they didn't let him earn it.

I drove from London to the west country today and it was ok, took it slower than usual but it really wasn’t as bad as I expected, I’m sure I’ve driven in worse conditions!

"That surfer"! There were at least 20 on the news by me, all taking advantage of the waves.

The suffering of people in Bangladesh is normal apparently and therefore not newsworthy.

Aghast at that.

'Goodness me....it literally happens almost every year. Where have you been?'

In the world watching the news and hearing about the enormous human cost of flooding in Bangladesh on a fairly regular basis.

I wanted to find the most recent report to point out that your idea of 'normal' is still bloody catastrophic for the people involved and even though it happens regularly it's still worthy of being reported on.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 17:14

Bangladesh may not have been the op but sometime saying oh it's normal for them and they only bother reporting on it if it's a slow news day (ie it's not newsworthy) is just grotesque.

"The suffering of people in Bangladesh is normal apparently and therefore not newsworthy."
What a disgusting thing to say. My point was it happens every bloody year in places like Bangladesh, but it's hardly ever reported on, but we have one storm and its dramatised no end. You had to google it as you'd never even heard of it!!!!

You are an absolute idiot arent you. If you live in Bangladesh and get flooded out every year, lose your home and people around you die..every bloody year, that would seem normal to them because it happens a lot. Its grotesque that noone does anything about it or even reports it. That was my point....or did you not get that!! Often horrible things happen so often, it is normal.

Drove
Drove over some debris and cut my hand break cord ! So yeah , bad idea for
Me!

Don't you understand the difference between global news and information of direct current relevance to the local area?

The travel warnings were useful and entirely proportionate for my area. I'm sure everyone understands that weather systems are chaotic so the warnings have to be wider than where the flooding etc actually ends up occurring?

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 17:48

What you are saying you meant is 1000 miles away from what you wrote.

'It's like when it's a slow news day, so they report on terrible floods in Bangladesh. There have been floods in Bangladesh every year of my life, its normal out there.'

Maybe think about how you put things in future. 'it's normal for them' is grim.

And of course I've seen it on the news, FFS. Did you expect me to have the numbers for the most recent reports in my head?

Your original post was utterly dismissive.
