To refuse to send my child to a pirate party

A nursery friend of my 4 yo DS is having a pirate themed birthday party. I’m planning to decline the invite as I don’t think it’s appropriate for little children, or anyone for that matter, to dress up as a pirate - it’s glorifying and sentimentalising criminal men who raped, robbed and murdered.

FFS, piracy used to carry the death penalty until recently! You wouldn’t let your child go to a Nazi themed party - I can’t see much difference!

I can’t actually decide if your post is a wind up or not.
If this is serious then I think you need to get off your high horse and take a chill pill because otherwise your poor kids going to be missing a lot of social events!
Cowboys wouid be out due to the way they treated native Americans, kings and queens out due to Bloody historical events.
Faries out probably due to the possibility of gender stereotypes.
And Nothing to do with Roald Dahl either as he was anti Semitic. And nothing Enid Blyton cos she was generally racist.
Good luck lol

Thisisnotreallymyname · 09/02/2020 19:13

Thank God you weren’t my Mum !

Gindrinker43 · 09/02/2020 19:16

I wonder if you have too much time on your hands to be thinking about this and should perhaps direct your energy in to someting more useful.

simiisme · 09/02/2020 19:17

Wow!
Is this a spoof? Or is it written by some tabloid journo to see what the response is?

TheBigFatMermaid · 09/02/2020 19:18

I held a Princess and Pirate party for DD and DS when they were little. Two whole classes! I made a pirate ship and a castle out of cardboard boxes. They all had a great time!

You are setting your child up for a lifetime of teasing or even bullying if you go down this batshit route!

Insanelysilver · 09/02/2020 19:20

Wow! As a Jewish person I can’t believe you’re comparing kids dressing up Captain Hook or captain jack Sparrow to them dressing as Nazi’s!

CallmeBadJanet · 09/02/2020 19:21

Probably best not to read any traditional fairy tales either (sleeping beauty, Snow White and the seven dwarves, rumpelstiltskin). Even the Tiger who came to tea is about nazis.

Vynalbob · 09/02/2020 19:22

Oooooh arghhhh mateys dunno what ye problem is.
Seriously, if you are serious that is, it's just about dressing up.
Disney not Doomsday

ElleMac44 · 09/02/2020 19:28

This has to be a windup!!! What about Disney's Pirates in Peter Pan? I have no words.....

Cloglover · 09/02/2020 19:28

You are not unreasonable to think the glorification of pirates is wrong. Like having kids dress up as cowboys and Indians. But you are being unreasonable not sending him to the party. He can go in a football kit or dress up however he wants. You can have a convo with him when he's older about your beliefs but as it stands, he's a 4 year old that will miss out on a party with his friends. I hate Halloween but I'd never stop my kids from celebrating it. They

Buffythesofasitter · 09/02/2020 19:45

Pirate parties are dangerous. Fact. I threw a pirate party for my DS 3rd birthday. As part of the activities I buried about 15 bags worth of chocolate coins in sand pits so the kids could find the buried treasure. I was busy hosting and didn’t realise DS was scoffing all the choc. He came home and threw up all over a newly painted wall and cream carpet. Must have been his urge to pillage as those coins were for everyone... Grin

justuskul · 09/02/2020 19:49

You are being very unreasonable Hmm
