To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

Hmmmm lets see how the poll is going..... 98% to 2% and im guessing you were one of the 2%

Pollaidh · 09/02/2020 20:57

Of course, the French pirates were actually working for the government.

happycamper11 · 09/02/2020 20:58

Am I the only one who thinks op has a point?
In theory...

Quick scan of the thread suggests yes!

bemusedmoose · 09/02/2020 21:09

Well Knights slaughtered people, princesses do FA waiting for a man to save them, PJ masks seem to be feral children with no parents prowling the streets at night and after reading a history of the vikings book given to my son age 7 (thank god I read it first!) they were always at the raping and pillaging - even at their village funerals where they would drug rape and slaughter young girls!! But kids still dress up as them too...... You can always find a dark side to something if you want to. But it's just a dress up party not the junior nazi league. Which by the way - most of the men fighting on the nazi side didn't want to go to war, just as our men didn't, but back then your own country killed you if you didn't.

Also I'm not sure you can really put genocide and ethnic cleansing in the same boat (pardon the pun) as rum soaked thieves.

But each to their own, dont go if you don't want to but I'll tell you now - there's lots of pirate parties, most boys in the class go for it for a few years and quite frankly your son will get cut out pretty quickly from friendship groups and loose out because you completely over think a costume.

My daughter loved being a pirate, one of the most successful pirates of all time was in fact a woman, but history books just leave that bit out. She's also loved being a cat, David Attenborough, a dragon, witch.... Hasn't affected her in anyway at all.

mytypeonpaper · 09/02/2020 21:12

Oh lighten up and let you kid be involved

TakeNoSHt · 09/02/2020 21:13

Send her as a ballerina (referencing previous pirate/ballerina post)

TakeNoSHt · 09/02/2020 21:16

Him sorry for typo

MrsBadcrumble123 · 09/02/2020 21:18

Is this a joke?

OVienna · 09/02/2020 21:22

Is this in classics yet? Haven't read it, tbf, but seems it could go the way of T-Rex.

augustusglupe · 09/02/2020 21:36

Oh I don’t know OP DD would’ve loved a Nazi party when she was little, all that marching about and stamping feet Grin
Sorry, are you offended hun? Of course you are!!

Mumtotwo82 · 09/02/2020 21:42

I don't love the pirate theme in all honesty as I've studied it in history myself. I do think yes they were like terrorist of the day and so where the Vikings and any other kingdom or government who who used force/violence to take something which was most a lot really! Shock I do think that now the kids "dress up pirates" and kids pirate themed TV shows are obviously just about adventure and treasure finding yes sword fights etc. My child did a historical day in school and some went as prirates. My son went as an explorer salior (basically everything but a sword). Im the type of mum that doesn't get toy guns for my boys ( but I know they still role play it and get creative and make 'weapons' I just think a lot of boys do) It's hard getting the balance but I think people are being a bit mean saying your crazy based just on a few posts. I think it be more of a concern violence for entertainment when they are older and I'm the type of mum that wouldn't have certain violent video games in the house, when they are older even. But I know they have to figure it out themselves and if they played it at a friend's house or behind my back it's something that they have to decide on their own conscience but I will teach them why I don't agree with certain things I don't except them to agree and it's up to them when they are older. But I don't have to buy it or have it in the house. I don't think you are wrong for having principles as long as it's within age and balanced all things considering. As most people think you're mad because they presume they think your going to bring up someone violent if you allow it, no I don't think you think that exterme. But there is a love of violence in a lot of entertainment and it's something I have some concern about but more when they are older.

Havingtwinsat40 · 09/02/2020 21:45

Grin this has made my night

BBOA · 09/02/2020 22:17

Iprefergin · 09/02/2020 22:23

Yarrrrrrrr

Here for the comments

Whattheother2catsprefer · 09/02/2020 22:28

How do you spot the Geordie pirate?

He's the one shouting Why-aye captain.

Whattheother2catsprefer · 09/02/2020 22:30

Why do pirates take so long to learn the alphabet?

They spend years on the c.

Petrachat · 09/02/2020 22:31

Well OP, it depends , if they are expecting him to do a Long John Silver , one leg, and live parrot on shoulder, then maybe pass; if not see a shrink tout suite!

BlossomingTulip · 09/02/2020 22:35

It's okay!!! Don't take it too seriously. Kids love pirates , they are just costumes. Send him to the party he will have a lot of fun.

Cheeserton · 09/02/2020 22:39

Nobody's that ridiculous. This thread is nonsense.

Ratherberightthanhappy · 09/02/2020 22:46

OP you are absolutely marvellous. Please tell us about some other things you disapprove of too 🏴‍☠️

ThisIsFine · 09/02/2020 22:48

Oh but there's so much fun to be had with pirates! Searching for buried treasure! Sailing the seven seas... talking like a pirate arrrrr. Don't be a spoilsport. Can't you just let him go and then sit him down for a chat later and tell him however much fun it is being a pirate it's definitely not ok to rape anyone ok?

user1471449295 · 09/02/2020 22:52

Is this a joke thread?

Greatdomestic · 09/02/2020 22:53

Thread of the weekend

ThisIsFine · 09/02/2020 22:55

I bet the op would not even groan and clutch her chest if a child pretended to shoot them.

Bonnetdedeuce · 09/02/2020 22:57

Captain Pugwash and Master Bates wouldn’t put up with this shit
