Someone has left rubbish on my drive

Posting mainly for traffic because I know I’m not being unreasonable. We are having some work done and there is a skip on the drive. I got home from the school run this afternoon to find some idiot has left a whole 3 piece suite on my driveway. My best guess is that they saw the skip earlier (was empty but now filled) and thought they would just bring their rubbish to it. So now I have an unwanted sofa languishing on my driveway. Any ideas what I can do about it? I’m a bit outraged at the moment because everything I’ve found looks as though it’s my problem because it’s on my driveway and not public land. Why do people think this is ok? AIBU to think this is a bit cheeky and I am not in fact a household waste recycling centre?

Do your council do a free pick up of old furniture? If so ask them to collect it. Why anyone thought it was ok to dump it on your drive is another matter but it is probably impossible to find who it was.

jalopy · 28/01/2020 19:14

Contact your council. They usually have a fly-tipping collection service to clear dumped stuff. Explain to them it's not yours. We had similar and they removed it without a problem.

Rosere · 28/01/2020 19:16

Fly tipping. Report it and also get the council to remove. Cannot believe someone would leave a 3 piece suite. Brass neck!

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 28/01/2020 19:17

What? Someone dumped a 3 piece suite on your drive??? Didn't the builders notice them doing it?

HelgaHere1 · 28/01/2020 19:17

Do neighbours have these wonder doorbell cameras which seem to film half the street?
They must have used a vehicle to deliver it to your drive, unless it's a direct neighbour, maybe you can get the car number.

BentNeckLady · 28/01/2020 19:17

The council won’t remove it u less it’s on their land. Push it off your drive and call them. If it’s on your property you will be expected to clear it.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 28/01/2020 19:18

Push it onto the pavement and report as fly-tipping.

misspiggy19 · 28/01/2020 19:18

Council won’t do anything because it is on private land- your driveway.

forrandomposts · 28/01/2020 19:19

Not true. The council here does free picks ups of large 'waste' like this. Ring them and see?

takeyourrubbishhome · 28/01/2020 19:20

Yep - looks like it was probably in the time period between the builders finishing and me coming home. It’s a really quiet street so I doubt anyone saw but I can ask. I think @BentNeckLady is correct that because my driveway is my land it’s my problem, but I hadn’t thought about bulky collections, that might be worth a call

Move it onto the public highway and call the council. They wont remove it if it is on private land!

takeyourrubbishhome · 28/01/2020 19:22

There is a small chance the builders are winding me up (which I will find out in the morning) and it’s something to do with them. But I did send a message and he was adamant it wasn’t them

Check your local Facebook marketplace to see if you can see the sofa on there? They may have tried to get rid of it that way

MsMiaWallace · 28/01/2020 19:25

It's most likely the council won't collect it from your drive for free.
Unfortunately once waste is dumped onto your property it's your responsibility.

Up to you... chance it, report the dumping to the council & see if they'll remove it for free, again unlikely, or move it onto the pavement & say dumped there (public land) where they'll take it.

74NewStreet · 28/01/2020 19:26

They won’t remove it from your drive. In London it costs £80 to have large items removed, they won’t waive the charge just because you claim somebody else dumped it on your drive, or nobody would ever pay it...

Lincs90 · 28/01/2020 19:27

Don't move it onto the public highway - you would be the one flytipping and risk being held responsible (my partner works in environmental health dept and used to investigate flytipping). You're best off calling the council and seeing if they can help.

takeyourrubbishhome · 28/01/2020 19:33

Getting rid of rubbish isn’t necessarily the issue - there are 2-3 skips a week going at the moment. My biggest issue is that if this suddenly disappears there might be more that follows. I guess I’d better get a camera put in overlooking the driveway - how tedious!

Is it in OK condition? You could arrange a charity that does furniture to collect it. Or put it on Freecycle.

takeyourrubbishhome · 28/01/2020 19:58

I think it looks a bit ropey really. And it’s been rained on now

This happened to us. The council said they would come and collect it for £20. Grin

Urkiddingright · 28/01/2020 20:35

Most councils charge in my experience but it usually isn’t a huge cost, around £20-30. Sadly this can be a common occurrence when you have a skip in your front garden.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 28/01/2020 21:25

Im really sorry @takeyourrubbishhome but this has really made me laugh...I'd be livid if i came home to a 3 piece suite on my drive but im giggling as i write thisGrin

takeyourrubbishhome · 28/01/2020 22:34

Its definitely not funny! But mostly I feel a little bit violated, inasmuch as someone has come on to my property with the express intention of causing me trouble. Ok it’s ok some level just inconvenient but what if there is more?!
