To think it’s disgusting when checkout staff lick their fingers to open the bags???

As above. I absolutely hate this when I go shopping. I rarely forget my bags, but on the occasion I do and I need to buy a bag, it drives me up the wall when the staff members licks their thumb, opens the bag and proceeds to handle my food.

I was in a bakers recently and bought a sausage roll and the guy serving licked his finger to open the paper bag. I was nearly sick and thought how disgusting is that. If you’ll do that blatantly in front of me, I dread to think how low your hygiene standards when there’s no one there.

Was talking to my friend about it the other and she said the same, she finds it disgusting too. She said “They may as well spit on you. You don’t want any if they’d saliva on your stuff” and I quite agree.

Surely we’re not the only ones to think that?

If I was the owner of a business I would discipline staff if they done that!

I can't bring myself to care. Everything you touch is dirty. The bag is going to be dirty, the products on the shelves are dirty, the trolley is dirty, your car is dirty. The only scenario where I'd object to it is if they are putting food into the paper bag...but not even so much cause of the licky finger bag, but more because it would demonstrate a lack of hygiene awareness in a food environment. But when it comes to a bag in the supermarket, I could care less.

Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 17:27

@Sonichu

No, not just the way I want it done, but the way the company want it done!!

If you nearly throw up at this then I can't imagine how you'd ever be able to leave the house, what with all the public toilet doors, seats on public transport, handles on public transport, groceries which have been handled by others, ditto phones, keyboards, and mice, self service checkouts (you might avoid the cashier but how clean do you think those touchscreens are, really?).

Seriously, how do you leave the house if you react that badly to someone licking their finger?

phoenixrosehere · 23/01/2020 17:38

I don’t understand why it’s necessary to lick your fingers to open a bag. I’ve opened plenty of bags of different materials without having to do so. I either use my nails or separate the bag by tugging the sides opposite directions.

Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 17:43

@Lockheart

It’s disgusting, unhygienic and needles simple as that.

I’m mindful when I touch most things in public. As I say, I work in a place where I touch tens of thousands of pounds worth of notes daily. There’s not many things dirtier so I make sure I never touch my face or put my hand to my mouth until I’ve washed them. I wouldn’t eat something until I’d washed my hands either.

It’s not that hard to follow a few basic steps

Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 17:46

Also regarding public toilets. No I don’t sit on the seat. I hover! I try not to touch many things and I wash my hands thoroughly afterwards and cringe touching the door to leave as I know some people don’t follow the save rules and will walk out without washing their hands.

Same reason I wouldn’t eat peanuts from a bowl in a bar

@Chocowoka I never said it was nice, I said I wonder how you cope in day to day life if seeing a cashier lick their fingers to open a bag almost makes you sick.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 23/01/2020 17:59

I was at McDonald’s last week to redeem one of their freebies (I don’t typically go) and was a bit put off to see staff assembling burgers and wraps with their bare hands. They were also doing things like juggling packaging boxes etc. Seemed a bit unprofessional but I guess it’s McDonald’s after all

Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 18:04

@Lockheart

I mean, it’s a term of phrase. It’s vile

I dont like people handing me money retrieved from their bra, socks, a dirty hanky or a wallet that is attached to a chain and gets pulled out from somewhere under their joggers but it has all happened. I dont like serving customers with snot running down their nose, or food stuck in their beard but it has happened. I don't like serving customers who stink and I especially dont like serving the customer who doesn't wear a belt or underwear and every single time he lets go of his trousers they fall down so we all see his todger dangling.

People are just fucking minging.

Fishcakey · 23/01/2020 18:08

Yep. Money is filthy. Their hands must be awash with germs. Yuk.

MissPoldark · 23/01/2020 18:10

Lol at first world issues

Oh, that old cliched chestnut.

Did you know OP, you’re just not allowed to complain about anything or expect any improvements to be made anywhere as someone somewhere always has a worse problem Confused

HaudMaDug · 23/01/2020 18:31

I hear ya @Chocowoka.
Can't stand the thought of other folks fluids near my food but god knows what we've all ingested over the years. Not killed us yet.
I have to go wash my hands after counting cash as the thought of whats growing on our bank notes and change gives me the boak.
Felt it yesterday in the queue at the petrol station watching the guy in front of me trying to sort money from his pocket and holding a used £20 in his teeth.

Rosebel · 23/01/2020 18:59

Do you eat the bag? If not why does it matter? Take items from your bag and wash your hands, job done.

Namestranger · 23/01/2020 19:03

I was nearly sick and thought how disgusting is that

Seems pretty ott. No one on the website ever seems to go just "Ew", everything is always VILE or DISGUSTING Xmas Grin

RealBecca · 23/01/2020 19:06

You aren't licking the bag and presumably are washing your hands after a shop. Gross yrs, but not like you are at any mire risk than from touching the trolley

Neverender · 23/01/2020 19:09

Lol sorry...I can't post what I'm thinking...

Oh actually, bollocks to it. Do you realise that every single adult hand you ever shake has probably had a dick in it at some point?!

I'll just leave this here...

Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 19:17

@MissPoldark

You’ve got the nail on the head there. Think if we all had to live by that rule on here, 95% off the stuff posted could be considered first world problems. It’s never more true than in NM.

Also totally agree with what you say about the 50% of people that are cool with it 🤢🤮

OP posts:
Chocowoka · 23/01/2020 19:19

@Neverender

Presumably washed several times though eh...

Jennywren2978 · 23/01/2020 19:23

Yes I find it gross. There is a shop assistant in my local co-op who does it all the time. I now avoid going to their till if they are working that day. Luckily they have recently installed self service checkouts so I now use those to avoid the finger licking staff members. Though it does make me wonder about what they may have touching the shop floor with their saliva covered fingers. Bleurgh 🤢

BunnytheBlueWhale · 23/01/2020 19:25

I just think licking fingers to turn pages etc is so unnecessary and unhygienic anyway

Neverender · 23/01/2020 19:43

Chocowoka presumably...one can hope...

ColourMyDreams · 23/01/2020 20:01

My groceries are usually packaged so any contamination on the bag isn't in contact with them.
I take my own bags anyway.
You know, your handbags probably carry more bacteria than any finger licked carrier.
