To drive over an hour on the motorway today?

Myself and DS 1yo, visit a family member a few times a month, I'm supposed to be going today but now I've seen lots of posts about people staying in and being too worried to go out. Now I'm worried I've underestimated the weather and we should be staying put?
I'm in the midlands and I'd have to go on the motorway to get there (40 mins at least) and the rest around small towns.
Should I cancel or just carry on as normal?

We often get wind at 80mph gusts in this country. They usually tell you afterwards what speed they were.

TabbyMumz · 09/02/2020 15:50

Lots of rivers flood too when we get stormy weather and bad rain. Again, not a unique experience. Probably happens every couple of years. When we dont get lots of rain, they tell us it's down to global warming. Very sad for the people involved though. When buying our house, I made sure it wasnt on a flood plain or near a river.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 15:51

So everyone should definitely go out and if they don't they're wusses.

Ok.

I find it really odd to look at houses under water and 93000 people without power and say meh nothing to get excited about Hmm

Heymacarana · 09/02/2020 15:51

I lost everything I owned in a flood 7 years ago. I am nit suggesting people should "suck it up" (although usually when somewhere floods its because its in an area prone t flooding, so hardly unexpected) but this really isnt that unusual and doesn't justify telling people not to travel ffs

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 15:52

Also feeble that so many fights have been cancelled.

Get those planes in the air! Pathetic behaviour.

Northernsoullover · 09/02/2020 15:55

It is a 'bit windy'. Tree in my street down which had fallen on to a parked car and a neighbours fence panel has been up and down the street. That would easily have killed someone if they had been walking past. I'm going nowhere.

JosefKeller · 09/02/2020 15:58

no, people should have common sense. That seems to be lacking these days.

It's an open forum, we don't all live in the same neighbourhood, there not one advice applicable to everyone.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 16:01

'This makes me laugh. It’s a bit windy. 20 years ago it wouldn’t have even been worthy of mention and now they are closing roads and telling people not to out.'

It's just a bit windy. Why not go out!

TabbyMumz · 09/02/2020 16:02

"I find it really odd to look at houses under water and 93000 people without power and say meh nothing to get excited about"
Power cuts arent unusual in this country, and certainly not unusual after a storm. It's just you often get this "too dangerous to go out", but when you go out there are hundreds of people out . If this was a week day everyone would be going to work as normal. We've been out, it was absolutely fine. We had bright sunshine and a rainbow before, it was beautiful.

Miljea · 09/02/2020 16:03

Um- the advice in Amber (wind) areas is to not make non essential journeys.

The wind gusts have picked up a lot over the past hour in southern Hampshire.

So DH has to go fetch DS from work as parts of the roof at his work (garden centre) were blowing off. Bit of a tortuous 2 mile journey due to fallen trees.

You wouldn't want that to have landed on your car!

It's like when it's a slow news day, so they report on terrible floods in Bangladesh. There have been floods in Bangladesh every year of my life, its normal out there.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 16:05

Storm? What storm. It's just a bit windy Fgs .

TabbyMumz · 09/02/2020 16:06

"Um- the advice in Amber (wind) areas is to not make non essential journeys."
They say that all the time. Usually people ignore it and go to work as normal.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 16:10

Most recent flooding headlines re Bangladesh

uk.reuters.com/article/us-southasia-floods/more-than-60-killed-hundreds-of-thousands-displaced-by-flooding-in-bangladesh-idUKKCN1UI1YX

Hundreds of thousands of people displaced = normal for them and only reported as a slow news day?

Crikey.

The empathy bypass of some on this thread is kind of interesting.

Exactly. its a very normal winter storm, but there isnt much else going on and its a weekend. If its the same tomorrow then al those banging on about not going out will have to just go to work as norma or get fired.

I am aware that millions are at work today and its no issue.

Winds over 100mph are probably news worthy and deserving of recommendations to stay in. This isnt

picklesdragonisawelshdragon · 09/02/2020 16:16

Perhaps it depends where you are. There are trees down across several key junctions in my area. Every car on the road increases the delays, if you can cancel you should.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2020 16:16

Going to work isn't a 'non essential journey'. Taking a 1yo to see relatives (who he sees several times a month' is.

Who was claiming this was 'unique' anyway?Confused it's not. We get quite a lot of weather warnings. If there's a travel advisory then if you don't even think about whether it might apply to you then frankly you're being a bit daft. Your choice, but the emergency services may not thank you.

TabbyMumz · 09/02/2020 16:20

It happens every single year!!! They only publish it when nothing else is happening in the world.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2020 16:22

I think I'll stick to getting my weather and travel advice from the professionals. They're not always right, but more likely than an internet opinion.

FrogsFrogs · 09/02/2020 16:27

Jesus Christ tabby it is not 'normal' for the people displaced from their homes, dying from water borne disease etc.

Your comments are really crass.

Fr0g · 09/02/2020 16:33

The empathy bypass of some on this thread is kind of interesting.

whereas the empathy bypass of the prat that decided it was a good day to go surfing in Hastings is unforgivable. Should be prosecuted for endangering life/wasting time of emergency charges. And required to pay the costs of the emergency services in searching for/rescuing him.

victoriashleigh · 09/02/2020 16:37

FWIW we were out today in the Midwest, weather wasn’t too bad when we left but suddenly turned whilst we on the motorway. Couldn’t wipe the windscreen fast enough even in the highest setting, couldn’t see a foot in front of us and had to slow down to 35mph. Quite scary actually.

TabbyMumz · 09/02/2020 16:39

"Jesus Christ tabby it is not 'normal' for the people displaced from their homes, dying from water borne disease etc."
Goodness me....it literally happens almost every year. Where have you been? They put it on the news every so often, so people are surprised by this when they see it, but it happens ALL the time. Et you didnt even know about it till you googled it. It's a flat floodplain and they have terrible weather and floods. It's not crass, its bloody true and shameful. Thousand die of water born diseases all the time.

user1497207191 · 09/02/2020 16:43

Trouble is that the weather forecasts often over-exaggerate, forecasting widespread damage etc., which usually doesn't happen, so people start to get jaundiced and simply don't believe it. The "boy who cries wolf" syndrome.
