To hate the sun shining in the house.

When it’s particularly sunny Or bright I always keep my blinds shut. I cannot stand the sun shining in. I like being outside in the sun but I cannot stand it shining in my house.

OH thinks I’m mad and opens the blinds again (he’s gone to work and home today so I’ve got them shut again). We have black out blinds in front room and kitchen 🤣

He thinks I’m some kind of hermit for not liking it shining in. I prefer the blinds shut when it’s bright and it feels cosier. I prefer it darker anyway.

Aibu to think I can’t be the only one? I absolutely cannot stand the sun shining in.

The way my house faces it shines in badly in the back windows so I tend to keep them shut and keep the front blinds open...

Please tell me I’m not mad!

I don't mind the light coming in into my north facing bedroom as it feels fresh and bright. But in my south facing kitchen I'm not keen on too much light as the glare hurts my eyes and shows the tiniest smear on the glass or dust on the floor. I'd never have those floor to ceiling walls of glass - awful! I don't like to be in darkness but in my kitchen diner the blind goes down but light comes in through the french doors and rooflight but it's not too much and doesn't get in my eyes anywhere in the room.

Sallycinnamum · 20/01/2020 17:04

Me too. I love the sun but hate it in the house. I've always got the blinds closed!

Hagbeth · 20/01/2020 17:13

Sorry I can’t understand that all - I’m the opposite! I love a sunny house ☀️ Smile

Mimilamore · 20/01/2020 18:13

I'm with you, hate the harsh, laser beams of light coming in through the Winter.
I only open my front blinds enough for cat to look out, if she looks down!
I also get puzzled by the comments about rooms being too dark .. Inlive thick walls and cozy spaces but then I do hate people😁

Mimilamore · 20/01/2020 18:15

And I love the Summer and sunshine but outside, unless I suppose I lived in. Wooden house on the beach somewhere...

madcatladyforever · 20/01/2020 18:17

I hate it too, I cannot stand the light, bright and airy brigade, sod that I like dark, goth and mysterious.
The light shows up all the lack of dusting.

JRUIN · 20/01/2020 18:29

A lot of people I know do what you do OP. I'm the opposite and find dark houses depressing. We don't get much sun in the UK so fucked if I'm going to shut it out when it does peek out. YABU.

TheSandgroper · 21/01/2020 02:07

I don’t like the smell of friends houses that never allow the sun in.

lboogy · 21/01/2020 02:24

I had no idea people like you existed. YABU

madcatladyforever · 21/01/2020 02:28

If I want light I'll go outside.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/01/2020 02:32

What I hate and gets me down is “nothing weather” neither bright and sunny or dark and rainy, my house when the sun is shining looks bright and welcoming, in dark rainy weather it feels cosy and the colours of my furnishings really stand out, I really hate grey nothing weather and that’s is what we get mostly in this country.

Casualbride · 21/01/2020 02:43

I hate it too especially in sodding January. It’s supposed to be dark in January ffs.

Starksforthewin · 21/01/2020 02:47

I’m with you OP.

Windows open for fresh air winter and summer but blinds down if it is too bright. I fucking hate being blinded by the sun, indoors or outdoors!

echt · 21/01/2020 03:03

I love the sun shining into my house, the only problem is controlling it as being in Australia I need to keep rooms cool in summer so go round lowering external blinds and pulling curtains to.

I agree the sun shows the dirty windows but have given up on this as any rain from east and north brings sand from the desert and voila! windows are dirty again.

Purpleartichoke · 21/01/2020 03:09

I always open all the curtains when it is overcast or raining and close them up right when there is sun.

ChicChicChicChiclana · 21/01/2020 03:13

I love the sun and blue skies in winter. I open the curtains the instant I get up. I would find it impossible to live with some of you!

And while I love my Mediterranean summer holidays I'd hate to live permanently somewhere where shutters are the norm/essential because of the heat.

Genehuntssexyhands · 21/01/2020 03:17

I like the brightness but hate that it shows all the bloody dust!

kateandme · 21/01/2020 03:21

i know someone like this but just in her bedroom mostly.but sometimes when she is feeling a ceertain way she will like the curtains closed as she feels safer.she says it makes her feel a little more settled.but in one room(her yellow room) she loves the sun shining in their and will often go and lie on the bed with the sun on.but in her own room she has the cutain closed.she has been through stuff though and i think she feels vulnerable nd exposed with the curtains opened in there.
slightly different to you and other op reasons though i think.but i get it.

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 21/01/2020 03:26

I like it dark too. I almost always have my blinds closed in the living room. The brightness of the sun gives me migraine anyway.

Casino218 · 21/01/2020 04:36

YABU. YesterdayI laid on the bed. The sun was warm streaming through the bedroom windows. I shut my eyes and for 15 minutes I was transported to a sun lounger by a pool in a hot country. It was fab.

MashedSpud · 21/01/2020 04:52

I love it. My cat loves it. My plants love it.

whatswithtodaytoday · 21/01/2020 05:11

How incredibly weird that so many people agree! I open curtains as soon as possible in the morning, and don't even shut them downstairs because I like to see the street lights at night and hate it being dark when I go downstairs in the morning. Dark houses make me feel claustrophobic.

Shev1996 · 21/01/2020 05:16

I spent a couple of weeks in the sun last month, spent as much time in it as possible. But at home I close the blinds every chance I get when hubby opens them, i like lights on and sunlight out in my home... not sure why 😂

Tumbleweed101 · 21/01/2020 06:13

I’m the opposite - I like the rooms to have sun. Forgot to open my curtains in bedroom the other day when went on early shift in dark and had to
open them for the remaining hour of
daylight when I got home so the
room had had some light!

WorldEndingFire · 21/01/2020 06:31

Could be an opportunity to get some spectacular house plants that enjoy full sun to block and filter the light from the room a bit and to provide interest. I would love to have a window like this!
