To ask how you wake up early?

I can go sleep early the night before and get 8+ hours of sleep but can never wake up at 5am.
It might be due to it being so dark outside but I just snooze my alarm and get up at 7 when I have to leave for sixth form.
I've even tried a maths alarm however I just restart my phone to get rid of it.
How many hours of sleep do you get?

I'd love to be one of those people who gets up ages before work and has a whole morning before even setting off, but I just can't motivate myself to do it. I was pleased with myself this morning for getting up in time to have breakfast before leaving for work.

Really admire people who get themselves up and out to go to the gym at 5am or whatever. There's no chance I could get up that early unless something absolutely forced me to, like an early flight.

When I know I have to get up, I get up.

I have to be up for 2.30am for work 5 days a week. So I do.

I set my alarm anyway, but I’m usually up

If you get up that early you might find yourself flagging by 2pm anyway.

I couldn’t get up at 5am until I had DD and had no choice. Luckily she sleeps in till 6.30. Not everyone can be a morning person so don’t force it.

Why don't you try to gradually move the time earlier? There's a big gap between 5am and 7am, psychologically. Try for a few days at 6.45am, then 6.30am etc.

Having said that, by far the biggest factor is regularity. To get a good night's sleep, you should go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, regardless of whether it's a weekend and so on. Once you have got to a place where you can get up at whatever time you set yourself, make sure you stick with it every day or you'll lose it really easily.

Lastly, make sure that when you get up early you're productive with it. You will easily lose motivation if getting up early means scrolling on your phone for 30 minutes, a lesiurely breakfast, a long slow shower ... Make it easy on yourself by banning phone and technology until you've done X amount of work.

i think 7 is hard enough in the winter, its still dark at 6.45 when i get up and 7 when i get my ds up, as you said as you dont need to be up at 5 its a bit hard to motivate yourself, if you had to make a plane for a holiday you'd make it, but wjen no specific reason not to doze maybe its too hard all at once, try for 6.45 this week promissing yourself the extra 15 mins will be spent on a better breakfast or longer shower, next week try 6.30 and start with 20 minutes study run that for a couple of weeks then add another 15 mins to what you are used to

Get an old fashioned mechanical alarm clock - much louder than battery ones or phone, you can still get them - and put it on the other side of the room so that you have to get out of bed to turn it off.
Some willpower to ensure that you don’t just go back to bed will be needed!

It’s what I used to do when I was working for an airline and sometimes had to get up at 3.30 am.

I don't really believe that you can change your natural circadian rhythms. It's possible to fight against them if you are forced to, but if you have the option, I would never recommend it. I don't think it's healthy - unfortunately modern society means chronic sleep deprivation is basically normal, but that's not a good thing.

Sleep is also incredibly important for learning and I expect you'll be better off getting the hours you need asleep rather than cutting your sleep short to revise more.

I think the thing is if youknow you really have to do it you just do - ie you wont be being paid etc

I find don't turn the alarm off and instead sit up, feet on the floor, stretch turn alarm off stand and go to loo works for me - if I am sleepy quick splash of cold water helps too

I will try to wake up 15 mins before and gradually build it up. I want to do it because it worked for me previously and set a good tone to my day and now I go into college tired and grumpy. I know teens need 8-10 hours of sleep but that's just not possible everyday with so much exams coming up but I definitely need to prioritise tasks. Thank you for all the advice ☺️☺️

100% agree. That's why it's so important to go to bed early if you're getting up early.

Do you have children op? Sorry I was confused with your latest update?!
I only ask because you said you take a nap after school. What time do your kids get up? I would slowly do it 15 minutes earlier but I probably wouldn't aim for 5am as you're already having naps at the moment and you'll feel worse if you are getting up even earlier..

@cyberlibre no no i'm 17. My Dr has just old me i'm infertile so idk i have always just wanted kids and just said to the other mothers ; waking up for my children is one of the best reasons to wake up. However, i fully understand where they are coming from seeing my mum with my little siblings and how tired she is and how hard and draining a mum's life is.

I do it because I kind of like having a roof over my head and food on the table.

The Lumie is brilliant, as that makes it less of an agonizingly soul destroying pain to have to wake up stupid early for work. And getting up earlier makes going to sleep earlier easier.

BUT - believe me, there is no feeling of joy and happiness about being dragged out of sleep after about 35 mins by a screaming baby. Doesn't matter how much you love them, it's horrible if you haven't had enough sleep, such as a couple of sleep cycles or you're woken right in the middle of deep sleep.

Oh, and don't believe your GP. Use contraception.

I've lost count of the number of people (usually young) who have said 'My doctor told me when I was 17 that I wouldn't be able to have children'. They all had kids. Lots of kids, and usually had the first aged around 17-19.

@MitziK ahh yeah I get it, it would be very annoying especially when u have just about got to sleep and the get woken up. & i really hope I do its just I've only had 3 menstrual cycles naturally before I was put on the pill but now I'm off it I'll see. Thankyou
