WTF happened to my honey?!?!

frostedviolets · 02/02/2020 17:01

AIBU to still eat it?!

It started out very pale cream colour, creamed, thick and the top has suddenly transformed into dark runny honey?!?!

I thought only runny went crystallised, not the other way round..?

Has it spoiled?

I thought honey lasted practically forever

WTF happened to my honey?!?!

There's a lot of crystallisation talk here, I have to clarify, this is NOT runny honey that has crystalized.

It's the opposite.

It's honey that started out thick, pale, 'crystalized' and has started to go runny instead.

I love the texture of crystallised honey... which is irrelevant for the OP's issue, I agree.

woodencoffeetable · 02/02/2020 17:53

still fine.
that happens to creamy honey if the temperatures change a lot.

HandInHandIsTheOnlyWayToLand · 02/02/2020 17:55

It’s probably got slightly warm - this is what crystallised honey does if you warm it to make it runny honey. It could also be that you’ve got two types of honey in there and it’s separated. Entirely likely unless you got it from a local beekeeper. However it will be fine to eat!Smile

meandmylot · 02/02/2020 17:56

It probably warmed up hence the top turned to liquid. I'd turn it all to liquid to remix the sugars and then let it crystallise again keeping it at a consistent temperature in storage.

Molly2017 · 02/02/2020 17:58

I’d eat it

GinaCarbonara · 02/02/2020 17:59

@Dwayna where can you find local honey if you wanted to buy some instead of the supermarket stuff?

hazandduck · 02/02/2020 18:01

Op it still won’t matter. Isn’t honey the only food that never spoils? My parents kept bees and theirs was that thicker creamy texture. I ate it whatever form. It won’t make you sick. Unless it has had something else to contaminate it (like you’ve put a buttery knife in there etc.)

Dwayna · 02/02/2020 18:04

@GinaCarbonara farm shops and farmers markets are probably your best bet. You could also try googling local honey in your area as many beekeepers sell their honey online.

TeeBee · 02/02/2020 18:07

Rowse is not a reputable brand. It's terrible; most supermarket honey is. Buy local from a bee keeper. A lot of local grocers/butchers will sell decent honey.

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 02/02/2020 18:13

Honey changes depending on temperature and other things, it can go from crystallised to smooth and vice versa.

It's ok.

Alez · 02/02/2020 18:19

Organic honey does this - it's because they don't put the extra stuff in that helps preserve its consistency. It's totally fine to eat.

Oh.
Sad

I bought a gorgeous local honey once from my local summer fete.
It was fantastic and really cheap for a massive jar.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to track it down since.
So I bought Rose thinking it was a well known and presumably reputable and good brand.

Tkmaxx often has a large selection of honey's on offer so you can try some decent ones and see what you like without spending a fortune!

Excited101 · 03/02/2020 00:38

Anything that is at blend of EU and non EU honey is crap- just sugar syrup really. Farm shops are your best bet.

Cslyne · 16/07/2021 10:39

Rowed is not raw honey, and has been processed. Pure, raw honey is never blended and the water content is 18%. Pure honey ALWAYS crystallises and will only return to being runny if gently warmed. Buy it from a local beekeeper when you will have the many health benefits of raw honey straight from the bees

ahoyshipmates · 16/07/2021 10:43

I don't like honey.

BattineBlooms · 16/07/2021 10:48

@onalongsabbatical

It's probably a blend that's separated. Stand it in hot water, give it a stir, it's fine!
Yes, this. Totally fine.
CounsellorTroi · 16/07/2021 10:58

Honey kills bacteria and lasts forever. Some was found in an. Egyptian tomb and was still edible. Agree about single location honey. Welsh honey is lovely but expensive.

JustAnotherUserinParadise · 16/07/2021 11:23

You shouldn't really microwave honey if you're a purist... apparently it kills the enzymes! Stand it in warm water.
(source: parents kept bees, but I always microwaved it lol)

I think op has probably finished the honey by now, given this is a ZOMBIE THREAD

TheTallOakTrees · 16/07/2021 11:33

Honey is the ONLY food that doesn't go off. - google and check if you don't believe me - it will be fine - it's merely crystallised

Eat and enjoy

4PawsGood · 16/07/2021 11:36

Just stir it and eat it.

giletrouge · 16/07/2021 11:42

Zombie thread - shocked to see my old name! Grin
