Depression and voices

I've been diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety and was wondering if anyone experienced hearing voices (angry ones) with their depression? And if so, did they go away once your depression was lifted. Feeling low and scared and in need of some reassurance. I'm on 20mg citalopram and 5mg olanzipine. Thank you in advance.

You need to speak to the medical professional in charge of your care. People on here can’t give you the expert advice you need.

Mitzicoco · 01/02/2020 15:49

I think the OP is well aware that she need to speak to her psych. She is seeking re-assurance from people who have or are going through the same thing, to feel less afraid and alone.

bonjour16 · 01/02/2020 17:19

@Mitzicoco thank you. That is exactly so. I see my psychiatrist on tuesday. I just wanted to see if anyone experienced something similar with their anxiety/depression. Thanks again!!

I’m sorry to jump in on here. The voices you hear- are they your own voice or others? Is it like an inner dialogue of them telling you things?

I can’t help with it, but I just wanted to say please do speak to your GP. Get all the help you can. Life doesn’t have to be this utterly awful. Depression is hideous and life sucking- throw everything you can at it to get to a better place.

bonjour16 · 01/02/2020 20:10

Thanks for your reply. It's just weird yelling I hear. Almost in my head. I know they are not real. But very frightening.

Anyone else experienced something similar? ☹️

I've been on sertaline for 3 weeks. Went to the doctor's just after ny when I realised I was getting bad. I've been having a sting urge the last 3 days to kill myself. I wouldn't describe it as voices, just like it's the best idea.

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 15:54

@pearses please keep yourself safe. I've had similar thoughts but it's not the answer and don't feel this way anymore. With the right medication, you will feel better. Please go back to your GP if you are still feeling low. They should help you. Sending you a big hug x

I don't think you're alone, is it your thought process giving you an instruction, like a different person or does it sound like a separate voice? My DD has intrusive thought, when she is stressed she hears a low voice calling her name.
Speak to your GP. It is very frightening in the mist of it. Take care.

EmeraldShamrock · 03/02/2020 16:04

@pearses Keep talking to people, steraline stopped any of the suicidal thoughts I was having but it took a few months. Please know it is a terrible idea. Flowers
Anyone else experienced something similar? Many do there is a name for it. People would probably be more willing to share their experiences if the post was in the MH section.

ItsAlwaysSunnyInPhiladelphia · 03/02/2020 16:09

I haven’t heard voices per say.
But I was having bad impulsive thoughts and fantasies to hurt and kill myself. It all got too scary last week so I went to the doctor last Thursday and now taking 50mg or sertraline (sp?) and touch wood, the thoughts have stopped and I am starting to feel more myself already.
Best of luck with everything op x

I experienced hearing voices (though I did not beleive they were real) when I had severe depression. I was not medicated at the time. I was later told by a doctor that it was something called depressive psychosis. In my case it went away without treatment, but I would urge you to seek treatment as it is very distressing.

mauvaisereputation · 03/02/2020 16:22

Also fwiw my depression did go and I have not had a reccurrence of the hearing voices. So it is definitely not necessarily something longterm. Your doctor will better advise though.

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 16:43

Apologies I posted on here by mistake but did put up a similar post up on the MH section but have not had such good response. Thank you for all your replies x

@mauvaisereputation thank you for your reply. I hope mine go when depression and anxiety eases. May I ask what kind of voices you experienced. Mine is more like a presence and sometimes I hear yelling in my head or my name called. It's really frightening. Thanks again!

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 16:49

@mauvaisereputation may I also ask how you managed to get better without medication?

OP posts:
EmeraldShamrock · 03/02/2020 16:55

@bonjour16 I'm sure it will pass, as long as you aware it is not real, your mind isn't feeling well, it will play tricks on you, run away, it is not uncommon to hear voices through sleep deprivation, your mind is exhausted.
I am on a much higher dose of sertaline. I am not familiar with the other medication you mentioned, if it won't be affected, I'd asked for your sertaline to be increased.

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 17:04

Not sure if I'm sleep deprived as all I want to do is sleep because I'm so anxious all the time. Maybe I need an increase in citalopram!? Thank you for all your replies.

Hi I had this, it was outside my head though it felt like it was coming from outside. I heard people laughing and babies crying (after bad PND)

It was very frightening. It did get better with time some of the things like sleep, trying tolerate and eat properly helped it as much as the medication.

I was also in olanzapine like you and mirtazapine / changed to fluoxetine. I still take these in low voices. It can improve OP look after yourself.

Orangeblossom78 · 03/02/2020 17:15

I found distraction can help a bit like listening to music. I also had things like messages and weird delusions

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 17:28

@Orangeblossom78 thank you. I've had hearing babies cry and laughing too. It's frightening. I'm on 5mg olanzipine but don't feel it is doing much to help these experiences. How long did it take you to recover? Thanks again!

OP posts:
Orangeblossom78 · 03/02/2020 17:34

I still take a low dose 5mg a few years on to prevent it, again, at the time think it was a bit higher and they lowered it slowly, they might want to up yours a bit - to be honest I think the other stuff, sleep etc helped it just as much though.

Thing is, stress can cause lack of sleep making it worse. Yes it was like people laughing at me and saying horrible stuff.

bonjour16 · 03/02/2020 18:17

@Orangeblossom78 thanks. I see my psychiatrist tomorrow so will see what he says. I hope you are well now. It's reassuring to see these things can get better x
