To lie about GCSE grade to get on to course?

hellohh · 01/02/2020 08:37

I have GCSE maths at grade C and want to re-do maths to get on to a grad scheme. I can't afford to pay for a course at the moment.

I know you can get funding if you don't have a maths GCSE at grade C. So I was wondering if colleges check if you've already done GCSE and what grade you got.

Btw, my maths is rusty so I would love do to it again.

Check on line? Really? Where is this GCSE data base?

I'm in Scotland and the SQA would have this information about people going back years. I can log in and see everything I did in the early 1990's.

RhymingRabbit3 · 01/02/2020 09:08

You could just get a textbook and teach yourself - it would only cost you the price of the textbook and you would have to pay to sit the exam at a local centre. There are lots of online resources that you can use.

However this will probably be more difficult and take longer than doing a course - it takes a lot of self discipline to stick at it. But it is possible.

Yep, my Son started a grad scheme (with a well known bank in London) last year, and they asked to see everything bar the label in the back of his pants!
They really are aware that people may be trying to blag shortcomings in their qualifications - please re-take your Maths (I say this with as someone who only just scraped it themselves) this could be really embarassing for all parties.

FamilyOfAliens · 01/02/2020 09:09

As PP have said, if the course is over-subscribed, you could be taking the place of someone who is eligible, while you are not.

Ask if you’d be happy to do that.

FizzyPink · 01/02/2020 09:12

I’m not saying you should lie but I work in London and have had multiple professional roles with global organisations and not once have I even been asked for a reference never mind checking my exam results. I genuinely wouldn’t know where any of my certificates are if they did.

cuckooken · 01/02/2020 09:13

@CookieSue222

OP is not suggesting she lies to get onto the course. OP is suggesting she retakes the maths for free by lying about the fact that she already has it at a grade C, which means she is not eligible to retake it for feee.

borntobequiet · 01/02/2020 09:14

Unfortunately Functional Maths is unlikely to be helpful to you in these circumstances, and you wouldn’t get funded for it anyway.
GCSE Bitesize is however free for anyone to use. Work through these resources and then get a tutor for a few sessions to go over things you find difficult and to focus on revision. You can download past papers from exam board websites. Enquire at local schools/ colleges about being entered for the exam as an external candidate. You should be able to sort this by May/June if you put in the work.
Apply for the grad scheme anyway, telling them what you are doing. They may well offer you a conditional place.

AJPTaylor · 01/02/2020 09:16

Tbh with online resources and the internet it would not be hard to teach yourself. Just enter for the exam. I taught myself maths o level 30 years ago after failing it at School and passed. Now with a million and one ways of getting any tricky bits explained you should be fine.

RantyAnty · 01/02/2020 09:17

Study and retake it. Do what you need to do. Everyone else does.

Brazi103 · 01/02/2020 09:18

Why are you even thinking along these lines. You want to deliberately lie in order to gain something - it's not a good characteristic trait. Instead of asking about lying, you could have asked if you could redo the course cheaper and how to go about that.

Ylvamoon · 01/02/2020 09:19

Don't lie. I am on a course (Apprenticeship through work) - they wanted proof of all previous qualifications and grades.
And quite right so.

BahHumbygge · 01/02/2020 09:21

Cgp revision guides are meant to be good, eg. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1782949593/?tag=mumsnetforu03-21 . Plus Khan Academy for all levels of maths, and tons of videos on Youtube as well. Get yourself booked in as an external candidate (not sure when the deadline is) and work through the revision guides/worksheets.

FamilyOfAliens · 01/02/2020 09:22

OP is not suggesting she lies to get onto the course.

The title of this thread is “To lie about GCSE grade to get on to course?”.

Confused
CookieSue222 · 01/02/2020 09:23

Apologies Op, misunderstood that PP were talking bout the re-take college, not the grad scheme. Sorry, but I think the same will apply and that you will have to pay to re-take to attain a higher grade in order to access the grad scheme. Funding is for people who need to achieve a basic maths qualification.

WhatKatyDidNot · 01/02/2020 09:23

YABU. And as PP have said, they'll require proof.

Apply for the grad scheme anyway, telling them what you are doing. They may well offer you a conditional place.

I second this. Nothing ventured, nothing gained - and it marks you out as both honest and committed.

echt · 01/02/2020 09:23

OP is not suggesting she lies to get onto the course. OP is suggesting she retakes the maths for free by lying about the fact that she already has it at a grade C, which means she is not eligible to retake it for feee

The OP for titles her thread to saying she wants to cheat and the body of the thread says something else. So she is BVVU all round.

LolaSmiles · 01/02/2020 09:23

You cant retake A*-G GCSEs in maths anymore. The new specifications are 9-1.
Also, the content is more difficult than the old specification too so there's new material from the course you won't have studied at school.

There's no good lying about it. If you want to resit then you'll need to pay, and I'd contact the graduate scheme to ask if they'd accept you subject to GCSE resit. Be prepared that they may say they'll accept a resit, but you need to have the grade before you apply.

1forsorrow · 01/02/2020 09:25

I think alot of people seem to have misunderstood the question, the OP wasn't suggesting she is going to lie to the grad scheme about her maths result, she is suggesting saying to a college she doesn't have a maths GCSE so she can do one free. Just to be clear you can't produce a I don't have maths GCSE certificate because there is no such thing.

tealandseagreen · 01/02/2020 09:25

I recently had to take a pic of my certificate and send it though to the course assessment people.

ManonBlackbeak · 01/02/2020 09:26

Can you do an Access Course instead.”?

stayathomegardener · 01/02/2020 09:32

Jumping on board here, I'd love to do a degree in garden design but would never resist maths.

Would there be any public records still held? I'm 51.

I personally would feel quite comfortable photoshopping a C pass. 🤷‍♀️

Witchend · 01/02/2020 09:33

I might be wrong, but if you need a B+ and go on a course for people who are haven't a C, then you may find it's aimed at foundation level grades. Foundation level are 1-5, and you'd need a 6+ for what you want.

HerstoryVsHistory · 01/02/2020 09:33

They check on the national data base when you actually enrol

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 01/02/2020 09:33

Either self study for it or work more hours to pay for a course. Very entitled to expect it paid for.
