What contraception do you use?

What contraception do you use and do you rate it? I’m on the combined pill (microgynon) and tempted to come off it and just use condoms as so sick of all the artificial hormones and bloating. Thanks

I have the Mirena IUD. I love it - no side effects for me.

Me too. Best thing ever. I wish I'd discovered this years ago Blush

MaMaMaMySharona · 30/01/2020 10:09

I'm interested by the hatred towards the Depo injection. I've been on it for about 8 years (although am just finishing off my last shot before TTC) and have never had any issues.

No periods whatsoever (I despise them so this has been a blessing), no changes in my personality, no weight gain. No accidents. Nothing.

IhaveHagridshair · 30/01/2020 10:09

DH had a vasectomy. Before the that I had the Mirena IUD, pre kids I had the pill. Hated the pill. Mirena was much better, but nothing in my body is best of all. Luckily DH had a good experience, which I know isn't the case for all.

Nothing as DH had a vasectomy.

Tried various pills which made me tearful or angry.

Had the depo provera injection that made me psychotic and messed up my periods for the following year.

chockaholic72 · 30/01/2020 10:35

@Bonsaigem - think that's exaggerating a little. If you lost half to a pint of blood every day you'd be dead in a week. It takes the body four to eight weeks just to replenish the bag you lose when you donate blood.

Sleepycat91 · 30/01/2020 10:37

I also strongly suggest using anything BUT the depo. I went from a size 10 to a 20 within a YEAR. Drs swore back then it never caused a weight gain whereas when i got the contraception talk after DD they admitted it did. I was on microgynon for the rest of the 10 years but started getting migraines so stopped it and my anxiety got better aswell, felt like my head came out of the clouds. Used pull out and condoms for 4 years until we started TTC and didnt have any accidental pregnancies. Plan is for OH to have the snip this year as both DC were conceived 1st try pretty much. I wont go back on contraception, ive done my time on it despite Drs best efforts to bully me into it at 6 week check🙄

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/01/2020 10:40

Was sterilised 12yrs ago.

tomatosoup4 · 30/01/2020 10:44

I'm on cerelle and it works fine for me.just want to say I had the depo for 7 years and had no side effects what so ever, didn't see a period either which was fantastic. Tried it again after my last baby and it was horrific I bled for 3 months straight. So now I'm on the pill.

LunasOrchid · 30/01/2020 10:46

I was on the pill but came off it and used condoms. Ended up pregnant three times. Don't rely on condoms.

ClientQueen · 30/01/2020 10:47

Copper coil, on my third one

Dandelion1993 · 30/01/2020 10:55

Husband had the snip and we use condoms.

Crystal87 · 30/01/2020 10:58

I am sterilised but I am 100% sure I don't want more kids.

OneTooManyBathtimes · 30/01/2020 11:07

Microgynon made me put weight on, triggered depression and made me have cramps for the first time ever.

We use condoms. DH may or may not get a vasectomy. But the condoms is mainly because I can't stand the feeling of ejaculate leaking out of me when he pulls out.

EpcotForever · 30/01/2020 11:16

I use the pill, after my second baby I gave depo a try. Bled for the whole 3 months so went back to the pill. I would like to explore other options but cannot deal with the bleeding again.

Mauhea · 30/01/2020 11:21

I'm on Cerelle and really get on with it. Didn't notice any unwanted side effects and it stopped my periods instantly. I have read some horror stories about coming off it again though so not looking forward to that when I'm ready for kiddos!

latheritup · 30/01/2020 11:23

After I have given birth I will be using condoms. I have tried the pill, injection and Mirena and didn't get on them for various reasons so it's better for me to be comfortable and stick to the old school way!

HoneyBee03 · 30/01/2020 13:46

I'm on the combined pill and I hate it, but my GP will only recommend the coil as an alternative (and for them to insert it I'd need to be drugged up to the eyeballs and pinned down). So I'm just sticking with the pill until the doctor agrees that DP is old enough for the snip.

We tried condoms and ended up having no sex at all for 2 months because they're so awful.

DramaAlpaca · 30/01/2020 13:51

DH had the snip when DC3 was a year old.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 30/01/2020 13:59

Condoms or cap. I don’t live with partner so know when I am going to have sex so it doesn’t spoil the mood but I guess it’s not great when you do

I have become pregnant more than once on the pill and after trying many pills I realised putting extra hormones in my body impacted me negatively (sore boobs, headaches, bloating heavier periods)

Had awful experience with the coil

Damntheman · 30/01/2020 14:05

DH had a vasectomy. But I still use microgynon as I quite like a) not having a surprise period after having not had one for 3 months, b) definitely knowing I'm not pregnant c) not losing what feels like half my body weight in blood and uterine tissue every so often and d) being able to choose to just not have a period.

DH thought I should come off the pill now he had the snip but ... no I quite like having the control.

elc19 · 30/01/2020 14:10

Depo injection was a delight for me, no periods for 2 years HOWEVER took me 6 months to get a period and another 7 months to conceive after.

Implant made me bleed every day for 3 months until I stood in the surgery and said I wasn't leaving until they removed it.

Pill gave me a blood clot.

As we are planning on conceiving this year we are just using condoms (lots of miscarriages so not ideal to be pregnant whilst investigations are being carried out)

PickleMyPepper · 30/01/2020 14:13

I take the mini pill (desogestrel) and have had no problems with it at all.
I've been very lucky, it's done what it's meant to since I started taking it, no side effects and no periods!

GinDaddy · 30/01/2020 14:16

Marriage.

CinderEmma · 30/01/2020 14:17

Mini pill for me. Desogestorel but I'm considering stopping it. My periods are all over the place. Might have one then another 2 weeks later, might not bleed for 6 weeks, I'm bloated all the time, I've gained weight and I'm not sure if the hormones trigger anxiety in me.
