To make him cancel the trip? WWYD?

Doubleyouexwhyandzed · 30/01/2020 10:02

We are supposed to be flying to Germany tomorrow for a huge international show. Lots of Chinese exhibitors.
My husband is immune suppressed following transplant.
Coronavirus has me spooked and I think we should cut our losses and cancel even though it’s all non refundable and £1k down the drain. DH thinks I’m being OTT and is willing to consider not going to the show but taking a short break there instead. I’m still uncomfortable about the large amount of people from potentially affected areas staying at our hotel/in the city.
So... wwyd?
YABU - go
YANBU- cancel

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 30/01/2020 10:04

I'd go, but if you're worried, go and just avoid the show.

81Byerley · 30/01/2020 10:36

I do think the fact that your husband's immunity is compromised makes a difference to this situation. I understand, as I was paranoid about infections when my husband was having chemotherapy. If you're staying in a hotel where there will be a lot of Chinese exhibitors staying, it will make no sense not to go to the show.

differentnameforthis · 30/01/2020 11:24

Would a good barrier mask help him at all? I'm not talking a standard medical mask either...

They are called P2 masks here (Australia) and are commonly being used at present by those in high smoke areas.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 30/01/2020 11:29

Would your travel insurance not kick in here (with regard to the £1k)?

TBH in your exact circs, I prob wouldn't go - you'll spend the whole time worried and won't enjoy the show and then the ongoing worry afterwards too.

Chamomileteaplease · 30/01/2020 11:33

If you husband becomes seriously ill then £1k is going to seem like a pittance.

Not worth the risk in my opinion. And as someone else said, how would you be able to enjoy it?? DH is being very short sighted IMO.

Cyberlibre · 30/01/2020 11:34

I'd see if you can get some money back through insurance. I'm pretty lax about lots of stuff but I think I wouldn't risk it in your DHs shoes.

CoffeeCoinneseur · 30/01/2020 11:37

Under normal circs I’d say go.

But immune suppressed following a transplant, nope. I’d happily lose the 1k.

queenuniversal · 30/01/2020 11:39

Immune suppressed after a transplant and I wouldn't even be getting on a plane regardless of corona virus. It's too risky an environment.

Zilla1 · 30/01/2020 11:40

If you thought it was a good idea to go and mix in a pool of travellers when your DH is immunosuppressed then I don't think Wuhan Corona would affect that thinking, based on what I understand to be the virus dynamics at the moment - becoming more infections but relatively not lethal. It appears to be similar in some ways to the common cold [much of which seems to be caused by other corona viruses as well as rhino viruses, I understand] in terms of being infectious but not very lethal based on numbers and the the health of the infected). This seems more infectious but much less lethal than MERS and SARS and 'flu for healthy people. I realise your DP is immunosuppressed but pre-Wuhan Corona, you both decided this trip/work was a good idea.

TeddyIsaHe · 30/01/2020 12:00

Immunosuppressed after a transplant? I wouldn’t even consider going on an airplane let alone with coronavirus in the mix.

What has he consultants said about travel?

BlackCatSleeping · 30/01/2020 12:01

He’s an adult so I don’t see how you can make him cancel. I’m surprised he’s wanting to travel anyway being immunosuppressed. Airports are full of germs and diseases.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/01/2020 12:04

I'd phone the consultants secretary and ask if an urgent question can be put forward to his consultant asking his or her opinion.

Ellapaella · 30/01/2020 12:04

I'm also quite surprised that he managed to get travel insurance if he's immune suppressed after a transplant. Has he spoken with his consultant about the trip?

CameFromAway · 30/01/2020 12:07

I'd ask his doctor rather than us random strangers on Mumsnet, OP

TomeOfSomething · 30/01/2020 12:08

are you visiting the show or exhibiting? if you are exhibiting, can you go alone? or with someone else?

but as above, check with the consultant office

AriadnesFilament · 30/01/2020 12:10

He’s immunosuppressed. Cancel.

SnoozyLou · 30/01/2020 12:12

I'd be surprised if he could get travel insurance, coronavirus or not. That should tell you everything you need to know.

YANBU

NellieEllie · 30/01/2020 12:15

Check with doctors. I wouldn’t risk it. He needs to do all he can not to risk his health at this point.

AryaStarkWolf · 30/01/2020 12:16

I would cancel

glitterfarts · 30/01/2020 12:17

If he goes, wear a mask, clear glasses and wash hands religiously.

He's an adult - it's his risk, but all the talk is that it isn't particularly dangerous for those NOT already in compromised health.
And that it is able to spread by coughing/sneezing droplets going into the eyes.

ArkAtEee · 30/01/2020 12:22

Being immunosuppressed doesn't mean you are at imminent risk of dropping dead all the time, to those people who are why he travels at all or asking how he has managed to get travel insurance.

There are degrees of immunosuppression and degrees of risk, it's really up to the individual to evaluate, possibly in conjunction with their care team, whether their current state of health can support the trip.

Having said that, I would have the same concerns as you OP about this particular trip.

INeedNewShoes · 30/01/2020 12:24

I’d ask his consultant or specialist nurse whose care he’s under.

But I know I’d be wary. We just don’t know which way this virus is going to go and airlines even in Europe might start refusing travel to any passenger with respiratory/flu like symptoms so contracting a standard chest infection or virus while out there might mean trouble coming back, just like people with unscabbed chicken pox aren't allowed to fly.

joggingon · 30/01/2020 12:25

If I went I wouldn't go to the show. mask + www.boots.com/vicks-first-defence-nasal-spray-15ml-10050146

TopOftheNaughtyList · 30/01/2020 12:25

I would think the plane would be as big a threat as the exhibitors at the conference. All that recycled air, and there will be some people on the plane with germs you can bet your life. I wouldn't go near an airport/plane if I was immunosuppressed.
