I’ve always wondered why his career was so badly damaged by what happened at his house.

It was awful that a man died, but he was never found guilty and it was never proved that he was in any way involved - as far as I remember.

He was so popular before and had a really strong career. AIBU to wonder why people turned against him so quickly?

I don’t mean this to be a goady thread, just generally wondering why he was the ‘only’ fall guy for what happened.

I haven’t seen the documentary but I do remember the incident.
At the time I agree the general impression given was that MB had had a party. A man had drowned. MB had fled the scene after being advised to do so by his agent.
The victim may have had sex with a man, and this may have been consensual, and there may have been drugs at the party.
Then nothing seemed to come of it.

I also vaguely remember MB was married and then came out as gay but the story his team put our was that his wife was ok with it and everyone was living happily ever after.

Ginger1982 · 16/02/2020 23:23

I think as well, it happened just 6 months before 9/11 and that obviously swallowed up any other news.

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 05:52

I remember thinking at the time that maybe MB didn't know what happened as it was reported it was a party at his mansion. Didn't know it was eight people at what was a nice house, but no mansion.

Also remember a lot of focus in the press on why Stuart was there and that he must be at least bisexual to have been there.

emilybrontescorsett · 17/02/2020 07:27

Yes look at how female rape victims are treated, the focus is always ‘well why was she there ?’
The same was true here.
It was kind of phased in a “why would a respectable straight man have gone back to a guy man’s house?”
His family insisted he was straight but it was always posed in a ‘perhaps he wanted to come out of the closet like MB had done, taken drugs and then drowned.’
With MB coming second on BB, people obviously bought this version of events.

Roussette · 17/02/2020 08:07

Some people are just plain star struck. I imagine that Stuart was the same, his family and friends said that. I dont imagine it would occur to him that there was anything to worry about.... it would be 'Michael Barrymore has asked me back to a party at his house! Wait till I tell my mates about this next week!'

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 08:13

Some people are just plain star struck.

I guess so. I never like MB's type of humour so never watched his TV shows so have to remind myself that he was to some people a huge star.

I think you also need to remember that Harlow is quite a deprived and fairly insular area where any celeb in the local nightclub would be quite a novelty.

KatherineJaneway · 17/02/2020 11:38

I don't know Harlow at all.

Overandabove1 · 04/03/2020 08:33

He’s on Good Morning Britain at the moment for anyone interested

username108 · 04/03/2020 09:01

He's shifty as hell on this morning

Kannet · 04/03/2020 09:04

He didn't seem at all well.

Overandabove1 · 04/03/2020 09:11

He definitely didn’t come across well. It seemed the solicitor was scared of letting him answer a question on his own

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2020 09:15

He appeared to be heavily medicated.

MoonahStone · 04/03/2020 14:05

Any clips online for today's tv appearance?

aroundtheworldyet · 04/03/2020 14:22

I think he’s spent a lot of time being heavily medicated. Well that’s how it looks anyway!

Whatafustercluck · 04/03/2020 15:24

Missed this thread when it first appeared.

I know someone connected with the Essex police investigation. Barrymore knows exactly what happened. The initial discovery and scene investigation was a massive bungle by the police because it wasn't treated as a crime scene. Really important evidence gone missing. I loved Barrymore back in the day but apparently he's a massive twat.

Feel sorry for Terry Lubbock who clearly isn't well either but has fought and fought for justice. I hope he sees it one day.

Kannet · 04/03/2020 18:10

I was trying to watch with the toddler making a lot of noise. Was the solicitor saying Stuart's death was an accident, I thought it has been proved that it was murder.

endofthelinefinally · 04/03/2020 19:15

It is yet another example of the system of one set of rules for celebrities and another for the rest of us. On a sliding scale of class, money, sex.

How can he say no one knows what happened A man was murdered at his house, one (or more) of them knows exactly how he died.
I believe Michael Barrymore was involved and his constant whinging about his lost career (which was failing before this event) is horrible.

Whyhaveidonethis · 04/03/2020 23:49

He seemed drunk on GMB this morning.

frillseeking · 08/03/2020 12:11

I thought the fact that he said at the end he had never spoken to any of the people there that night since the day it happened was very very suspicious. I know a few of them were stragglers but one was reported to be his lover? And he said he wouldn't recognise any of them if they walked past him in the street. That's when I thought no, it just doesn't add up

KatherineJaneway · 08/03/2020 15:15

How can he sayno one knows what happenedA man was murdered at his house, one (or more) of them knows exactly how he died.

If he didn't play a part, he can't publically be seen to accuse anyone as there is no proof. The Police hugely bungled the investigation and, unless a miracle happens and someone confesses, we will never know what happened to Stuart.

However I think MB is being hugely optimistic that any offers of primetime work will come his way.
