AIBU to be angry about the speed and noise of cars?

I live in a tiny village. Little bigger than a hamlet.

Our cottages are on a little lane about 60 yards long. This lane leads to a dead end.

There is a nursery at the top of the lane. There are also houses at the end of the lane.

Our lane is about a car width wide and our cottages step into this lane. The lane is full of blind spots. You can’t see the top of the lane or the bottom so it is wise to drive slowly. The lane is used by people walking, horses etc.

There’s a steady stream of cars whizzing up and down the lane all day. The speed at which these vehicles travel is driving me mad. I am starting to feel intense anger every time a car goes past at what I think is too fast for the conditions in which it is travelling. It bothers me, a lot.

Not only that but it’s cars speeding in general. Cars whizzing around supermarkets. Driving too fast in general really.

It’s starting to make me intensely angry. Angry because it puts me and my small children in danger. It’s making me angry that other people don’t care about the general public’s welfare.

I know it’s not normal to feel this intense anger. We are absolutely considering moving to somewhere that doesn’t have through traffic. It’s an option.

My question is, AIBU to let this bother me so much? How do I control this anger? How do I let it go?

Thank you

I get pissed off with people driving like twats up and down yes.

I don’t know how to let it go? How do you do that?

Your wheely bins could also be placed stragically

BackyardChickens · 09/02/2020 15:42

ivykaty you can’t get two cars past at the same time.. it’s a single track tiny lane. Good idea though!

ivy yes I agree, or a strategically placed child’s toy left slightly onto the road Grin

Some people who break the speed limits are very precious about the paint work of their cars

DontCallMeShitley · 09/02/2020 15:45

Dig some pot holes in it so that people have to slow down, do it gradually so it looks like wear and tear. It looks as if it wouldn't take a lot of digging.

Although that would be criminal damage, and potentially more importantly, do nothing to help OP with the rage.

Have you always felt this angry about it? Is it the speed, or the fact that they are pretty much on your doorstep?

Do you feel angry about other things? Is this referred stress?

It does seem crap, but if nobody else in the village would support speed bumps or the like, they must be coping somehow... so I’d be looking into how to make this more manageable for you. Have you always hated it?

People speed past my house all the time and on occasion it drives me mad, especially like now when it’s been turned into a one way street so it’s always clogged and busy, but it only annoys me when something else is wrong if I’m honest.

Don’t make potholes as they are dangerous

How would a driver slowing down to get passed another car be construed as criminal damage? Confused

ErrolTheDragon · 09/02/2020 15:49

Dig some pot holes in it so that people have to slow down, do it gradually so it looks like wear and tear.

A bad road surface may make the noise worse and/or cause bad vibrations.

aroundtheworldyet · 09/02/2020 16:06

Buy a shit old second hand car and park it and leave it there. Obv don’t register it in your name. And wear a disguise when you collect it.

But on a serious note, if everyone else objects to the normal things like speed bumps or cameras then there isn’t a lot you can do.
I highly doubt their going over the limit anyway. It’s just they should be driving very slowly.

You can get window insulation that you can put on the windows. Try that?

I mean we all live with things that are very annoying! I live by an alley and the amount of people that think it’s a quite area to have a massive argument at 2am is astonishing. I fantasise about a high powered water gun! But then that’s the price I pay for living where I do.

You have to be a bit stoic about these things

aroundtheworldyet · 09/02/2020 16:07

Oh I like the idea of a toy (a plastic baby) placed in the road. It would scare the shit out of people.

But overall you have to let it go.

quitecontrary123 · 09/02/2020 16:13

Not sure how a lane 70 yards long is full of blind spots. Seems to me you are pissed off with the number of people driving past your house - you either accept that you can't change that and live with it or you move.

BackyardChickens · 09/02/2020 16:22

quite, see pictures I’ve attached.

I was expecting you to say the nursery was there before you moved in. In which case I’d have said YABU.

If the cars are going fast or the traffic has materially increased in a road that, quite frankly, doesn’t look as though it would withstand it I think you’ve got grounds to complain to the council.

aroundtheworldyet · 09/02/2020 16:41

Yeah I totally wish I could water cannon the
Aresholes.
Take up boxing!? Channel the anger.

BackyardChickens · 09/02/2020 16:44

Even if the nursery was there before, it still doesn’t excuse inconsiderate behaviour!

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 09/02/2020 16:47

No it doesn’t, but just as people that live near our local school whine about parking it would make you think twice about buying somewhere if you’re the type that that annoys. Our school was built in 1921 so pre-dates most of the houses, residents births and cars.

Did you consider the part about raising a compliant to the council?

BackyardChickens · 09/02/2020 16:49

Myself and other residents have complained to the parish council but they can’t really do much Sad

I think I just need to get over it but I don’t know how I do that? How do I learn to not care?

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 09/02/2020 16:51

I meant the actual council: the highways department.

aroundtheworldyet · 09/02/2020 16:52

Diazepam and gin Wink
Half joking

Are your neighbours on your side? Who objected to the last plans?

ivykaty44 · 09/02/2020 16:56

So other residents don’t like the noisy cars, would they also be interested in purchasing a speed camera? Perhaps club together if you live in Essex, as the police will give you half the fines

Spudlet · 09/02/2020 16:57

I’d be tempted to become a thorn in the side of the nursery owner in the hope that they might get so fed up they’d say something to the parents.

Also, do you have a community speedwatch? Our parish council organised one. Get some hi-vis clad people out there taking number plates down.
