"So hungry I could eat a horse" every day, all day. A.i.b.u

My appetite has quadrupled in size in the last 6 months. I don't think it's all in my mind. I am eating three good, nutritious meals plus healthy snacks. I've been drinking two litres of water of late. My weight has gone up by one stone. I feel like I'm Hank Marvin starving and becoming obsessed with food. I mean genuine, raw hunger.

This morning I have had sausage bacon scrambled egg tomatoes, , 2 toast, fruit, tea. 2 hrs later I could eat the same again. I'm either going to end up huge or normal weight and starved alive. A.i.b.u go think I'm starving all the time?

My ovaries were left. My bloods were tested for thyroid a month ago and came back normal.

Whilst part of me feels greedy, it's definitely a physical hunger that I've not felt before, yes, epic. I could get over this if it were not everyday. It's been everyday since July. To get an appointment with doc these days, we have to have an initial call back to assess if you need appointment in first instance. I will feel a bit of a fool saying I feel hungry all the time .

Is hunger a symptom of diabetes?

My guess would be it's related to the hysterectomy. My appetite is affected massively by hormones.

BlueHarry · 02/02/2020 19:03

Especially as you've had your thyroid checked recently

Ponoka7 · 02/02/2020 19:07

I'd also say it could be connected to the hysterectomy.

Start to fill up on protein and less carbs.

Is hunger a symptom of diabetes?

I was just coming on to say get checked for diabetes. Before I was diagnosed (Apart from weeing for England.) I would eat a large bowl of cereal for breakfast and within an hour my stomach would be audibly rumbling from hunger. I hope it's not, but I'd say get your bloods checked just to rule it out.

Oestradiol production is affected by a hysterectomy (and by menopause/peri-menopause) - oestradiol is an antagonist of ghrelin, which stimulates appetite. In plain English, the reduction in certain hormones caused by your hysterectomy may have led to your body overreacting to the hormone that stimulates hunger. Your brain might balance it all on its own given time, but in the interim weight gain/hunger is to be expected.

Stopping smoking will have exacerbated the effects, although it's still the best thing you could have possibly done for your health so bloody well done.

Can you go back to your GP, explain you're having issues with appetite and ask if they can help?

In the meantime, avoid sugar as this spikes ghrelin levels, and eat plenty of protein. Something like Atkins/low carb is actually perfect for you at the moment, as you're trying to train your brain out of overreacting to ghrelin.

Yes definitely get everything checked, diabetes etc.

However, assuming you increased what you were eating when you stopped smoking (as most people do don't they?) then the more you eat, the bigger your appetite. Larger volumes of food stretch your stomach. I always find after my stomach has been stretched for a temporary period eg over Christmas, when I go back to "normal" eating, I'm genuinely starving and it takes me a while to get back to not being starving. As you say it's proper physical hunger, stomach grumbling and everything. The stomach gets used to eating more. To get it back to "normal" you'll have to endure a short time of actual hunger (which is hard I know!) and just ignore it, sticking to 3 meals and healthy snacks only if you have to.

gnushoes · 02/02/2020 21:40

Do you still have your ovaries? (Though a hysterectomy can make them pack up anyway). Are you on HRT if not? Menopause would be my suggestion.

Choclips · 02/02/2020 21:51

I had slashed the amount of sugar and carbs over the last three weeks in a conscious effort to cut that cycle of sugar spikes. I'd looked to raising good fats but can't get my head to trust I won't add weight. I probably thought I had enough protein but may not have. If only there was a magic pill to surpress my beast of an appetite!
