OP rather than cutting back on sugary treats, you may actually find it easier to try cutting them out completely for a few weeks and see how you get on. I lost quite a lot of weight that way a few years ago, but sadly as I reintroduced sugar it crept back on, so from January 1st I've cut out all added sugar ( bar alcohol). I feel better - it is hard I won't lie - and I can enjoy everything else.

Runningonempty84 · 19/01/2020 20:42

That's a good point. Cutting out sugar completely will make a huge difference.

And apologies if I've missed it upthread, but do you drink? I wasn't overweight to start with - and didn't drink much anyway- but in the months after I stopped drinking I lost half a stone without even trying...

@runningonempty - you're not reading what I said Isaid most days I have something like popcorn (under 100kcal), weetabix (under 100kcal) or a chocolate bar (250kcal) Can you see where it says 'or' I don't eat chocolate everyday so not hard to hear something that is not true!

You also told me I don't exercise most days when I have said I do. So again not hard to hear! You could have suggested other exercise instead of saying that no I don't exercise most days when I do. You also miss that I do the gym and sports session bust just focus on the walking!

I did lose a modest amount of weight taking Sibutramine, the brand name was Reductil. They've since been banned as were discovered to increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. What I would say is, the tablets worked but they don't give you the willpower. I found as an emotional eater I still had days where I overate. I've also tried Orlistat, brand name Xenical (half strength version is called Alli and available over the counter). These I had little success with as tended to abuse them by eating fatty foods and taping the Orlistat to cheat. Side effects were nasty and required carrying spare underwear with me wherever I went. I managed to lose 10st with the Cambridge Diet and that was sheer willpower, unfortunately I've since gained back most of the weight. I think that the best way is diet and exercise, no points or syns just good old fashioned calorie counting and eating clean, cutting out snacks and junk. I'm currently joined up to Team RH Fitness and they are fab.

@rookiemere - thanks for the advice. Can I ask did you include fruit in that? Was it generally obvious things or was there things you cut out with 'hidden sugar' that I might not realise? I'm a bit limited during the week due to being in hospital but can give it a good go and completely cut out at weekends.

@Runningonempty84 - no I don't usually drink although I had a couple of Baileys at Christmas.

@Becclescake - what do you mean 'taping the Orlistat to cheat'. I've not had any nasty side effects but I've tried to stick to a low fat diet as recommended. Glad you have found something that has worked for you!

@UndertheCedartree sorry that was a typo, meant taking not taping Grin. Basically allowing myself more rubbish and taking the tablets to cheat. Ridiculous I know Blush. I'm only a couple of weeks in with Team RH so I'll have to see how it goes. Are you having difficulty losing weight? Perhaps change up your exercise routine. Weight bearing exercises help burn more calories at rest, maybe incorporate some of those?

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 21:26

I have read the metformin is helpful in being able to keep the weight off against diet and exercise - but I think it is early stages for research into metformin as a weight loss aid. However they obviously see something in it if they are prescribing it for those with weight gain after going on psychiatric meds. Weight gain is such a common side effect I'm glad there is help to fight it.

@Becclescake Grin - sorry I thought it was something special you were doing to the pill! It's not ridiculous - you were obviously struggling. I have been losing weight but very slowly. I will have a look at weight baring exercise, thank you.

Underthecedartree no I haven't cut out fruit, but I don't eat a huge amount of fruit anyway. I find on low/no sugar I don't get hunger pangs as much. That said this time round I'm not losing weight so quickly and I do think I need to cut back on carbs a bit - have been bringing sandwiches in for lunch as a bit broke at the minute.

UndertheCedartree · 19/01/2020 21:54

@rookiemere - thank you

Confused as to what circumstances would prevent you from weighing your food? Even if you're sure you know portion sizes there's no harm in double checking. You're only going to lose weight in a calorie deficit. You can only be sure that you are in a calorie deficit if you measure EVERYTHING.

Didn’t you read the thread jogging? She’s an inpatient in hospital. Food is from a set menu in a canteen.

@ZaZathecat

I dabbled with diet pills from a special slimming doctor Inthe 80s. He was later struck off and it turned out to be speedhe was peddling. Luckily I only tried it for a few weeks. (Lost a bit of weight and found myself cleaning the oven at midnight!
I think we must have gone to the same doctor. Him and his wife held clinics in a number of local towns, but this was in the early to mid 2000's. I only took them for 3 months before my thyroid packed in. I have never been well since
