Today's first world problem - who's BU?

So every Feb I try and have a 'no spend' month. This basically takes the form of working through the years topcashback/clubcard points/nectar points/ boots points etc and not spending any money on anything other than bills. This works out quite nicely to get me out of the post christmas slump (and it's only 28 days).

So... the AIBU. My partner and I (been together about a year, dont live together) tend to eat out at least once a week. I've suggested i can do this on clubcard boost with the likes of Bella Italia, Cafe Rouge etc whereby I'll cover the cost of the food in vouchers and he can pay for the drinks (a £15 bottle of wine). He thinks that as I'm using vouchers, we should split the cost of the wine.

But they're my precious points that I've saved sob and it would ruin my no spend Feb. (Well the rule is none essential spends need to come from money generated - so ebay/fb, but still a PITA).

He's a very reasonable man, so this wont cause arguments, but AIBU in covering the cost of the meal in vouchers and asking him to pay the drinks? Which incidentally is going to be much less than the meal hammers my point home

I think you're right - it's not 'vouchers', it's MONEY YOUVE SAVED - converted to vouchers

Batqueen · 27/01/2020 18:46

Yeah, normally I would be on his side if it was say a 2-4-1 voucher or 40% off voucher then you both should benefit but in this case you are trying to be frugal whilst not changing the dynamic.

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 27/01/2020 18:46

If they are strictly your points then I’d say you aren’t being unreasonable but if it’s a card you both take with you and put points on it whenever you buy things, no matter how big or small, then I’d say you might be being unreasonable.

Glad to hear it’s not a massive argument though, it’s not worth falling out over £7.50 for

littlepaddypaws · 27/01/2020 18:47

do you normally split the cost ? what the problem with vouchers ? use them i would and he can buy the wine this time and stop moaning talking about it.

SharpieInThe · 27/01/2020 18:48

Tell him you're going yourself, have two puddings and drink tap water!

They're vouchers you've saved. Unless he's doing no-spend (great idea btw) his being miserable about a bottle of wine.

WeHaveSnowdrops · 27/01/2020 18:49

He's a tight git.

Get rid.

Leeds2 · 27/01/2020 18:53

Could you cover the cost of your meal alone in vouchers, so that he pays for his own, and either share the cost of the wine, or drink tap water?

MRex · 27/01/2020 18:53

What @WeHaveSnowdrops said.

crustycrab · 27/01/2020 18:55

No, dong let him ruin your no spend February!!

Are you ex elite 11+ and if so do you know where they've gone? Grin

Queenoftheashes · 27/01/2020 18:56

Meh if he won’t support the no spend spirit tell him you’ll see him in March

KenDodd · 27/01/2020 18:57

What @MRex said.

HeddaGarbled · 27/01/2020 19:00

Hmm, not sure it’s really a no-spend month if someone else is buying you wine. Nice try, though🍷

CherryPavlova · 27/01/2020 19:00

I’ve never done it but I really like the idea of no spend February using various points and vouchers.

Tohaveandtohold · 27/01/2020 19:01

What @KenDodd said

mummmy2017 · 27/01/2020 19:02

Explain to him your not spending this month.
Your vouchers will take X off the bill.
But if he won't go out if no spend, does he want to stay home and watch TV.

Clymene · 27/01/2020 19:03

It's win win is t it? You buy the food using your vouchers, he gets the wine

Coldemort · 27/01/2020 19:03

Well in the interest of full disclosure he does have my clubcard on his key fob. But he doesn't really use it (much to my annoyance) and I hunt down clubcard deals like a blood hound!

Doubt he's contributed more that a couple of packets of crumpets worth...

Ahh my ploy to get no spend wine has been foiled Grin

But if I didn't spend the vouchers on meals out I would probably choose a different boost. I convert my topcashback to tesco vouchers which comes in handy for the wine Wine

@crustycrab 'fraid not. Who is this ex elite you speak of?

OP posts:
Coldemort · 27/01/2020 19:09

@crustycrab and quite a suspicious auticorrect there. What have you been talking about? Wink

TopOftheNaughtyList · 27/01/2020 19:10

If he insists on you paying half the wine then tell him you'll only be paying for your own meal with the vouchers, because they're money vouchers, not 2-4-1. If the food is more than £7.50, see how quickly he backtracks.

Jeezoh · 27/01/2020 19:18

Can’t you just use the vouchers to pay for your share of the total bill (making sure you don’t order anything above the value of the voucher) and he pays for whatever he eats and drinks?

44PumpLane · 27/01/2020 19:27

Agree... Drunk tap water and pay 9nly for the cost of your food on principal!

BritneyPeedOnALadybug · 27/01/2020 19:49

Well in the interest of full disclosure he does have my clubcard on his key fob. But he doesn't really use it

In the last 365 days has he used it enough to accrue more than £7.50 worth of money off vouchers?

Thehop · 27/01/2020 19:53

The vouchers are from Money/points that you e saved! Not freebies!
