People keep breaking my toilet seats

I am having a final straw moment AngryBlush

Is this just how toilet seats are? Or is everyone else inconsiderate?

My DC are small built but for some reason in every house we have ever lived in and every toilet they have somehow managed to break or skew the fixings of toilet seats. I have had to repair more toilet seats in my life than surely is normal

I have 2 toilets now that have fixings that you screw into the bowl and then you place the sweat on to 2 pegs. Whenever I go into the toilet and go to sit down, the toilet seat is loose. My mum does this to my toilet and my DC.

This is happening at our place too

Barbie222 · 19/01/2020 11:36

I think it's when little ones try to scramble up. How old are your dc and do they have a step?

Menora · 19/01/2020 11:37

I can’t buy a toilet seat that has fixings that go though a hole to be tightened up underneath the pan as the whole toilet is attached to the wall. It’s wall mounted and has no area I can access the standard thread fittings.

Reaching round for bog roll is madness, I hate it. Move the holder or have a free to roam toilet roll.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 19/01/2020 11:43

Maybe you have faulty washer things it tightens to?

We have similar loo and had to get new connecting fittings from the plumbing supply store (Cost $8) and haven’t had anymore issues. (It’s the stupid plastic washers you pop through with the plastic tabs instead of old fashioned copper or steel!)

Menora · 19/01/2020 11:43

The issue is the whole toilet is fitted to the centre of a tiled wall 😂
It’s also built into the wall

There isn’t a lot I can do even re the toilet roll. It’s on a holder next to the toilet which means you need to reach behind you slightly. On one side the wall is too far away from the toilet for a roll holder and the other side is a door

I need to go find somewhere that sells the fittings now as I have dropped one into the base of the cistern and I can’t get it back out. I am off to Wickes to start with. I don’t want to order a seat online if it isn’t going to fit

A whole Sunday wasted on a bloody toilet Angry

Maybe something like this would help? I’ve never used them so can’t comment on how good they are though. Cheap enough to give a whirl though.

how are those fixture points attached?

MrsSpenserGregson · 19/01/2020 11:48

OMG I have the same problem OP. We have 3 toilets in our house (but only one bath/shower! Weird layout) and all the seats kept breaking just like yours. Our plumber recommended the "Laura" seat by Rokka, and it's wonderful! Had it 5 years and hasn't broken. I need to get one for the upstairs loo now as DH/DC have broken that one. Well worth the money

Cornettoninja · 19/01/2020 11:48

On the plus side the grouting round the base of your toilet is beautifully white Grin

MrsSpenserGregson · 19/01/2020 11:48

Sorry, it's Roca, not Rokka. This one www.amazon.co.uk/Roca-Replacement-Toilet-Standard-A8013U0004/dp/B00B9HWQZK?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

beingchampion · 19/01/2020 11:50

Yes, yes and yes, involving one memorable occasional when we had to rescue someone who had fallen across and behind the loo. Our loos are about 60 years old and I'm assuming the seat fittings aren't up to the job for 'vintage' toilets.

I'm starting to think that people must just fling themselves at the loo at a jaunty angle, as they cope with my fat arse everyday of the year without issue.

corcaithecat · 19/01/2020 11:52

Have the toilet roll on a moveable stand so that you DM doesn’t swivel on the seat to reach the roll. I assume it’s her swivelling on the seat that’s causing it to come loose.

Just google free standing toilet roll holder.

MrsSpenserGregson · 19/01/2020 11:52

Oh sorry I've just read your update OP - my magic Laura seat probably won't work for you then Sad

Tartyflette · 19/01/2020 11:53

Yeah, it's the swivelling round to reach the bog roll that does it for us -- it's on the righthand side of the loo and I am left handed...

DH Has fixed it a few times (DIY whizz) and it's been ok for a while and I'm being more careful!

Menora · 19/01/2020 11:55

Or just go wreck DM’s toilet seats every weekend instead? Angry

Ok I will get a moveable toilet roll holder as well.

amusedbush · 19/01/2020 11:55

There was a thread on here a while ago, I may be misremembering but I think it was a landlord whose tenants were going through two seats a year. It was due to them swivelling round while sitting on the toilet.

Is your toilet roll in an awkward place?

HunnyMummy1993 · 19/01/2020 11:55

It’s on a holder next to the toilet which means you need to reach behind you slightly

There’s your answer.

Can you get a freestanding loo roll holder? We had constant breakages as our loo roll holder was behind. DH is a Heavy chap and would loosen it as he swung round to grab the paper. Since changing the seat has stayed put for a good few years.

Fluffycloudland77 · 19/01/2020 11:55

Take it off completely. It will speed up toilet trips too.

reesewithoutaspoon · 19/01/2020 11:56

Are they soft close lids. I had this issue every time i had vsitors and realised that they were 'forcing ' the lid and or seat down after using the toilet and it was pulling the seat lid off the pegs. your toilet is exactly the same type as mine

HunnyMummy1993 · 19/01/2020 11:57

Xposted with everyone.

Must learn to type faster.

Menora · 19/01/2020 11:59

DM always complains about my house as it is. I never have the coffee she likes (I don’t drink coffee) and she tried to offload a coffee maker on me recently which will just take up space in my kitchen so she can drink it when she visits. The one time I forgot to put a hand towel in the bathroom she complained. She has complained about the toilet roll before. She also doesn’t like my stairs or the passenger seat in my car.

OP posts:
Menora · 19/01/2020 12:00

Yes soft close lids but DC must force them closed or something which is why they come off the pegs

OP posts:
Oldraver · 19/01/2020 12:02

I think like others have said it's just what happens with toilet seats, especially as people will lean to one side to wipe their bum. The fact someone has made a Sta-Tite seat says it all.

I've always thought i would like a toilet without a seat and you cab now buy one

DotBall · 19/01/2020 12:06

It’s the blind hole fixings. One of our toilet seats is a bugger for coming loose as the pegs just work themselves out of the blind hole. We’ve had three different sets of fixings in recent years and they’ve all been crap. 😬
