How much water do you drink per day?

Caramel78 · 29/01/2020 13:41

I’ve just used this calculator to determine how much water I need to drink every day for my weight and it says 3.7 litres. Does this sound about right or excessive? I’m 5ft 6 and 12 and half stone.
I’ve been drinking 2 litres per day and thought I was doing well with that! I feel like I’d never be off the toilet if I drank more than that

the whole water consumption thing is not actually true.

The original study which said you need 8 glasses per day, didn't say anything of the kind. It calcuated how much liquid an adult needed.

All liquids count, juicy apple, gravy, pint of beer, milk on cereal, juice form your baked beans. You get a large amount of it from your food. the rest can be taken in any way.

Your stomach does not distinguish between water and tea. The water from anything is absorbed by osmosis, so the water from your tea is absorbed into your stomach/intestine as water.

I have recently bought a 2l refillable bottle. I empty that a day plus a cup or 2 of coffee or green tea a day. My wee is practically clear.

That calculator says I should be drinking 4.61l a day and that would be impossible. That level of water would be verging on making people ill.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 29/01/2020 15:19

Because the medication I take requires me to make a note of this, I can state that I drink two 800ml bottles of iced tap-water a day. No tea, no coffee, no soft drinks; about 20ml milk on my morning porridge, and occasionally a mouthful of milk if my mouth gets very dry, because milk eases that better than water does. About once a month I might have a pint, or a glass or two of wine, or a measure of spirits plus a mixer, in company.

That (American) calculator suggests I ought to drink 4.02 litres of water a day; if I did that, my doctors would be downright unhappy about it, because it would be more than the diuretics I have been prescribed would easily cope with and all my medication dosages would need to be changed.

Except in desert conditions or very hot non-humid climates, I don't believe anyone ought to need more than two litres of water a day unless they are doing hard manual labour.

I remember reading once that if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Not sure if that is true but I do drink a lot. I have maybe one cup of tea a day and the rest is water. I always have a large glass of water as soon as i wake up and then have big sports bottles of water.

Since I have done this my skin is better and the headaches I used to get are gone. My mum on the other hand hates water and only drinks coffee or squash and often complains of headaches. My husband is awful for drinking water too

BohoBunney · 29/01/2020 15:20

No one person needs the same amount of water. Height, Weight, Activity, Weather all are factors. If your wee is straw coloured and light you're hydrated and intaking enough liquid.

Purplewithred · 29/01/2020 15:28

No water at all. Hate it. I drink a lot of PG tips tea, a little wine and a very occasional glass of squash or cup of coffee. And I am 62 and still alive and most people think I'm mid 50s at the oldest.

Water - pah!

Although I have considered doing the thing where you drink a glass of water before eating so you eat a bit less. But a glass of water before every biscuit is just dull dull dull

user764329056 · 29/01/2020 15:29

I drink gallons as don’t like tea or coffee, nothing quenches thirst like water IMO

Orangecake123 · 29/01/2020 15:34

2 liters at a guess.

isthismylifenow · 29/01/2020 15:38

My dd was just at the dietician yesterday, why is for another thread. Dietician has said part of her problems are that she is over hydrated, she drinks 6 to 7 litres of water each day. This excludes coffee in morning etc. She needs 2l to max 3l per day. Anything over that is apparently not good. Maybe if there is a dietician on here that could confirm this. So just based on this I can't see how that calculator is correct.

LemonPrism · 29/01/2020 15:53

Shit tonnes- about 6 or 7 of my 750ml bottle. I'm drinking way too much according to that calculator. I just really like cold water though and am always drinking it.

I do pee loads Tbf. But I drink 750ml before work, 4 at work (only half a bottle an hour) 750 before/ with tea and one before bed.

Plus coffee.

Not so hard.

My wee is so clear it could be pass as water again tbh, Although neon berocca is also fun.

LemonPrism · 29/01/2020 15:55

@Meruem well lots of people's bodies clearly don't tell them what they need because they're overweight with bad skin, fucked up livers, gout and myriad other illnesses caused by eating bad food and dehydration.

Gone2far · 29/01/2020 15:56

I was reading Bill Bryson's book The Body, and he has an interesting section on this, saying that it's a myth that caffeinated drinks are diuretic, and that these kind of figures are nonsense.

Hirsutefirs · 29/01/2020 15:58

I eat when I’m hungry and drink when I’m dry.

It’s the code of the west.

But no water.

SingingLily · 29/01/2020 16:00

I have only one working kidney and even that doesn't work very well. My urologist told me to take in 3 litres of water per day to support my kidney function but this includes water in food. I actively drink two litres of water, tea and herbal tea per day, with perhaps one glass of wine per week. My kidney function is tested every three months and it has been stable since I followed this advice.

ChasingRainbows19 · 29/01/2020 16:03

At the minute anything between one to two litres of water but I work 12.5 hour days so I'm awake at 5:30 and I talk a lot as I work with children!
I have 4 coffees and maybe a peppermint tea. More water or squash in summer. It's plenty.

PhoneLock · 29/01/2020 16:09

I’ve just used this calculator to determine how much water I need to drink every day for my weight and it says 3.7 litres.

It doesn't say that at all. It says that need to consume 3.7 litres of water. In theory, you don't have to drink any of it, you could get it all from your food.

" To ensure your body functions as it should, you should ensure that you replenish any water you lose by consuming drinks and food items that contain water. "

Meruem · 29/01/2020 16:49

@LemonPrism
But that's because they've often ignored what their bodies were telling them in the first place!

Mirandaqueenbee · 29/01/2020 16:51

I probably drink 2 500 cl bottles a day and 2 coffees

Caramel78 · 29/01/2020 18:16

Such a range of answers. I feel ok having 2 litres so I’ll probably just stick to that and get any extra from food etc

Hirsutefirs · 29/01/2020 21:13

I do not drink water.

Fish fornicate in it.

ColourMyDreams · 29/01/2020 21:30

I drink a lot of water each day.
However, it's usually boiled with a teabag in it. 🙂

U2HasTheEdge · 29/01/2020 21:31

Well, I drink about 6- 8 cans of pepsi max a day, and that has water in.

Plain water? very rarely.

Theworldisfullofgs · 29/01/2020 21:36

Water toxicity is real and pretty bad.

Soda isn't good for your bones btw.

managedmis · 29/01/2020 21:37

Sounds a lot

AhoyMrBeaver · 29/01/2020 21:42

I never have water, but I drink plenty. I think I've had 9 or 10 cups of tea and coffee today.
