To leave the hob on whilst I go out?

Got to nip out in the next hour to get petrol and pick DP up from work. Probably will take me about an hour or so to pick him up and get back home depending on traffic.

I'm making a chicken rogan josh for tea and I want to leave it slow cooking for as long as possible but I'm worried about leaving it on it's own.

I find when I use tomato based sauces they get hot really fast and simmer so much that they start sticking to the bottom of my pan.

Would you leave it cooking or should I turn it off when I leave the house?

I wouldn’t leave it for an hour, just in case. Could you leave it on low in the oven? I’m not sure there any better though!

Goneroundthetwist · 07/02/2020 15:16

No I wouldn’t, I’d stick it in the oven maybe or the slow cooker. A neighbours kitchen caught fire when they left a pan on the hob!

SidneyP · 07/02/2020 15:16

@skippetyskoo Hadn't considered the oven. I would feel more comfortable leaving it in the oven though rather than on the gas hob

What temp on the oven do you think? Lid on or off?

TheFastandTheCurious · 07/02/2020 15:17

Most definitely not but then I wouldn't cook it on the hob anyway

MissConductUS · 07/02/2020 15:18

No open flames when no one is home.

Do you have a slow cooker? It's a very useful appliance.

NurseButtercup · 07/02/2020 15:18

Please do not leave the hob on and leave the house! What if you get stuck in traffic??

Igmum · 07/02/2020 15:18

Oven yes, hob no. I'd just leave it really low - 140/130. When I'm cooking something that takes all day (really slow cooked lamb or beef) 120 or even lower

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 07/02/2020 15:19

Id just put this in the oven and slow cook it that way.

Or buy a slow cooker

SidneyP · 07/02/2020 15:19

I don't have a slow cooker anymore as it broke Sad

OP posts:
LadyMonicaBaddingham · 07/02/2020 15:21

Yep, definitely stick it in the oven.

Grandmi · 07/02/2020 15:23

Definitely put in oven ...enjoy!

SidneyP · 07/02/2020 15:23

I'll stick in the oven, shall I leave the lid off?

DartmoorChef · 07/02/2020 15:25

It will be fine in the oven on 100 degrees. Covered.

A slow cooker is simply a small oven on low temp.

WaitingForSummerAgain · 07/02/2020 15:25

Lid on

Tuliptulip · 07/02/2020 15:25

I’d leave the lid on - that way it won’t dry out

CorianderLord · 07/02/2020 15:26

This would stress me out too much. Slow cooker or casserole dish in the oven.

SidneyP · 07/02/2020 15:27

According to ASDA website my pan isn't oven safe Sad damn.

puds11 · 07/02/2020 15:29

Jesus do you even need to ask 🤦‍♀️ Don’t be the cautionary tale.

LoudBatPerson · 07/02/2020 15:31

I would put it in a low oven too. The hob is too risky for me.

Brazi103 · 07/02/2020 15:34

I wouldnt do either. you could be much longer than an hour.

BusterGonad · 07/02/2020 15:34

I wouldn't do either! 🙄

lazylinguist · 07/02/2020 15:39

Surely you must have some kind of pot or pan that can go in the oven? Confused

SidneyP · 07/02/2020 15:47

@lazylinguist I have a cheapy Asda stock pot and some stainless steel pans

Does your oven have a slow cooker setting ? I know it sounds like i am trying to teach you to suck eggs but look on the oven knob and see if it has an S on it around about the 100 mark. My friend had the same cooker as me for 6 years and didnt realise the S meant slow cooker
