How much tidying do you do on a normal work day?

Ashtower · 21/01/2020 16:30

On an average day I will:

plump the sofa, fold blankets etc
hoover living room and hallway (muddy hairy dog)
dishes x2
sweep
mop (every other day)
wipe down surfaces
pick up crap off the floor as I go along

I feel like everyone else does much less yet my house is still far from perfect.

Dh and I will also do a deeper clean at the weekends. We alternate upstairs and downstairs.

I would get a cleaner in but I'm not keen on strangers in my personal space,

BrimfulofSasha · 21/01/2020 16:44

I guess the dog impacts the floor cleaning but I'd say everything else is pretty bare bones house chores.

I hoover 1-2 times a week and mop floors.
We generally just tidy as we go.
Clutter put back away at the end of each day, beds made, kitchen and bathroom wiped down, dishwasher loaded, unloaded. etc

Bluebutterfly90 · 21/01/2020 16:48

I try to do at least ten minutes of tidying a day, simply because when I get up to do my 'ten minutes' it quickly turns into half an hour or an hour because of what I want to get done.

I always make sure the kitchen is tidy, which is a never ending job- but I can't relax if the kitchen is a state.
Hoovering we do as and when it looks like it needs doing so that really depends.

VenusOfWillendorf · 21/01/2020 16:51

Wash up after dinner
Hoover the kitchen (I've a cordless and kitchen is tiny - this takes under a minute - but makes me feel virtuous)
Ironing once a week, as I resent spending time at the weekends on it
Laundry when it needs doing
Everything else is done on Saturday mornings.

thepeopleversuswork · 21/01/2020 16:52

I am a lone parent to an 8 year old and work FT so have a cleaner who comes once a fortnight.

As a general rule every work day I wash and dry up (twice)
surface clean the living room (removing large items and clearing the table)
clear discarded clothes from mine and my DD's bedroom floor
Wipe surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom and clean the loo if necessary.

Unless anything is particularly filthy the rest has to wait to weekends. My flat is usually a tip by the end of the fortnight before the cleaner comes but I have too much else on my plate to stress too much over this as long as I know its clean enough to survive in.

BelfastNonBlonde · 21/01/2020 16:53

Tidy up the living room and kitchen in morning before I leave for work, fix sofa cushions (bane of my life..), maybe quick hoover kitchen living room if needs it

Tidy kitchen after dinner

Hang up washing if done

Everything else waits til weekend..

Bare minimum during week thanks!!

ShirleyPhallus · 21/01/2020 16:54

Pretty much zero.

I make the bed and make dinner, DP loads the dishwasher and does the bins.

Maybe a load of laundry or two.

Otherwise we have a cleaner. She’s amazing.

LakieLady · 21/01/2020 16:59

Dirty washing into laundry basket.

Clean washing put away.

Pull duvet up so bed looks "made".

Dishes in dishwasher, empty dishwasher & put away if full of clean stuff.

Wipe down kitchen surfaces.

Clean bathroom basin, spray shower, squirt lav cleaner down the bog (hard water, limescale builds up if not done daily).

Hoover sitting room and kitchen floors (inc picking up crap that ends up on the living room floor).

That just about keeps it semi-presentable, enough so I don't die of shame if someone comes round.

Funny though, it seems like quite a lot when it's written down.

NaomifromMilshake · 21/01/2020 17:04

More than the other inmates.

Supersimkin2 · 21/01/2020 17:07
  • air bed
  • plump sofa
  • clean loo
-washing on
  • wash up 2x, shiny sink
  • hoover 2x week, wash floors x 1 week
  • bloody hang bloody things up all the bloody time
  • hide clean washing in cupboards as required.

Once a week I grab a bin bag and tour the property, stop only when it's full. Does the trick.

HopefullyAnonymous · 21/01/2020 17:12

Nothing more than washing the days pots, maybe a load of washing. Can’t see what the need would be for anything more.

Kim82 · 21/01/2020 17:20

On a work day I’ll tidy my bed, do a load of washing, tidy round the living room, fold and put away any clean washing, clean the kitchen and load the dishwasher in the evening, Hoover 3 times a week and wipe over the bathroom if I think it needs it (not every day). I might tidy the youngest’s bedroom if it’s a mess.

IsAnybodyListening · 21/01/2020 17:24

Make beds
Tidy sofa
Wipe down Kitchen
Make dinner
Wash dinner up (this is Dps job!!!!)
Washing in/out
Clean cat bowls every other day and tray three times a week
Hoover 3 evenings a week
Clean loo daily
Pick clothing up from EVERYWHERE
Pick shoes up from EVERYWHERE

VeganCow · 21/01/2020 17:26

Vacuum everywhere every day (cordless vac 6 days then proper vac 1 day a week (have lots of animals so need to really)
Clean loo every day (keep a spray in there, do it with loo roll, takes seconds)
Bath and shower screen few times a week (takes a minute with a damp microfibre cloth)
Sink most days when cleaning teeth at night, takes seconds.
Kitchen wipe down constantly as using it so nothing ever builds up. microwave wipe out each time its used.

dusting, whenever I notice it [grin} then do every room. Only takes 10 mins or so to do.

Washing put away soon as its dry, and I wash about 5 times a week. I only iron shirts everything else gets a stretch and fold then put away. I find if it is taken out of the washer (don't overload it) immediately and hung to dry, noting really creases anyway.

ThatThereWoman · 21/01/2020 17:29

I have a cleaner twice a week.

In the morning I generally empty the dishwasher, put a load of washing in, empty the drier. Reload the dishwasher Wash down the sides, sweep the floor. Take any random crap upstairs. I may swish the loo and the washbasin while I'm in the bathroom. Leave the house at 8.30.

When I'm home after dinner I'll tidy the kitchen again, reload the dishwasher and then sit down all evening.

If I'm wfh (once or twice a week), I'll hoover and mop the floors (including the stairs) and have a tidy of the living areas.

On a Friday I (or the kids) strip beds ready for the cleaner.

Andonandonan · 21/01/2020 17:41

Just tidy & clean the kitchen really.

We have a cleaner once a week and everyone in the house is pretty well-trained in tidying as they go so there’s never really much else that needs doing. Everything has a home so it’s easy for stuff to be put away.

I sweep the floors every other day or so (as they need it).

NotYourTypicalNerd · 21/01/2020 17:46

Empty dishwasher from the night before
Tidy up the bathroom from sons the night before!
Washing load on a timer so it doesn't sit wet while at work
Clear breakfast stuff and put the dishwasher on again!
Pull beds duvets
work
Washing in dryer/out
Empty dishwasher
Hoover each day/mop x 2 per week
Tidy surfaces and hang up school bags
Clear up after dinner
Dishwasher on
Toilets and bathrooms get a wipe down and clean while DD in shower
Clean washing put away while DD getting ready for bed

It looks a lot but really doesn't take that long at all. This pretty much keeps on top of it all! Other bits like wiping down the cupboards or emptying the kitchen bin, I will do while the kettle is boiling, for example. The fridge is cleaned out before the weekly shop. Oh, and I never iron! DH does his shirts. Bathroom bins done when full.

lotsofoysters · 21/01/2020 17:50

You mop every other day?
I mop my kitchen floor once every other month, if that Blush
I have a crawling baby, I figure germs are good for her immune system.

ShirleyPhallus · 21/01/2020 17:51

@NotYourTypicalNerd I hope your “d” H is doing more than just ironing his shirts from that list!

Fizzypoo · 21/01/2020 17:58

I don't really do a lot.

I cook once or twice - DC wash up and put away.

I clear up my mess in the living room - laptops/papers ect. I don't always a make a mess.

I save my cleaning for Saturday morning. If I could be arsed to clean in the week so I had Saturday morning free I would, but I can't.

isabellerossignol · 21/01/2020 18:02

I don't do much, but then I don't do all that much at any given time because we just do things little by little as we go along.

On a typical weekday when we've been at work we'll empty the dishwasher, load it as and when we use stuff, do the dishes, wipe down the kitchen worktop and clean the sink, make the beds, maybe put a load of washing on if needed, and possibly hoover a bit if the cat has left a lot of hair behind. That's all really. But it's only ten minutes or so in total.

PontiacBandit · 21/01/2020 18:08

I don't spend ages tidying away but I've got into a routine of putting stuff away as I go. The kids have to tidy up their stuff every night including the bathroom, I hate stuff being left out. We all stack the dishwasher as we go. One of us puts it on when it's full, DH or will empty it whilst waiting for the kettle to boil or getting breakfast ready.
As long as surfaces are clear it looks tidy, cleaning every week isn't too bad then.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 21/01/2020 18:14

Morning- bring the dinner dishes into the kitchen. We are lazy Grin

After work- load the dishwasher, load the dryer, load the washing machine. Make lounge nice for relaxing in. Wipe down kitchen surfaces. Return any towels to the bathroom. Another tumble dryer load if needed.

Weekends - vacuum. More laundry. Beds stripped. Clean clothes away. Clean bathroom. Mop floors.

Collision · 21/01/2020 18:15

Just moved house so boys are now in charge of their own rooms including bringing washing down for me to do.

I tend to empty the dishwasher, put a wash on, hoover if necessary.

But I do tidy up every evening so it’s nice in the morning.

NotYourTypicalNerd · 21/01/2020 18:19

@ShirleyPhallus Not really. He will do a load of washing if needed on the weekends. The dishwasher I do whilst waiting for the kettle to make DH and I a coffee at both ends of the day. The bathrooms take two seconds to squirt some bleach and wipe around - in the AM I gather up the clothes and towels from sons and throw them in the wash basket. The wash basket then comes downstairs where I am going anyway and into the washer and put on timer while the kids are eating. Beds take two seconds when I go upstairs to help DD get ready. Kids take their breakfast stuff to the kitchen so I pop it in the dishwasher while making my 'commute coffee mug'!
Dryer takes seconds then I have to be upstairs for DD anyway at bedtime - and we have a system of baskets so everyones clean washing goes into their baskets and they put it away themselves - I fold towels etc but it is literally five mins to do that and deliver baskets! Dinner stuff takes only 5 mins to sort and clean and wipe up.
DH gets up at 7.45, then shower and out the door. Back at half six. I get the kids and myself up at 7, chivvy sons out the door for 7.45, then dd and I leave at 8.15. Sons home at 3.30, I work 9-3 so collect DD and get home at 3.45ish.
As I said, it seems a lot, but kinda just works and it doesn't feel like much!
Oh and DH finishes off bedtime for DD with a story :)

Autumnnightsaredrawingin · 21/01/2020 18:20

I work 5 days a week school hours and I will do every day:

A load of washing
Empty and refill dishwasher twice at least (half size!)
Make beds
Clean all kitchen surfaces and table
Cushions etc back on sofa
A general tidy of downstairs, kids room

At the weekend I do all the laundry I haven’t got through during the week, Hoover and do a bigger tidy up. We also have a cleaner once a week.
