Today's first world problem - who's BU?

So every Feb I try and have a 'no spend' month. This basically takes the form of working through the years topcashback/clubcard points/nectar points/ boots points etc and not spending any money on anything other than bills. This works out quite nicely to get me out of the post christmas slump (and it's only 28 days).

So... the AIBU. My partner and I (been together about a year, dont live together) tend to eat out at least once a week. I've suggested i can do this on clubcard boost with the likes of Bella Italia, Cafe Rouge etc whereby I'll cover the cost of the food in vouchers and he can pay for the drinks (a £15 bottle of wine). He thinks that as I'm using vouchers, we should split the cost of the wine.

But they're my precious points that I've saved sob and it would ruin my no spend Feb. (Well the rule is none essential spends need to come from money generated - so ebay/fb, but still a PITA).

He's a very reasonable man, so this wont cause arguments, but AIBU in covering the cost of the meal in vouchers and asking him to pay the drinks? Which incidentally is going to be much less than the meal hammers my point home

Your vouchers are as good as money from where he's sitting, aren't they? They didn't just flutter through your letterbox from the voucher fairy. They represent your careful shopping and organised approach to shopping.

Why should you share those rewards with him AND pay the whole wine bill? How does he work that one out?

Nah, tell him the deal is vouchers for food, his cash for wine or there's no outing. He risks looking like a freeloader here of he doesn't think it through - does he realise this?

Wonkywyebrows · 27/01/2020 20:04

There’s 29 days in Feb this year. Misses point of the thread Grin

He is BU, not you!

Ohtherewearethen · 27/01/2020 20:35

Could you pay for the whole meal and wine using your vouchers and he then gives you his half in cash?

Coldemort · 27/01/2020 20:42

You can only use the vouchers off food not alcohol. Sorry forgot some people might not be quite so clubcard obsessed!

And has he built up £7.50? Doubt if its 30p the not understanding joy of clubcard bastard. Should ltb just for that really...

Can you go to a place where it's BYOB? You could buy your wine in Tesco with your vouchers? 😊

greenlavender · 27/01/2020 20:45

It's a bit joyless & forensic. Maybe you should just stay in.

Goldenbear · 27/01/2020 21:27

I have to say I agree with greenlavender, however I am lazy when it comes to reward cards so I'm impressed by all this organisation.

Myyearmytime · 27/01/2020 21:43

Used your voucher to pay for the food. And you just have tap water. He buys his own drinks .

crustycrab · 27/01/2020 21:46

Dong 🙈😂 Jesus wept.

Any elite 11+ about? I can't reveal the secret club but no spend February was a thing. God, I used to live so cheaply thanks to them

Coldemort · 27/01/2020 22:25

I dont find it joyless, I actually really enjoy the challenge. And the spare cash at the end of it....
As I said in the original post, not something we'd ever fall out over just seeing it from different angles.
Really want in on this secret club though Wink

I know you’re being lighthearted but I actually think he’s being really tight.

I’d tell him I wasn’t going to eat out with him in February then.

Nomel · 28/01/2020 00:44

You both sound a bit tight to me. Not sure I could be with a man who wouldn’t shout me a bottle of wine

recrudescence · 28/01/2020 06:29

The strict rules you have for February spending might be fun for you and a bit a bore for him. Compromise.

Apolloanddaphne · 28/01/2020 06:42

The compromise is that you drink tap water and he buys himself a glass of wine or a beer if he wants one.

Damntheman · 28/01/2020 08:11

I see his point, although I seem to be one of the few who do ;) If you're doing no-spend wouldn't it be more fun to have the challenge of making the meal at home be as interesting as possible without spending money? Stay in, have a cosy time instead and save the eating out for March when you'll be spending again!

GabriellaMontez · 28/01/2020 08:15

Normally I'd be on your side re the vouchers. But I find it irritating when people do these rigid fad month things and expect everyone to fall in to line. So I ticked yabu.
