"So hungry I could eat a horse" every day, all day. A.i.b.u

My appetite has quadrupled in size in the last 6 months. I don't think it's all in my mind. I am eating three good, nutritious meals plus healthy snacks. I've been drinking two litres of water of late. My weight has gone up by one stone. I feel like I'm Hank Marvin starving and becoming obsessed with food. I mean genuine, raw hunger.

This morning I have had sausage bacon scrambled egg tomatoes, , 2 toast, fruit, tea. 2 hrs later I could eat the same again. I'm either going to end up huge or normal weight and starved alive. A.i.b.u go think I'm starving all the time?

How is your sleep? Poor sleep can make you hungry.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 02/02/2020 14:39

Yes, tiredness does this to me

Or pregnancy Grin

Or tapeworm Shock

Villanomme · 02/02/2020 14:42

Have you had your thyroid checked?

When mine goes on the blink again I could eat a horse too.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/02/2020 14:44

Are you run down? Tired? Bored? I often feel like this when winter begins my body needs extra fat.

Choclips · 02/02/2020 14:58

Not possible pregnancy, and haven't noticed worms, though I'm so hungry I might take a tablet in desperation.

Had a hysterectomy and stopped smoking 6 months ago. Put on 1.5 stone. Adjusted diet for that , weight not budging yet never had a problem with that system before. Bare hunger! I could scoff everything in sight if let off the leash so to speak!

That sounds quite a noticeable jump in terms of food and hunger to me. I’d speak to your doctor about some blood tests to see if there is anything underlying.

timetest · 02/02/2020 15:02

I thought thyroid too. Get your blood tested.

Sparrowlegs248 · 02/02/2020 15:04

I have underactive thyroid and had no idea increased appetite was part of it. I'm really struggling with it. Is it worth going back to the GP? They seem pretty dismissive of it tbh.

dottiedodah · 02/02/2020 15:28

Maybe since stopping smoking ,Appetite has increased? Maybe check all OK with Doctor? .Weather is colder now for sure. Maybe porridge would be more filling ? Also do you have any supper at all ? I have a small sandwich /cereal / before bed at night and find I sleep better .(Just a couple of slices of wholemeal bread /Marmite /Ham/cheese spread ) an some milk as well .Also re snacks during the day maybe some unsalted Nuts /Bananas /Raisins with a glass of SS milk?.Also home made soup is quite easy to make and is fairly filling .Bovril is also very satisfying as a drink as well .lots of protein !

Villanomme · 02/02/2020 15:29

Nottalotta you should be having a yearly blood test to see how your thyroid is functioning and whether you need a dose adjustment either up or down.

ItsLegalTender · 02/02/2020 15:34

Mirtazapine can make you really hungry if you're on that?

HavelockVetinari · 02/02/2020 15:40

Sounds like either the hysterectomy, stopping smoking or a combination of the two has affected your appetite. Quite common for both unfortunately. Are you on HRT? That can help.

Besidesthepoint · 02/02/2020 15:45

Smoking is a very well known hunger suppressor, so could be that.

Topseyt · 02/02/2020 15:46

Get your thyroid checked. I was like this when mine was overactive, releasing high levels of thyroxine as it drives your metabolism.

I literally couldn't be filled.

AdoraBell · 02/02/2020 15:49

Agree you should see your GP and get some tests.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/02/2020 16:26

Had a hysterectomy and stopped smoking 6 months ago Giving your update I'd say it is normal. You are tasting food for the first time properly, your body is healing.
Go with it for now, make healthy meal choices let your body heal then increase your fitness when your feel physically better. Personally I think it takes over a year to go full circle from a smoking addiction, never mind a hysterectomy too.

Cherrysoup · 02/02/2020 16:37

There is an illness that causes permanent hunger, I watched a documentary on it, sorry, can’t remember the name of it. First thing I’d do is worm yourself.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 02/02/2020 16:52

Stopping smoking makes people put on weight Sad as smoking suppresses hunger

ragged · 02/02/2020 17:40

Smoking is an appetite suppressant. You've removed that, so rebalancing.

kelper · 02/02/2020 17:45

@Cherrysoup I think thats Prader-willi syndrome, although hopefully someone with more knowledge might come a long to confirm or deny.

Spidey66 · 02/02/2020 17:47

@Nottalotta
An underactive thyroid won't increase your appetite, but an overactive one will.

However, it usually makes you lose weight, not put it on. I say usually, but my husband was diagnosed with it by Moorfields because he had thyroid eye disease and one eye was bulging, which is another symptom of an overactive thyroid. He certainly didn't lose weight!

catlady3 · 02/02/2020 17:48

Have you changed your exercise routine? When I started lifting weights the hunger was epic.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/02/2020 18:25

Dsis has hashimoto's disease it was only discovered when she gave up smoking it attacks her thyroid, nicotine repressed the symptoms. She has terrible issues with constant hunger. I'd have a blood test.

HavelockVetinari · 02/02/2020 18:36

Prader-willi syndrome is genetic and apparent from very early childhood, it definitely isn't that!

HavelockVetinari · 02/02/2020 18:38

I meant to ask, did you have one or both ovaries removed at the same time as your hysterectomy? That can and does generally result in weight gain.
