to bin this 'friend'?

DS (6) has a new 'friend'. I'm not impressed. AIBU if I bin this 'friend'?

New 'friend' is called Piney and is a lump of pineapple. All Piney's siblings got eaten, but Piney is special. Piney sleeps in the fridge but likes to watch DS playing games on his xbox. DS like to talk to him.
Last night DS cried because Piney couldn't sleep in his bed with him. Piney has been here for almost a week now. Do I bin him?

Bear in mind that DS is autistic and his actual bestie emigrated last month and he's really missing him. Piney is a rebound friend.

Oh that jellycat pineapple is absolutely adorable!

Nervouswee · 27/01/2020 16:21

@fetchezlavache there’s also a JellyCat watermelon. It’s super-cute!

AutumnRose1 · 27/01/2020 16:22

Is Piney going off? Can he be preserved somewhat in alcohol?

I still remember that stage of childhood, please be kind.

I’m 44 next week!!

CakeandCustard28 · 27/01/2020 16:22

My kid (also autism) adopted a piece of cardboard with a cat drawn on it for months. I feel ya! 😂 The cardboard cat picture also magically transformed into a stuffed cat. Get the stuffed pineapple.

LOVE Jellycat pineapple

The Jelly Owl has been on the lash, big time

TopOftheNaughtyList · 27/01/2020 16:27

I'd either put the Jellycat pineapple in the fridge so that your DS thinks he transformed, or, when it arrives in the post, tell DS that his friend (that emigrated) sent it to him. Might make him more acceptable of it?

Rinsefirst · 27/01/2020 16:39

My daughter (6) befriended a swimming aid that was a plastic Octopus. It went everywhere for about a month. She nicknamed it Big Pussy. None of us ever said a word. Now in her twenties, she finds it hilarious.

MovinOnUp · 27/01/2020 16:42

Had the same with DS when he was a similar age.
We had 'Boney' (a chicken drumstick bone) and 'Canny' a flattened coke can he'd found on the beach.
I binned them when his back was turned, Bit of a meltdown ensued right enough. I felt it was worth it.

Rinsefirst · 27/01/2020 16:42

And if you do hook up with the Jellycat pineapple - buy two an tuck the spare away We have six re-incarnations of a jellycat toy from 1997.

FraglesRock · 27/01/2020 16:44

Could his friend 'post' him one one those toys. Ie put it in paper on the mat for him to find. Might help him make a link to it.

Obv have to prep friends mum if you're still in touch.

WheresMyChocolate · 27/01/2020 16:52

So I've ordered a Jellycat pineapple and on the way to taekwando DS handed me the perfect solution. He was going on about his usual obsession, pokemon. So I asked him what type of pokemon Piney was. At first he was 'duh, he's a bit of fruit' but now he's totally bought into the idea that Piney is a newly discovered fruit type pokemon, whose first evolution at level 16 will be to Pineopple with fruit punch ability and second evolution is to Pineapathon whose abilities I forget. So Piney will be reaching level 16 in 2-3 days!

Maybe a toy pineapple? Get on amazon quickly!

thiscouldbethehill · 27/01/2020 16:58

That is so lovely. Please let us know how he gets on with the new evolved Piney. My ds had an Aubergine for a best friend for a while. He was ‘best friend Ober-Gene’. It slept in his bed and had to be replaced surreptitiously several times before a cuddly toy finally took his place.

Ps. I really want a jellycat pineapple now.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/01/2020 17:02

I've just seen that Jellycat do a happy pineapple. Piney might me magically transformed overnight.

I would do this - it's well known that pineapple chunks are the larval form of happy pineapples , like caterpillars and butterflies. (Another poster has put a link on - they look lovely and I would like one myself)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 27/01/2020 17:03

Jesus Christ!

What the actual EFF?!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/01/2020 17:07

Yes definitely get him a pineapple toy.Bless his little heart.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 27/01/2020 17:09

@mumsiedarlingrevolta what is it with kids and unimaginative names. We have:
Liony
Pandy
Giraffy
Tigy
Monkey-i Grin

seltaeb · 27/01/2020 17:13

Your DS could learn about decomposition.......put it on a saucer under a glass and leave it for as long as DS remains interested. Personally I would not bin Piney while DS is so attached.

KurriKurri · 27/01/2020 17:14

Felt pineapple chunks on etsy if he doesn;t buy the full pineapple story Grin
here

BaronessBomburst · 27/01/2020 17:15

IvyCove · 27/01/2020 17:21

What age group is that mosquito aimed at? Or am I

TheQueef · 27/01/2020 17:22

A pokeball rucksack and the jellycat toy.
I've got the feeling it will be enjoyed Grin
got something in my eye, ere

Redwinestillfine · 27/01/2020 17:26

Distraction, disappear (piney), more distraction.

FenellaVelour · 27/01/2020 17:28

I promise I won’t make friends with it this time

That is just so unutterably cute 💕

what is it with kids and unimaginative names.

My niece has renamed all my Pokémon on Pokémon Go.
They are all unimaginative. Foxy, Birdie, Pinky etc. Though she wanted to call one Poopyhead but it wasn’t allowed due to bad language 😁

gamerchick · 27/01/2020 17:32

Aw, this is actually quite common believe it or not. Mine (also autistic) went through a fruit as friends stage. Would line them all up on his pillow at bedtime as I watched them get increasingly soggier.

Direction onto something that can't go off is definitely the way to go.
