I went to a convenience shop today during my lunch break (think co-op but it’s not, still quite a big company though) to pick up a meal deal and a few other bits for lunch. I hadn’t been to this one in particular before although I do go to one near where I live all the time.

I walked in and it was relatively quiet. When I approached the counter to pay I was served by a staff member who was a young lady (young 20’s I would say). She did not acknowledge me or say hello as she was in the middle of what I can only describe as a heated discussion with another staff member. It seemed as though she was complaining about something to her colleagues.

As she was scanning my items I asked her for a carrier bag, she didn’t acknowledge this. When she finished scanning the items, I again asked for a carrier bag but she was too busy talking to her colleague to hear me. Once I had paid, I again asked her for a carrier bag to which she said “oh sorry it’s been a stressful day”. I was then stood waiting for my receipt as she had forgotten to give it to me. At this point she was still talking to her colleague and then realised I was still stood waiting. She looked up and said to me “ok?” I said “yes please can I have my receipt?” to which she said “oh yes okay”.

She then decided to look through the receipt as she realised that I’d been charged extra for the meal deal. I had paid £6 instead of £3.50, not a massive deal just a tad bit annoying. (the drink I had chosen was in the meal deal section but not actually part of the deal). I appreciate it was nobody’s fault in this instance but I do believe had she been concentrating on the till when she was scanning the items (instead of talking to her colleague) then she would of picked up on this.

I got the impression from her that she thought it was my fault for picking up the wrong drink. When I pointed out that the drink was in the wrong section and it’s very confusing for customers she just shrugged her shoulders. She then asked me to choose another drink and that she would get her colleague to sort out the refund. I did decline at this point as I’d just had enough and wanted to leave. I really didn’t have the energy to wait around for her colleague to refund me and sort it all out especially since I had to be back in work for a certain time and needed to eat my lunch before then anyway.

What should of been an easy transaction actually turned into a stressful experience. I have worked in customer facing roles myself many years ago and imo a staff member should devote their attention when serving a customer. I have no issue with people chatting away with their colleagues but when it’s to the point they can’t hear anything the customer has said to them (3 times) then I think there is an issue. If she wanted to discuss (more so complain) to her colleague she should of done that in private or at least discretely (not so the whole bloody shop could hear). The mere fact that I had to ask for a carrier bag three times is I think what annoyed me the most.

If I had behaved that way in my last job I would have been pulled up on it. I appreciate we’re all human and every one has problems but surely they should be left at the door before coming into work? I don’t think customers should have to hear how stressful the day has been. I wouldn’t complain to my clients about my stresses so I do think it should be the same in any work place.

I promise I’m not one of these people that complains about everything! I think I’ve only made a complaint about one company before and that was because they lost a £300 deposit of mine.

So WIBU to make a complaint? Was she unprofessional? Imo this particular lady would hugely benefit from extra training in how to serve/deal with customers.

starlight83x · 22/01/2020 21:16

Well how would I ask her that @MrsLinManuelMiranda when she was clearly ignoring me?

Go on insult a few more people, in fairness you're entitled you've had such a stressful day.... you sound totally irrational with a massive chip of your shoulder! She was so rude to ME 😭 I'd take homemade sandwiches in future the buying lunch stress is just too much for you!

spongejack · 22/01/2020 21:21

Oh no you've now got a headache from is!! Of the stress you poor thing.

A headache and stress all in one day, take a days sick leave tomorrow you deserve it after the day you've had.

Inconspicuousname · 22/01/2020 21:21

@starlight83x laughing at some of these posts.

I read your full post and personally could not give a shit if she was having a bad day tbh either...you're giving her money for a service, not to be ignored. It would bloody annoy me too.

LoveNote · 22/01/2020 21:23

wow that's such a long post! was kind of waiting for the issue to become apparent....

ims0rrydarlin · 22/01/2020 21:23

Okay so you say she didn’t say hello or acknowledge you, but did you say hello to her?

Sonichu · 22/01/2020 21:24

"Anyway I'm off as your all giving me a headache and I'm trying to eat my spag boll. Ta-ra!"

This thread didn't really go the way you expected did it OP?

MrsLinManuelMiranda · 22/01/2020 21:26

I didn't make a mistake though did I? She didn't notice the error because she was too busy chatting away
How could she notice the error? The cashier scans the items, she is not expected to check the price of each item as it goes through the checkout. Could you imagine how long the average weekly shop would take to scan if the cashier had to look at her screen after each item to see if the price looked correct( assuming that they had previously memorised the price of all of the goods for sale, not to mention every meal deal, BOGOF and other offers.)

G3m81 · 22/01/2020 21:31

I work as a manager for one of the big four and I honestly can't believe you'd just pay on your card with the card reader not working properly! They could have overcharged you and you would have had no idea! Another point I'd make is if the display on the card reader is blank I'd be amazed if the transaction would actually go through but that's another story.....

Boireannachlaidir · 22/01/2020 21:32

Meal deals are a crap concept anyway. You should have checked what was in the deal before going to the checkout. This is entirely your own doing. And you don't need a new bag for a meal deal either. YABU.

Hope you're taking leftover spagbol in for lunch tomorrow OP.

Ontheboardwalk · 22/01/2020 22:34

starlight83x because you could have just said you had a, honestly not much of an issue and very much down to you, in a shop that WASN'T the co-op but you named them in your post

MintyMabel · 22/01/2020 22:47

behave yourself

🙄 Are you 12?

She couldn't have known when ringing it up. If you'd been paying attention you would have known when you paid. But apparently you just hand over the payment without checking the amount. That's idiotic.

Bloomburger · 23/01/2020 06:44

I'm amazed you took the time to type out the story of what was effectively a non event.

Insideimsprinting · 23/01/2020 07:31

Your giving her money for a service not to be ignored.

Your giving her money for the items you ant to buy. The proportion of that money that covers wages is pennies on what op bought. The profit margin won't be huge, no matter what shop your in.
Op spent £6, had never been to that one before and isn't likely to go back in a hurry. Staff know regulars and big spenders.

I also know from experience that things happen at work and the issue the staff were dealing with may have been a much bigger issue to the store than one customer spending a small amount who has never been in before ad probably won't be back.

Of course she should have paid more attention but in the grand scheme of things other than her being pre occupied no real offence was caused just irritation. Service levels in stores is minimal I own one you smile, be polite, helpful and serve. It doesn't take a lot for that to wobble.

OldEvilOwl · 23/01/2020 07:59

I don't know why your getting such a hard time on here OP. I probably wouldn't bother complaining though, I would maybe have said something at the time instead. She was rude and unprofessional, she is being paid to do a job not chat

starlight83x · 23/01/2020 08:15

Thanks @OldEvilOwl - as long as people are on minimum wage and are up at 6am they can do whatever they want apparently Hmm I always laugh as well when posters say "you have no idea what's going on in that persons life" .... so I must assume that every person who has/is rude to me has experienced an awful tragedy that day Confused I wasn't expecting the woman to polish my bloody shoes, just concentrate on what she was doing (which is yano, what she's getting paid for).

Anyway, no harm done but I definitely won't be visiting that store again thanks to her. If she carries on that way they'll have no customers Grin

Yep, the ins and outs of the meal deal are one thing...the rudeness is quite another

spongejack · 23/01/2020 08:51

How's your headache this morning @starlight83x ?

Biancadelrioisback · 23/01/2020 10:30

OP, many people couldn't give a shiny shit if the staff are a bit rude. If they've very rude ie arguing with customers, insulting them etc then yes, that's different.

You picked the wrong items.
You didn't notice the total before paying (I'm not buying the bullshit that you just blindly paid)

starlight83x · 23/01/2020 11:00

And I don't expect people to care @Biancadelrioisback ...... obviously yes arguing with a customer and insulting them is awful but I do think ignoring a customer the entire time whilst serving them is not great either. I really didn't care about the drink tbh, it was more so her attitude.

OP posts:
starlight83x · 23/01/2020 11:01

I really couldn't care less if you buy the "bullshit" btw Grin your a stranger to me why the hell would I care?
