To ask what speed on a dual carriageway....

Hi all,

I want to ask you, what speed do you do down a dual carriageway that is NSL? I mean you personally.

I know the limit is 70mph.

I do stick to 70, because it was drilled into me by my dad. I am sure I have broke the speed limit at some point in my driving life, if only briefly, think we all have.

But back to it. What speed do you do? Also what speed do you think is acceptable max? My DH does 80 and thinks most do so. Confused

Also I am asking what speed your speedometer says. I know they are out some what but just to keep it simple, for me lol. Grin

However, I refuse to run careful calibration tests with SATNAV & phone & who-knows-what-else-devices to find out what my (so-called) real speed is on the speedometer. If it says 70, I'm believing it's 70.

Generally I prefer to drive at the speedo speed, rather than satnav speed. It's nice to have a little margin of error just in case you're on a very slight downward incline and pick up 1 or 2 mph. Especially as the SC instructors other prediction was a lowering in tolerance for speeding generally - which one of the attendees on our course vouched for (32 in a 30).

Nice....thanks for belittling my horrific experience

Phone lock.. that's an awful post.

Reading back, in the context of the post I quoted, I agree. It was inappropriate.

@Herringbone31 I apologise.

TabbyMumz · 19/01/2020 16:00

I had a little chuckle to myself today after reading this post this morning....I had to drive on a dual carriageway which has a restriction of 50 and average speed cameras all along it. Quite a few people whizzed past me at top speeds so will soon be getting fines in the post. Also quite amusing to see those that did speed past, drive up the bum of the car in front trying to push them all out of the way, but noone was having it as traffic was busy in both lanes, so they were stuck. At one point it goes into 3 lanes and those people who were frustrated at having to drive behind people doing the speed limit, then rev up into the fast lane and hey bingo fall fowl of the last average speed camera.

TabbyMumz · 19/01/2020 16:04

"You'll be stopped by the Police for doing just over 50 on a dual carriageway"
How silly is that.

I think you're being deliberately obtuse, I was replying to someone who said a dual carriageway can have any number of lanes...*

Nah, ultimately I couldn't give a shit and being deliberately obtuse requires overthinking all this shit.

BoomBoomsCousin · 19/01/2020 16:37

I tend to go around 80 providing conditions don’t dictate a slower speed. I used to drive a lot faster but as I got older fear of losing my license slowed me down. I do miss driving at higher speeds though, it can be quite exhilarating.

ivykaty44 · 19/01/2020 16:45

I’m just to blardy mean to waste fuel so drive at around 65
Nothing to do with 😇 and all to do with not liking waste and burning money

I always wonder why someone will sped passed at approximately 80, when they can see they’ll need to slowdown, they’ll then proceed to slam on the brakes and waste £££

Scarlettpixie · 19/01/2020 16:48

Usually 70 or less.

I might do up to 80 if it is daytime, good weather and little traffic.

Winterwoollies · 19/01/2020 16:52

@Mischance you would be wrong, I’m afraid. One of my additional qualifications is Advanced Driving and the other is a race licence. Both rely on you being able to speed confidently.

And unlike many other little lying saints on this thread, I was telling the truth about my speed on dual carriageways and motorways, depending on volume of traffic. I don’t speed, however, in urban and residential areas.

By the way, hands up who here drives a Honda Jazz?

This is also a very sensible consideration.

I was in Cologne (funnily enough) recently and it was one of the first times I'd been on an autobahn without restrictions (somehow, the ones I've been on always do) and my friend's partner was doing about 95mph - she told him to slow down to save petrol!

cologne4711 · 19/01/2020 18:12

You lot must be fucked when you pull off the ferry/chunnel at Calais and encounter continental speed limits

Hasn't happened, I'm far too wimpy to drive on the "wrong" side of the road and use the train instead.

KenDoddsDogsDadsDead · 19/01/2020 18:14

I tend to stick to 80 on the speedo.

ivykaty44 · 19/01/2020 19:14

4711

Never had any issues on Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian or Dutch motorways

happycamper11 · 19/01/2020 20:25

Same 😆 I only drive on Cyprus as they drive on the left .. totally wimped out of the far more convenient option of car hire for our upcoming Netherlands trip and will be faffing around on public transport or paying over the odds for taxis/transfers instead.

karencantobe · 19/01/2020 20:46

Just to add, dual carriageways don't have to have 2 lanes, they can have 1 or more than 2 lanes. But although I have seen examples online of dial carriageways with just 1 lane, I have never driven on one. It is pretty rare which is why I think most people think a dual carriageway has to have at least 2 lanes.

busybarbara · 19/01/2020 20:49

The clue is in the name. Dual. Two. Two lanes.

PPopsicle · 19/01/2020 20:50

At least 80.

lljkk · 19/01/2020 20:53

Tunstead dual carriageway is one I go on quite often. Norfolk. It looks like this. I can just about peak at 45 on it!

To ask what speed on a dual carriageway....
bridgetreilly · 19/01/2020 20:56

The clue is in the name. Dual. Two. Two lanes.

The clue is in the name: Carriageway. It's nothing to do with the number of lanes, it's the number of carriageways. Which have to be separated by a central reservation. One lane on each side of a central reservation is a dual carriageway.

PeakingDuck · 19/01/2020 21:02

Not a fan of speeding (never do it on posted speed limits) , but I’ll wager more accidents are caused by...

Poor observation
Poor car condition
Poor positioning on the road (too close to the car in front, for example)
Poor skill (hard braking leading to skiding, for example)

Than going a few miles an hour over the speed limit on a dual carriageway.

PeakingDuck · 19/01/2020 21:03

@lljkk

I was looking for a photo of that one, but was googling Ashmanhaugh Dual Carriageway!

You and I must be near neighbours!

JohnVirgo · 19/01/2020 21:24

The clue is in the name. Dual. Two. Two lanes.

Well the clue is indeed in the name. Dual. Two. Two carriageways

Bless you trying to be all high and mighty and falling flat on your wee face though Blush

Winterwoollies · 19/01/2020 22:56

@busybarbara oh Barbara, I’ve seen you writing some nonsense on these motoring threads tonight. 😔

Hingeandbracket · 19/01/2020 23:16

Sat navs/GPS are not correct. The speedo on your car is correct. A speed camera will capture you at the speed that shows on your car speedometer. Total rubbish

busybarbara · 20/01/2020 00:17

oh Barbara, I’ve seen you writing some nonsense on these motoring threads tonight.

Yes, like.. you shouldn't go flying round blind bends in case there's a hazard in the road. Nonsense, I know! Grin
