Would you buy a present for your estate agency/mortgage adviser after completion in a house purchase?

Hello all,
We are 2 days away from completing on our first house and I was thinking it would be nice getting something as a gesture for our estate agent and the mortgage adviser ( he helped us without charging us a fee of £300+). They have both been really nice

I am thinking something along the lines of a nice bottle of wine and chocolates..

What are your thoughts?

I didn’t, but if they’ve gone above and beyond and you appreciate their work, I’m sure they’ll be happy!

ParkerKnoll · 04/02/2020 15:27

Happy to receive a little gift, I mean!

AryaStarkWolf · 04/02/2020 15:28

I mean it's their job so i wouldn't say it's necessary but if you feel they went above and beyond for you then it would be a nice gesture

8by8 · 04/02/2020 15:31

Tbh they’d probably prefer good online reviews - post reviews on google reviews and anywhere else you find, them send them cards saying thank you and telling them you’ve done the reviews.

Waterandlemonjuice · 04/02/2020 15:32

I think it’s a nice thing to do, who wouldn’t like a bottle of wine or chocolate

Elouera · 04/02/2020 15:32

As another poster said, if they went above and beyond, then yes. I have often given a small token (usually chocolates) as a thankyou to other professionals (nurse, osteopath, lady that helped with visa etc).

We are going through a mortgage broker, and I'd definitely give her a bottle wine and chocs. The way I'm currently feeling about real estate agents though (and being let down, not called back, ignored etc etc), there is no way I'd give them anyways. If you are happy, then a small token can be very much appreciated.

MrsSpenserGregson · 04/02/2020 15:33

The mortgage adviser will have received a proc(uration) fee from your mortgage lender, amounting to hundreds if not thousands of pounds, so there's really no need for you to bother Wink. They'd probably appreciate a good online review on TrustPilot or wherever else they're registered though.

Alsoco · 04/02/2020 15:33

It does happen quite regularly. Don’t forget your solicitor too if they did a good job, we like flowers! 😂

Papoy · 04/02/2020 15:39

It is their job but this sort of things are personal services so if you feel like it, go for it, especially since they saved you a bit of cash.

I am sure they will be delighted 🥰

catmumof1 · 04/02/2020 15:40

We gave them a card and dropped a box of biscuits in the EA office as they all chipped in a bit to help with our sale and purchase and the mortgage broker worked out of their office as well. The process with them was a bit of a nightmare though so we didn't leave them any online reviews. And they undervalued my house so we potentially lost out on around £20k.
We sent the solicitors some flowers as they did a really good job for us (and they told me in a meeting that they never get through the chocolates or biscuits).

NRPDad · 04/02/2020 15:46

Nope, they get more than enough fees to compensate them! Mortgage advisor firm got ~£700 from HSBC according to my mortgage offer. Estate agents presumably got 1% or so from the seller and did nothing to help the sale.

Newfloorlamp · 04/02/2020 15:47

We sent our mortgage broker a £20 Amazon gift voucher in a thank you card for going above and beyond with helping us buy our first place. The solicitor got a thanks very much email and we were so happy to never contact the horrible estate agent again!

NeverTwerkNaked · 04/02/2020 15:50

We bought flowers for our estate agent, they were amazing in getting our sale through.

74NewStreet · 04/02/2020 15:51

Wouldn’t enter my head to do this.

Sunflower20 · 04/02/2020 16:02

No I wouldn't.

LesLavandes · 04/02/2020 16:04

My estate agent did a f'ing terrible job. So nope

ponygirlcurtis · 04/02/2020 16:05

I have bought and sold houses many many times and I have only done it once, because I felt the mortgage broker really went above and beyond to find me a mortgage (I was self-employed on a low income but had a decent deposit). Without her efforts I wouldn't have the lovely home I am currently lounging in. So I sent her some chocs and a card, and wrote a glowing review/recommendation for her. I think she really appreciated it. But I wouldn't do it as a matter of course.

steff13 · 04/02/2020 16:06

No. Our real estate agent bought us a housewarming present, though.

maggiecate · 04/02/2020 16:10

If you want to do it go ahead - it’s lovely when you work in a customer facing role and someone goes out of their way to show their appreciation.

AlandAnna · 04/02/2020 16:11

Yes, some estate agents are awful and so anything above that deserves a gift 😂
We bought our solicitors some posh biscuits and a thank you card because they kept us sane.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 04/02/2020 16:14

Not my solicitor, who has been dreadful, but the property manager who has been representing the vendor has been absolutely brilliant. He has no financial interest in the property being sold - in fact, as he managed the property when it was rented, he’s actually losing a customer. But he’s been so so patient with me, helpful and supportive so will definitely be getting him something.

I actually posted in a chat a few days ago because I wasn’t sure what to get him. Thinking a bottle of scotch?

NiteFlights · 04/02/2020 16:15

Once, when the estate agent did a great job for us during a long and tricky purchase. He was a lovely guy, always patient, helpful, had time for us and deserved something at the end of it all! I think we got our solicitor something that time too. If you are still happy with them at the end of what can be a gruelling process then why not.

newyearsresolution2010 · 04/02/2020 16:16

Ex-estate agent here!

The EA will get commission based on the sale. The mortgage advisor will get commission on the mortgage.

But, I used to love getting a 'thank you' card and bottle of wine/box of chocs when I handed over the keys on completion!
I once got 12 bottles of expensive champagne, gave one to each of my colleagues to then get told by one 'I don't like champagne, I'll give it to my friend'...... Shock

But anyway, if they did a good job then give a card and little gift. ☺

Threefaries · 04/02/2020 16:18

I had a fabulous mortgage advisor who went that’s extra mile. After purchasing my present house I bought her a gift. She was absolutely delighted with it and said that it made her day.

SapphosRock · 04/02/2020 16:23

Yes we had a great estate agent and got them a bottle of champagne on completion
