Would you buy a present for your estate agency/mortgage adviser after completion in a house purchase?

Hello all,
We are 2 days away from completing on our first house and I was thinking it would be nice getting something as a gesture for our estate agent and the mortgage adviser ( he helped us without charging us a fee of £300+). They have both been really nice

I am thinking something along the lines of a nice bottle of wine and chocolates..

What are your thoughts?

Yes, if they ve gone the extra mile. Certainly.

Dongdingdong · 04/02/2020 16:26

Definitely not. I'm paying them enough as it is!

dontgobaconmyheart · 04/02/2020 16:33

If you think they've actually gone above and beyond then sure- not necessary though. I think EA's in particular have a habit of selling you everything they do as though you were special and they've gone out of there way when really they've just performed their job keenly because they want commission. Both financially benefit from you regardless if you used them.

Our conveyancing solicitor was brilliant, no idea if she went above and beyond rather than just did her job well and was conscientious but we wrote a brief note of thanks communicating that it had not gone unnoticed and that we would use her again should the need arise. Also made a point to leave glowing reviews online and to her company.

As an aside -and I sound a right grump I'm not sure I'd ever send wine or chocolate. Neither DP or I drink and I can't eat gluten (coeliac) so we have scores of both we are forever palming off that are unwanted. You'd be surprised how few takers there are for cheap wine when you're trying to shift it from your kitchen even when it's free. A card is sufficient.

We did. The main estate agent guy, who really went for it marketing, he was great, instantly felt I could trust him and his team and they didn't disappoint. The other estate agent that was in charge of negotiation and got the buyer up to where we needed to be. The after sales lady that was so on the ball and kept her foot up the solicitors bum to make sure everything was done.

Great team and we were very happy with them. I got them each a card and put £50 in each and said thanks have a beer on us.

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/02/2020 16:34

Yes, I would and have. Good agents are as rare as hens teeth in my experience and I think good service should be rewarded, even if it's just a thank you card.

NoNoAndDefinateNo · 04/02/2020 16:36

Oh should say that previous to them we had had 2 terrible estate agents, that did nothing, just wanted another house on their books, so we really appreciated the good ones.

Urkiddingright · 04/02/2020 16:41

Our gift was the money they received for doing their job.

amaryl · 04/02/2020 16:49

I wanted to kill my estate agent he caused so much trouble. So, no.
But if they’d been helpful then I see no reason why not.

eurochick · 04/02/2020 17:06

EAs usually get paid a huge amount for doing relatively little, so I wouldn't be inclined to send anything unless they had really gone the extra mile. If I was particularly impressed with a broker or solicitor I might, but I never have been!

JacquesHammer · 04/02/2020 17:17

Yes if you feel they've done a great job for you, although I would agree that an online review would be appreciated in addition.

JacquesHammer · 04/02/2020 17:18

Just to add its a number of years since I gave up conveyancing. I still have each and every thank you card I received Smile

Iusedtobeapartygirl · 04/02/2020 17:23

I took some biscuits in for the 2 ladies who managed the house I let out when I stopped being a landlord. I had had a business relationship with them for a few years so wanted to thank them.

lanthanum · 04/02/2020 17:45

I know of one case where a chain ground to a halt, and one of the people in the chain did such a good job of hassling the various solicitors and so on to get things moving that the estate agent bought them a present.

Pipandmum · 04/02/2020 17:47

Your mortgage advisor got a commission.
Nothing but a nice thank you card would be appreciated by the agents - I always see a few on display.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 04/02/2020 17:50

I did! Ours was complicated and they both went above and beyond to make sure we got the house. I brought both the EA and MA a bottle of champagne.

FenellaVelour · 04/02/2020 17:55

I got a box of chocs for our mortgage broker and our conveyancer, nothing too expensive.

ShyTown · 04/02/2020 17:56

Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Our broker in the US sent us a cookbook and a bottle of wine when we moved into our new place. But no I wouldn’t dream of buying them a gift, they’re doing their job and getting paid commission for it!

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 04/02/2020 17:56

I didn't buy ours anything or send flowers but I wrote an email to her line manager to pass on the positive experience we had.

HaudMaDug · 04/02/2020 18:00

I'd wait to make sure until after your completion. It may happen in 2 days but often completion day is the day the whole thing falls to pieces. So wait and see how you feel about your EA after you exchange.

Beebumble2 · 04/02/2020 18:03

No. Once ours got their £ via the solicitor, we never heard another thing, let alone a thank you.
I’ve never spent so much and not been thanked!

Beebumble2 · 04/02/2020 18:04

£* x4, stars won’t show!

Robstersgirl · 04/02/2020 18:07

My friend is an estate agent and gets loads of gifts!
