Witherspoon’s 2 drink limit for parents

I just saw an article about Witherspoons deciding to impose a 2 drink limit with parents who have their children with them. How do you feel about this? Is this being unreasonable?

Makes sense to me. If you’ve had
More than a couple of drinks, you’re probably not best to be
In charge of young children

wheresmyrunningshoes · 24/01/2020 21:04

Its a fair point. I go there a lot and there was a guy who literally left his child in his buggy indoors while he went outside, had a fag (two even) while drinking his pint sat down, having a read of the paper, ocassionally checking. Its not a creche!

celebratingrita · 24/01/2020 21:06

I guess you cant ID kids so it probably has to be all children. Its got more consequences than sneaking your kids in free at the zoo.

rosieposies · 24/01/2020 21:06

@Brokenlightfitting @bigchris

The Whetherspoons round my way smell of wee and are full of people who started drinking at 10am. I would not want to take my children there nor have more than two drinks. I appreciate though this might not be the case in all whetherspoons.

littlealexhorne · 24/01/2020 21:08

If the parents aren't going to put their child's best interests and safety first than its a relief somebody else will try to. They won't have brought this in without strong proof its necessary.

eeyore228 · 24/01/2020 21:10

Not unreasonable at all. If they are having to implement it then it suggests a problem. With respect I wouldn’t want to be drinking that much with kids around. Someone still needs to be responsible.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/01/2020 21:17

Not unreasonable at all. It's grim to take your children to the pub anyway unless you're having a meal, it's hardly a fun activity for kids.

Bluerussian · 24/01/2020 21:18

Presumably if people take children to Weatherspoons it's for something like Sunday lunch and I can't imagine many people would have more than two drinks then.

I must be the only one on here who has never been to a Weatherspoons, or at least not knowingly, but go out for pub lunch occasionally in other places and quite enjoy. I looked up Weatherspoons menu and don't think it is all that wonderful.

Drinking excessively around children is certainly not on.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 24/01/2020 21:19

Good. There's no need for parents to take their kids to pubs.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 24/01/2020 21:24

It's illegal to serve people who are inebriated in any case, yet when was the last time anyone saw that law being enforced? The only time I've ever heard the line 'I think you've had enough, don't you?' being trotted out by bar staff was on the TV.

If more landlords respected this law, things wouldn't have degenerated to the state they're in now. It should definitely be upheld on flights too - a lot more than it is.

But it won't be. God forbid their profit margins end up being affected.

WETHERSPOONS

Gosh- you hate them but have been in them all. You deserve a medal.

mummyway · 24/01/2020 21:25

Good on wetherspoons for doing that. Some of these parents want to have more than 2 glasses to drink and then get into cars with kids, or go home and be unable to parent.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 24/01/2020 21:27

Pretty sad that they've had to put that limit in place. What kind of person takes their kid out for a fun day of watching their parents get pissed?

How is the parent safety getting their kid home if they've had enough to drink to make them inebriated?

It seems to me like people should be able to self regulate, the fact that the pub has seen enough people not to that, they've decided they need an established rule in place is sad.

BlackSwan · 24/01/2020 21:28

what do you think the kids would say if they were asked. 'Nah I love it when mum/dad gets loaded/loud/slurs their speech/gets into fights...'

Brokenlightfitting · 24/01/2020 21:29

what do you think the kids would say if they were asked. 'Nah I love it when mum/dad gets loaded/loud/slurs their speech/gets into fights...'

because all of those things happen when you have 3 glasses of wine.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 24/01/2020 21:32

@Brokenlightfitting if you're being a pedant, the pub is called JD Wetherspoon. Use an apostrophe if you want to pluralise it.

BlackSwan · 24/01/2020 21:33

I don't have time for parents who put alcohol before their kids. 2 drinks sounds reasonable. But fight all you like for a third glass of wine - just shows what's important to you.

MajesticWhine · 24/01/2020 21:34

I like to drink, but I don't think this is unreasonable at all. Good for them.

karencantobe · 24/01/2020 21:34

Three large glasses of wine is a bottle.

ymf117 · 24/01/2020 21:49

Depends on the age of the child/children, but realistically why would a parent want more than two drinks when they are in charge of any children, hardly the time to get on it

Brokenlightfitting · 24/01/2020 22:13

Three large glasses of wine is a bottle.

And 2 standard glasses is half a bottle.

Your point being?

Brokenlightfitting · 24/01/2020 22:14

3 standard- typo

Geneshish · 24/01/2020 22:14

Sad that they have to impose this ban, but good for them for doing it. I would never drink with the kids there unless DH was sober and even then 2 large glasses of wine would make me waaay more tipsy than I would want to be in front of my children.

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/01/2020 22:15

To the posters who mentioned nightshift workers following on from my previous post, I totally get that and would definitely do the same! In my local Spoons it really isn't the case unfortunately...

Jaxhog · 24/01/2020 22:15

What a shame they think it is necessary. They won't have decided to do this lightly. After all, it will hit their bottom line if people consume less alcohol.
