To think I'm the worst cook in the world?

First time making a lasagna.
I followed all the instructions and it tasted awful.
I think I know where I went wrong.
I cooked them (it was 20% fat beef ) and I didn't drain the fat out of it before I added the tomato to the pan.
So my sauce just tasted of mince grease.
Is this why it went wrong?

Yes

crustycrab · 31/01/2020 14:42

That's where you went wrong. Not yes you are the worst cook!

HardAsSnails · 31/01/2020 14:42

What recipe did you use?

TWD89 · 31/01/2020 14:44

I’d actually chuck a kettle of boiled water over it too when it’s drained.

But I use 5% meat as the fatty stuff is vile!

BestestBrownies · 31/01/2020 14:45

Next time use lamb mince. Tastes about a million times nicer and has much better texture once fried (you’ll still need to drain any fat off though).

whyamidoingthis · 31/01/2020 14:45

think knowing where you went wrong is the hallmark of a good cook, so long as you learn from your mistakes.

CakeandCustard28 · 31/01/2020 14:46

Your not the worse cook in the world. I know of someone who constantly feeds her kids pot noddles day in, day out as that’s all she knows how to “cook”.
Yes that’ll be why I usually pour boiling hot water over my mince once it’s drained too.

crustycrab · 31/01/2020 14:46

Oh no. Don't use lamb mince! Just get 5% fat beef mince! And a squirt of tomato purée and Worcestershire sauce. Red wine if you have it

TheFlis12345 · 31/01/2020 14:47

How long did you cook it for? It shouldn’t taste fatty even with 20% mince if you cook it long enough for the fat to render properly.

DramaAlpaca · 31/01/2020 14:47

The mince was too fatty for a lasagne. I use 5% fat & still drain it after browning.

It doesn't mean you're a bad cook at all.

GinNotGym19 · 31/01/2020 14:50

I use 5% fat and fry light, doesn’t need draining!

onaclouds · 31/01/2020 14:50

I fried it on medium for 8-10 mins until it was all brown then stupidly didn't drain it (argh ) then added the tinned tomato's,some tomato paste,herbs,200ml beef stock

OP posts:
onaclouds · 31/01/2020 14:51

@HardAsSnails I just used a "basic lasagne " recipe ...thought I could manage Confused

onaclouds · 31/01/2020 14:53

I'm not going to give up!!
I'm going to try again next week with 5% mince.
What il do is fry it and drain it then put it in another pan then add sauce.
See if that tastes nicer.

OP posts:
onaclouds · 31/01/2020 14:54

I let it simmer for about 30 mins too.

My meals I make are so boring.
Sausages and mash
Chicken roast dinner
Chicken and vegetables
Penne carbonara

LOL, never mind, my first lasagne I could have used as tractor tyre tread - and we had guests!

HardAsSnails · 31/01/2020 14:58

I've used 20% mince many times and it doesn't taste fatty at all. I'm assuming you started with onions/carrots/celery (soffrito) or even just onions? You shouldn't need stock. The key is to simmer for at least a couple of hours for the fat to render properly and enrichen the sauce. If you add your tomato purée and herbs/seasoning before adding any liquid and cook it for a couple of minutes it really helps increase the flavour/richness.

mrsBtheparker · 31/01/2020 14:58

Took me over 20 years to make a decent curry, I always seemed to wind up with no sauce. When we were in India the curries we had were very dry, unless you asked for the sauce separately, so I felt a bit vindicated!

x2boys · 31/01/2020 15:00

I use 5% mince dry fry it and still drain any excess far I hate greasy mince meat .

HardAsSnails · 31/01/2020 15:01

I really hope all you mince drainers aren't draining in the sink?

onaclouds · 31/01/2020 15:04

@HardAsSnails I forgot the onions and carrots
I just used mince then added the tomato, herbs garlic

Professional chefs mess up too sometimes. It happens. Try tweaking it next time.

And I bet your family still ate it all up. (Or were you cooking just for you?) If you're anything like me you're the harshest judge of your own cooking.

onaclouds · 31/01/2020 15:09

@safariboot no just for me.
I thought I would take a couple of weeks trying to make a different thing every day.
Day one = epic fail ha ha
