Is this sort of thing common in London taxis?

I've name changed for this because it is outing. We got into a cab today in Covent Garden. I asked the driver if he could take us to King's Cross, he didn't answer me. I asked him if he had heard me okay. I'm mentioning this because I thought he was miserable and rude at the start of the journey.

Up to now I've always been really lucky with the London cabs I've got into. The driver has been unfailingly polite and always got me where I needed to be in good time. I think it's quite a skill. I use them on trips to London about two or three times a year. I tried Uber and found them utter rubbish. I've never had the incident that happened today occur before.

The driver drove up Upper Woburn Place, you can't turn right onto Euston Road, you have to loop round. But he was in the left hand lane, as if to go straight ahead. Just after crossing Euston Road he swerved in front of the car behind as if he had forgotten where he needed to be (to enable him to turn right and back onto Euston Road). The driver behind toots his horn as if to say "you could have given me a bit of warning before you cut in front of me". Cab driver then refused to move forward, even though the traffic was moving forward; this was to piss off the driver behind for tooting at him. I was checking my phone for a few seconds then I looked up when the driver from behind pulls up on our cab driver's left. Cab driver winds his window down and the guy from behind said "what you doing man?" He wasn't too crazy or aggressive .. obviously just wanting to let the cab driver know he was out of order. The cab driver WAS aggressive and really sarcastic. One of the things he said to the driver was "Aw, what you gona do, take it to the African Embassy?". The cab driver looked and spoke as if he was from India, or perhaps the Middle East or North Africa (I didn't get a really good look at him). The other driver was black. The other driver did not respond, he just looked sad, really. I think, but I don't know, that the cab driver was taunting the other driver with a racist jibe. It was all pretty unpleasant. My kids were just looking into their lap, wondering how it was going to end. The whole business took about 5 or 6 minutes, and we were just sitting in the back of the cab wondering how long it would go on for, whether we should just get out there and then whilst the cab was stationary and the shouting was going on (although that would have been dangerous, obviously) or whether we should tell him to get a move on. As it happened it did cost us the train we had booked, we were cutting it fine for time.

It was all just a bit shit really .. I thought London cab drivers had to work hard to get and keep their licence, and had a fairly good reputation.

Is this sort of thing a common occurrence now and I'm being naive, or should it not have happened?

I’ve rang them and reported it.
I’m glad I posted because it did galvanise me to action.
I hope his license is revoked.

I’m glad you reported it OP. I would have done the same.

I was once in a taxi when the driver, who was Asian, was racially abused. I was really upset about it. The driver said it happens all the time. It really made me re-think many of my presumptions about racism not being a big problem.

Apologies if someone has already posted this (haven't RTFT) but your complaint should be made to the Public Carriage Office, who licence the cabbies
pcolicencehq.co.uk/contact/

I'm a Londoner and I would definitely make a complaint in the circumstances you experienced. Most cabbies are great but you do get a few who are like this.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 03/02/2020 13:34

Sorry - see you have already reported.

TheGreyInThisCity · 03/02/2020 13:51

Glad you’ve reported it OP!

Lightsabre · 03/02/2020 14:18

Hope he didn't charge you for the time he stopped the traffic?
My chatty dh doesn't use black taxi's very often but when he does, invariably the conversation seems to turn to race and it's often unpleasant. Several times he's terminated his journey early.

AsleepAllDay · 03/02/2020 14:23

Report him. It's not usual for London

FizzyIce · 03/02/2020 14:27

No you’re not out of touch ,the majority of London cabbies are lovely ,friendly people .
Report this nasty bastard ASAP

FizzyIce · 03/02/2020 14:29

Glad you reported it

PickleMyPepper · 03/02/2020 14:44

Please don't report to the PCO. Your complaints should go through TfL.

ScarlettBlaize · 03/02/2020 14:48

No one who was pushed for time would do that journey by taxi.

LEELULUMPKIN · 03/02/2020 15:04

No it's not usual behaviour. My DS is severely disabled and we have to get a black cab for even the shortest distances as the tube is just a no no. All the ones I have had have been brilliant.

We use them about 4 times a year and on one occasion the guy turned his meter off and went out of his way to show DS all the lights at Winter Wonderland. It was a lovely thought.

I wrote to TFL about that, so many people don't when service is great just as you should contact them for this.

Welcome to post Brexit Britain.

Nanny0gg · 03/02/2020 16:57

OFGS.

Nothing to do with bloody Brexit!

Vulpine · 03/02/2020 17:02

I generally prefer uber drivers to black cab drivers

TriangularRatbag · 03/02/2020 17:06

I would highly recommend Uber. I avoid black cabs like the plague. If Uber cost double the fare I would still use it. It's a far superior service.

PickleMyPepper · 03/02/2020 17:12

Those saying they prefer Uber, does the fact they were regarded as not being fit and proper to hold a licence in November of last year not bother you?

FloraGreysteel · 04/02/2020 06:51

I get black cabs regularly and this isn't normal. Report him.

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 06:59

Also baffled as to why you'd get a cab between Covent garden and king's cross. You're obviously not a Londoner!

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 07:00

I really can't see how Uber is less safe than a black cab.

Once you leave a cab unless you be noted down the details, it is near impossible to trace your driver without accessing public data like CCTV..

Findumdum1 · 04/02/2020 07:03

Avoid black cabs. Get Uber or tube. Is what most Londoners would do.

I've used Ubers all over the world and find them much, much better than black cabs or minicabs. I've never had a problem and couldn't give a toss about the licencing thing in London. Most uber drivers I speak to are very happy with the model. I hope they get their licence back in London.

SillyMoomin · 04/02/2020 07:03

@GEEpEe well seeing as the op has stated many times SHE’S NOT FROM LONDON, what an astounding observation Hmm

I’m from London. And I wouldn’t dream of mocking someone who didn’t know their way around. I don’t know my way around Cardiff and would probably take a cab for a journey that maybe only took 5 mins to walk.

GEEpEe · 04/02/2020 07:11

Citymapper? Would have told you it was an illogical idea.

longwayoff · 04/02/2020 07:21

Yes. Very common. Be thankful he wasn't yattering on about Brexit.

Soffy · 04/02/2020 07:22

Given you have used black cabs before without this issue you would know its not normal.
