To not want to go to all this hassle to save £5?

Queenundercanvas · 08/02/2020 09:51

I want to make a purchase possibly today, something for one of the dc and it's around £100.

The shop we are buying from I get a discount of 10%. Dhs brother can also get a different 5% discount, these discounts are through our employers and can be used together.

Dhs brother lives a 40 minute drive away, dh has suggested that we buy the item from the store nearest his brothers house, meet his brother there to get the additional 5% off.

I think that this is far more hassle than it's worth. We weren't planning on visiting the brother today so would have to drive 40 minutes out of our way, arrange and wait for a time that's convenient for his dbro, which may even mean delaying the purchase until another day.

Aibu to think this is more hassle than it's worth?

Yes it is

CakeandCustard28 · 08/02/2020 09:53

Wouldn’t you spend the 5 percent on petrol to get there and back though? YANBU.

CupCupGoose · 08/02/2020 09:53

Surely most of that saving will be eaten up by fuel anyway?

Didntwanttochangemyname · 08/02/2020 09:54

I wouldn't bother, the fuel alone cancels out the saving.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/02/2020 09:55

I'm all for saving money and using whatever discounts are available but it's plainly obvious that the cost of fuel for a 1.5 hours round trip is going to come to more than £5, plus the time if you're not making a day of it visiting BIL.

lengthenmylutealphase · 08/02/2020 09:55

As pp said surely you'll use that in fuel.
Different if you were combining it with a visit obviously.

magoria · 08/02/2020 09:56

40 minutes of fuel there and back plus wear & tear to the car before you add in your time. What saving?

ThePants999 · 08/02/2020 09:59

Your time is worth at least minimum wage, so something that costs you 40 minutes of time wouldn't be worth £5 even ignoring the other costs you'd incur.

Wrongintherightway · 08/02/2020 10:01

So, my DH does this all the time but won't actually do any of the running round!

I now ignore him and if he want to save £5 then he can go and waste his time to get it

Ponoka7 · 08/02/2020 10:03

I like the idea of putting a price on your time. So if fuel was £3, you and your DH's time is worth 50p an hour.

Your time is a lot more valuable than that.

Bezalelle · 08/02/2020 10:03

Penny pinching like this is ridiculous.

My dad once spent a fortune on petrol, trialling various routes that would save him a couple of quid on a toll bridge. It's a bit pathetic really.

TokyoSushi · 08/02/2020 10:05

Goodness no, £50 maybe but absolutely not for £5!

kingkuta · 08/02/2020 10:06

Absolutely ridiculous. Unless your dh has suggested it because he wants to see his brother?

Vulpine · 08/02/2020 10:07

Maybe next time he wants an extra pint or a pudding tell him he'd save money if he didn't

alwaysmovingforwards · 08/02/2020 10:09

Put a £/hr on your free time. Them you'll know if it's worth it.

£5 though?!? If it's 40mins away that's 1.5hrs round trip minimum. You'll use maybe £3-4 in petrol. So you've valued your free time at 50-75p/hr... each to their own, that might work for you. I reckon I could move the sofa and find that in loose change fallen down the back..

Chocmallows · 08/02/2020 10:09

I'd probably do it to save £20, but £5 you could save easily on another deal another day. How much do you value your time?

TheDarkPassenger · 08/02/2020 10:10

My car would definitely use that in fuel!

MrsRocket · 08/02/2020 10:11

YANBU, there is no way I would waste time and fuel on a 5% discount, the fuel will probably cost more than he gets off it for you

Longdistance · 08/02/2020 10:11

You’d spend that on fuel. Not worth it IMO.

PlumsGalore · 08/02/2020 10:18

Ridiculous idea from your DH

thecatneuterer · 08/02/2020 10:28

That's utterly ridiculous

babba2014 · 08/02/2020 10:30

Yes not worth it. He can still visit his brother but this is too long winded.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 08/02/2020 10:40

Gonna agree that you'd probably waste most of that saved £5 in petrol! Not worth it at all.

RachelTension · 08/02/2020 10:41

I think you've got your answer OP..

katewhinesalot · 08/02/2020 10:44

I like tui save a bit of money if I can, but even I see that as ridiculous.
