To ask how you wake up early?

Nursingnew · 20/01/2020 12:46

I can go sleep early the night before and get 8+ hours of sleep but can never wake up at 5am.
It might be due to it being so dark outside but I just snooze my alarm and get up at 7 when I have to leave for sixth form.
I've even tried a maths alarm however I just restart my phone to get rid of it.
How many hours of sleep do you get?

I get up every day between 0400 - 0430. I just make myself do it; won't allow myself excuses - get out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off, running kit on and out of the door. Easy in the summer, hard in the winter!!

Everything ready the night before so I am good to go. I do go to bed early though around 2200 - 2230 usually!!

Backtoreality1 · 20/01/2020 12:55

Agree with RidgePerfection - you do it because you are a grown up and want to do it. Set the alarm and don't press snooze. Admittedly its easier some days than others, but you soon get used to early starts.

Bluebutterfly90 · 20/01/2020 12:57

I used to set my alarm 5 minutes early, sit up in bed for 5 minutes feeling sorry for myself for having to get up at half five for work, and then force myself to get out of bed.
It did take a lot of willpower- but I never snoozed my alarm as a rule.

Now I have a newborn, sleep is a distant memory anyway!

For more practical advice, maybe look into one of those alarm clocks that gradually lights up to mimic sunlight when your alarm goes off.

BendingSpoons · 20/01/2020 12:57

Thanks to my alarm clock children I have to get up. However pre children I found a sun alarm clock helpful. Although I never aimed to get up earlier than I had to!

Nursingnew · 20/01/2020 13:02

@RidgedPerfection @Backtoreality1 it's because I don't Have to get up. So nothing will happen if I snooze it so I lose motivation to get up but I want to get up so I can get my day started earlier and revise a bit before sixthform to be awake before I go in.

@Bluebutterfly90 @BendingSpoons the Lumie body clock? I might buy that it would be useful ; my biology teacher recommended it

@Nursingnew I don't have to get up that early either - I want to get up that early to go running. I could get up later and still be at work in good time.

Coldilox · 20/01/2020 13:10

I have to get up or I’m late for work. Therefore I get up.

Bloodybridget · 20/01/2020 13:12

If it matters, move your alarm clock (or phone or whatever) away from your bed so you have to get up to turn it off.

ToooRevealing · 20/01/2020 13:13

Why do you need to get up early? If you need to revise are you better doing it the night before? What does getting your day started earlier actually mean? If you're at 6th form you might still be adolescent, needing more sleep ?

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2020 13:16

Please don't get up at 5am to revise; that way madness lies. 7am is a perfectly acceptable time to get up - when I go to work, I often get up later than that. Enjoy your sleep (take it from someone who now gets up at 5am to deal with a hungry baby!)

Nursingnew · 20/01/2020 13:18

@ToooRevealing I like revising at night and taking a nap in the day after sixth form however my parents tell me to revise earlier.

Nursingnew · 20/01/2020 13:20

@mynameiscalypso I used to do it during GCSE'S and it worked for me but clearly not anymore. I'll probably just stick to waking up at 7 am because I probably will be woken up earlier as I grow older and have more responsibilities like u ☺️

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2020 13:24

I've always been on the view that an hour of sleep is worth two hours of revision in terms of the impact on your performance!

Wickedwoo · 20/01/2020 13:24

I wake up between 5 & 5.30 every morning no matter how early or late i go to bed the the night before. This is due to habit after keeping horses for many years. I no longer have any though so would love to sleep longer. I am a proper morning person though

whyamidoingthis · 20/01/2020 13:34

My dd and ds both did this in senior cycle in secondary school (not UK based). They found doing 2 - 2.5 hours of study pre-school to be really helpful. It allowed them a quiet time with no distractions as nobody was contacting them via social media (although phones are left outside the study in our house), no sibling noise etc.

Dd is the most un-morning person you could meet so I was surprised she did it but she wanted to do medicine so needs must. Ds is a bit more of a morning person but less focussed academically but he also needed very good results for his course of choice.

The only way you will manage to get up at that time is to really want to do it. You also need to make sure you are going to bed early - mine tended to go to bed at 9.30 -10 when they were getting up early.

I would suggest writing down a list of reasons why you want to get up early. What are the benefits? What are the drawbacks? Then decide if you are willing to do it. If you are, move your alarm clock out of reach so you can't snooze it and get up as soon as it goes off. It's perfectly simple. Really difficult, but simple.

@mynameiscalypso - Please don't get up at 5am to revise; that way madness lies.

That's nonsense. It works very well for some people, not so much for others.

whyamidoingthis · 20/01/2020 13:39

I like revising at night and taking a nap in the day after sixth form however my parents tell me to revise earlier.

Based on that, it sounds like you don't actually want to get up so really, no point in asking the question.

Cyberlibre · 20/01/2020 13:40

You're a teenager so I don't really think you should be making yourself get up at 5. When I was a teenager I would sleep until the last possible moment. You need more sleep than an adult going to work in my opinion! You've got years to get in to the 'early morning' club (which is rubbish and I still get up as late as possible these days , but I have to be at work by 6:45 so I'm up early because I have to be.

Pinetreesfall · 20/01/2020 13:43

You can borrow my two year old and my 10 month old, they'll get you up at 4.30am no problems. You won't be allowed one more moments peace in bed! Grin

LazJaz · 20/01/2020 13:44

Lumie is good! Also if you are still at school it is likely that your body needs more than 8 hrs a night - many teenagers actually need 9to10 according to sleep scientists - so perhaps you can’t get up because you aren’t ready.
Finally you just need to build the habit up. Can you “reward” Yourself? Or have some kind of penalty in the way? I used to get up early to get to a gym class, and if I missed a certain number I wouldn’t be able to book the classes for a month according to the rules of the gym. I like exercise and enjoyed the classes. The little bit of discipline imposed by the gym was enough to stop me snoozing and just going later. More difficult To do if the reason for getting up is something you aren’t that excited for/can’t get 3rd party discipline but could be something to think about!
Good luck with your exams!

mynameiscalypso · 20/01/2020 13:48

As a culture, we are incredibly bad at prioritising sleep and it's so important to your physical and mental wellbeing.

CakeandCustard28 · 20/01/2020 13:49

I set my alarm and stick it under my bed so I have no choice to get up to turn it off. Never failed me yet! However your only a kid, enjoy the lie ins before life kicks in.

Stickybeaksid · 20/01/2020 13:55

Just get out of bed and stop making excuses.
