To ask how often you need to wash yourself to be clean?

I have a shower every other day but wouldn't admit that publicly because fear I would be shamed for being dirty. When my mum was growing up it was standard to have a bath once a week, no shame attached at all to that. Indeed it's probably only been fairly recently there has been an expectation of a daily/twice daily shower.

When did social attitudes start to change on what 'dirty' meant and what do you do?

I shower or bath once a week, I have a stand up wash every day. I will shower if I'm more active.

SinglePringle · 02/02/2020 18:43

😆@Jack80 once a week?! Really???

Binting · 02/02/2020 18:47

Also a child of the 60’s & 70’s. We had a bath once a week, I remember a bath in the kitchen covered with a Formica type top. I also remember going to a public bathhouse which had baths in cubicles and a woman who provided soap and towels. I started showering in the 80’s. I cannot bear having baths now, sitting in all that water. I shower every day, but when my MH is poor and I hide away from the world I can realise I haven’t showered for a few days. I love showers but loathe getting dried so it is a chore mostly. I get very itchy all over once I get out of a bath or shower, always have, it goes after I dry myself though.

Lolwhat · 02/02/2020 18:47

Daily, sometimes twice a day

BackBoiler · 02/02/2020 18:50

I shower every morning, 2/3 mins. Seems more convenient than a sink. Every evening I have a bath or shower - shower on hair washing day (twice a week as I have very curly hair and it goes shit it I wash too often!!) Sometimes I skip the nightly one (usually when I end up drinking after work and then I cloth off and sleep) Today though will be three showers...had one on getting up, but had to have another as me and my dad did some unexpected renovation work and I will shower to wash my hair for work tomorrow 😂

BackBoiler · 02/02/2020 18:53

@Jack80 I find a 1 min shower more effective than a strip wash

ulvie · 02/02/2020 19:01

I do the equivalent of a strip wash every morning, but in the shower. It’s a very quick shower but I feel cleaner if the water I’m using to wash with, runs away after I’ve used it. Hair washed every 3 days - Dry, curly hair.

Menstrual bold and semen stink, please tell me that those of you who only wash at the sink, do shower after sex or daily when you have your period?

ulvie · 02/02/2020 19:02

*menstrual blood

I grew up in the days of a bath once a week and my bits and pieces washed daily either at the kitchen or bathroom sink.

Another house we lived in had a toilet at the bottom of the garden with only a sink in the kitchen to wash in. People would go to the public bath houses or like us we’d go to my grans for a bath and my dad would go to his mums or it would have taken all night.

Eventually my parents bought their house and our conditions improved. We had one bathroom and plenty of hot running water. One day my mum came home with a shower to attach to the taps. It would only stay on if you held it with one hand and used the other to wash your hair etc.

Decades later I live somewhere where every bedroom is built with its own en-suite and none of my grandchildren have ever had to share a bathroom.

I won’t say how many bathrooms I have in my house but it’s more than 10 and 9 of them are used daily.

expatinspain · 02/02/2020 19:08

You need to clean yourself each day, however you choose to do it. If you wear deodorant, you need to clean off the excess to reapply. Even if I’m not wearing makeup, I still have dirt on my face when I cleanse it in the evening, so you have to clean that too. Bum, fanny and feet should be cleaned each day too. I personally find a shower every day quicker and more convenient. I was my hair every three days, unless I’ve done sport or something. A strip wash seems such a faff to me. Surely you get water on the floor and have to clean it up. A shower takes a few minutes if you’re not washing your hair.

bencrone03 · 02/02/2020 19:20

Personally I say shower every day

userxx · 02/02/2020 19:22

Bath everyday.

Lovemusic33 · 02/02/2020 19:22

I don’t always wash my whole body daily, I don’t tend to sweat unless I have been to the gym so can go a couple days without a shower, I don’t get smelly feet, sweaty pits etc..., I’m not over weight so don’t really get sweaty areas. I wear lose clothing most of the time and never wear tights (they doo make your foof sweat). I bath 5 days out of 7. I’m single so I don’t have to worry about after sex smells, when I’m on my period I wash every day. Some people are just more smelly than others 🤣🤣

Also I don’t wear make up and just wash my face with water when needed (my skins pretty good).

beingmum39 · 02/02/2020 19:28

I like to shower everyday but there are some occasions when I will miss a day. But I feel so much better once I have had a shower then when I have gone without

Casiloco · 02/02/2020 19:35

I bath most days but will often go a day without and as I'm not sweaty, I can assure you I still smell fine - my DH is v particular and would tell me if I was whiffy!
PPs saying that you smell if you haven't showered in 24 hours must be talking about people who have an issue with BO in general. I have a friend with a medical condition which means she really struggles to stay "fresh" without a shower twice a day, but that is rare.

Rachel709 · 02/02/2020 19:36

My mum had no electricity or running water growing up. Baths were rare her mum had to boil the water one pot at a time and the bath was tin. They did have a strip wash every single day at the sink though, of face, neck, ears, hands, and private bits. This was in the 60s in a rural location.

Wilkie1956mog · 02/02/2020 19:47

I usually shower with shower gel every morning and also a quick wash of my private bits in the evening, just with warm water. Now and again if I'm really busy or don't feel very well, I'll just have a wash in the morning instead of a shower, washing my underarms and private bits. "A whore's bath" as my mum used to say. I couldn't go more than a day without a good wash of those areas at least.

Jack80 · 02/02/2020 19:51

I dont have time in the morning to have a shower I'm in work for 7 and I would wake others up at 6.30 having a shower, I don't have periods so I would have a shower more if I did, I should shower move but I always get complemented by my husband that I smell nice.

Ayomi · 02/02/2020 19:56

I work shifts, have 4 of us at home and a hot water tank that needs to warm. As mum, married to a mechanic who DEFINITELY needs a daily shower, and teens who smell, my shower is the low priority to me. Sometimes it’s 2 days (I will wash important places at the sink!) and I can end up not washing my long thick hair for days!
Always shower daily in the hot weather tho! And I don’t care then If the water is warm...

josbd · 02/02/2020 20:08

Usually I will shower once, sometimes twice a day. However, I suffer from black depressive states where I can barely feel, let alone shower. Even when I am coming out of that state, it is an exhausting thought (pathetic though that sounds) to get in the shower. Once I have forced myself to do so... I think "why the buggery blx did I not do this before!!" And yet next time....

ulvie · 02/02/2020 20:13

The sink strip wash is known in Australia as a “pommie shower”. We have (maybe not so much now but definitely did, as my friends parents joke about it) for being a bit pongie in Australia.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 02/02/2020 20:21

I cant understand how a strip wash replaces a shower if there’s not much time - sounds much harder work that just jumping in for a quick all over lather and a 1mi shower - and how do you rinse your lady bits in a sink?
Unless you have a bidet it’s surely quicker to shower.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 02/02/2020 20:28

I don’t own a flannel! Am I alone in that? And what are those mesh soap-latherer things actually called?
