This is in the wrong section, and don't be daft. If there were any truly safe and effective magic bullets to lose weight then we'd all know about it.

Diet safely and normally if you feel you need to lose weight.

AriadnesFilament · 19/01/2020 10:13

Don’t touch them with a barge pole

Retroflex · 19/01/2020 10:23

"Diet pills" are so dangerous! It would be risking your life for what? Hmm

Cynthie · 19/01/2020 10:36

No, but I have treated patients who they left with irreversible organ failure.

SnorkMaiden81 · 19/01/2020 10:37

When you say 'diet pills' which are you talking about?

Supplements? Appetite suppressants? Fat binders?

stripeypillowcase · 19/01/2020 10:41

are you looking for fat binders?
they are working by making you get the squids when you eat too much fat.

or fibre pills?
they work by making you feel full.

anything else is illegal as far as I know.

the best 'fix' is to have a good look at your diet (including your drinks!) and making small but sustainable changes.

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 10:49

I am currently taking Orlistat and Metformin. But I am still struggling to lose weight. I assume they are not dangerous or I wouldn't have been prescribed them but willing to be corrected. I have gained weight due to medication. I just wanted to see if they had helped anyone else and any tips to help them work. I also not sure if the doses can go up to help more.

Please don’t take anything unregulated. Have you significantly reduced your calorie intake?

ZaZathecat · 19/01/2020 10:52

I dabbled with diet pills from a special slimming doctor Inthe 80s. He was later struck off and it turned out to be speedhe was peddling. Luckily I only tried it for a few weeks. (Lost a bit of weight and found myself cleaning the oven at midnight!

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 10:53

@Cynthie - what diet pills was that?
@stripeypillowcase - they don't seem to give me diarrhoea - so are they doing anything? You have to eat a low fat diet with them. When you say small and sustainable changes - what would you suggest? I've never had to lose weight before so really don't know what exactly would help.

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 10:56

@puds11 - I was on a special diet but I ended up stopping it as I couldn't face eating the same food every week. What is the best way to reduce my calorie intake?

OP posts:
MGC31 · 19/01/2020 10:57

Work out your individual calorie requirements (ie. your BMR) at the weight you’re at now, then reduce it and make sure you’re eating less than that everyday.

MGC31 · 19/01/2020 10:59

What did you eat and drink yesterday OP? Portion sizes etc? People can suggest where you might be able to make changes?

ScottishBadger · 19/01/2020 10:59

Do you have pcos? Depending on metformin reason you might need to alter what you eat to make it effective

puds11 · 19/01/2020 11:03

@UndertheCedartree I use My Fitness Pal. You put in how much you’re looking to loose and it calculates your daily calories in take required in order to loose the amount in a healthy way. You log all your calories in the app and it tells you when you are at or exceeding the amount.

If you do it I would start by setting a goal of maybe half a stone to get used to it and not overwhelm yourself. You can also log your exercise on there. Are you able to exercise?

I’ve lost nearly 3 stone since August using it. I don’t calorie count at the weekend and still eat chocolate Grin

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 11:06

@MGC31 - porridge (sachet type) and glass of smoothie, hot cross bun, apple, filled pasta (ricotta and spinach) (half pack) with tomato sauce and mozarella with asparagus, several coffees and a couple of chocolate coins.

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 11:07

@ScottishBadger - I don't have pcos. How would I alter my diet to make it effective?

OP posts:
stripeypillowcase · 19/01/2020 11:08

one easy small change could be only having half a glass of orange juice with breakfast instead of a full one.
or replacing white with whole meal pasta or rice.
or not having any snacks, but having the snack type food as part of your meal.
or looking at portions by visualising a toddler plate: big compartment for steamed veg, the smaller ones for meat&sauce and rice/pasta/potato.

many many more.

and really do look at writing down everything you eat and drink for a week and figure out where you can make a small change that can be easily done by you.

TheFastandTheCurious · 19/01/2020 11:10

The pasta, chocolate and hot criss buns will be very calorific, start by ditching them. Do you not eat any veg?

TheFastandTheCurious · 19/01/2020 11:10

And the smoothies are full of sugar, just eat a piece of fruit instead

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 11:11

@puds11 - that sounds good, thank you. Great it has worked for you. Yes, I do exercise. I usually go to the gym once or twice a week and do a sports session once a week. I walk a fair bit on a couple of days when I do the school run.

OP posts:
aroundtheworldyet · 19/01/2020 11:14

How much have you got to lose?
Are you genuinely counting every single calorie?
Because the odd scrape of butter. Blob of mayo all adds up.

I would strongly recommended getting one of those plates which has portion control on it. I know they look like they’re for children. But if you’re struggling. It might be a lot to do with portion control and snacking?

aroundtheworldyet · 19/01/2020 11:14

And do myfitness pal

puds11 · 19/01/2020 11:16

@UndertheCedartree it’s free to download so give it a whirl! I think if you can reduce your calorie intake and continue with the exercise you will definitely see a result. Just don’t look for it in the mirror! I really struggle to ‘see’ the difference, but can feel it in the clothes I wear.

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 11:16

@stripeypillowcase - thank you for the advise - it is very helpful.
@TheFastandTheCurious - yes I do eat veg - I had pasta with spinach yesterday and also ate asparagus. I'm going to have peas, carrots and cabbage today.

I do think I eat less veg than I used to as my DD is so fussy I don't often make veg based meals like vegetable lasagne as she won't eat it.
